"We've been gone from Babylon 5 for two days now and you haven't said two words. Is something wrong?" "No. I have been thinking about what you said in my cell about the reasons for you bringing me along being more correct than you had first imagined. You asked me to consider the walls I would bring with me." "And what did you bring?" "I'm not sure. I am not sure that my reference points are all they could be. I think I need someplace to start that doesn't include my biases." "I'm not sure I understand." "You have suffered and hated with a hatred that is beyond anything I have ever known on a personal level." "You want to discuss my past?" "Not exactly." "I don't understand?" "G'Kar. You could talk forever and the true feelings of what you have suffered would not be fully expressed." "What are you suggesting?" Lyta explained that she wanted G'Kar to remember all of his experiences and let her scan him as he did. She said she could help him remember things that he would never remember otherwise and that she would feel his feelings and get a real understanding of how his hatreds developed and how he had learned to deal with them. She said her hopes were that she would be able to use what she learned and apply it to her anger." G'Kar agreed and said, "You could scan me at anytime." "I wouldn't do that, G'Kar." "I know." "I will do the scans when you are asleep. It won't be too stressful that way." In spite of himself, G'Kar was humbled by the fact that he was sitting not 4 meters from probably the most powerful non first-one telepath ever to exist in the galaxy and she asked permission to do something, no one could have stopped her from doing. He wondered just what all she could do. Little did he know, he would learn sooner than he wanted. A week later they exited the jumpgate in the Gaim system. They were hailed and identified themselves to the Gaim controllers. Getting permission to visit institutions and access to libraries of information was easier than G'Kar had expected. The Gaim queen was surprised by his requests, but permitted them when he explained his mission. Lyta had been wearing a breathing mask while G'Kar used his gill implants. Lyta had made their quest much easier by directly accessing the Gaim queen's assistant's mind and implanting the language data directly into G'Kar's mind. After that they could read the texts without assistance. They returned to the ship after each day's work. They spent a month on the Gaim homeworld researching and visiting various religious and civic centers and libraries. ***************************************************************** They had just returned to the ship and closed the hatch and Lyta removed her mask before the Gaim atmosphere had been purged. G'Kar's eyes widened when she did this. "Lyta! It isn't safe yet," exclaimed G'Kar. Lyta was smiling at him and it was then that he realized she also had gills. Hers, unlike his, weren't visible when not being used. "What else don't I know about you?" "In good time, G'Kar. In good time." They were in hyperspace and three days away from the Gaim homeworld. G'Kar was beginning to understand why people, like Captain Lockley, were afraid of Lyta. She was a dangerous unknown quantity. However, he didn't feel any apprehension by being so close to her, then again, he wasn't worried about trying to control her and all his dealings with her had been honest and aboveboard. ****************************************************************** "Chief! My PPG doesn't work," exclaimed Zack Allen's third in command. "The trigger's jammed!" [Of all the times to learn you had a defunct weapon, being in a firefight was the worst,] thought Zack Allen to himself as PPG fire passed close overhead. It was a drug bust gone sour and the 'perps' were well armed. There was a leak in station security, a bad one to judge by the weapons arrayed against him and his men. "Pull back and secure the exits from this space," said Zack into his link. As soon as his men were safely out, Zack had the area flooded with gas. The fight was over before anyone was seriously injured. The criminal types that had been gassed would be the worse for wear for a couple of days. The new gas weapons had been brought into use to prevent anymore incidents like the telepath situation that been experienced with Byron and his crowd. At the thought of Byron, Zack felt a small pain because it caused him to think of Lyta. He loved the redhead even if she could hand him his head in a basket. "Randy", he told his third in command, "have that PPG checked out by weapons maintenance." "Yes sir, chief." ***************************************************************** Zack entered Captain Lockley's office. IA President John Sheridan was sitting on the couch to the left of her desk. "What can I do for you chief?" asked Lockley. "Captain, Mr. President, I have something you might find very interesting and maybe a little scary." Zack laid a PPG on the captain's desk. "This is the weapon that President Sheridan held to Lyta's head." Lockley examined the weapon and asked, "What is so special about it, Zack?" "It doesn't work anymore captain," replied Zack. "How doesn't it work, Zack?" asked Sheridan. Captain Lockley expertly field stripped the handgun, then handed the trigger assembly to Sheridan. Sheridan found himself examining a single piece of metal that should have been four separate pieces of metal and plastic. It was if somehow the four had melted together into one. "Zack?" asked Sheridan. "I had the lab boys check it out and they say this can't exist. It has plastic and hardened metals melted together, but there is no evidence of heat having been applied," replied Zack. "Mr. President, if it had been melted the plastic part would have been destroyed," interjected Lockley. "Just what are you saying, Zack?" asked Sheridan. "You couldn't have used it to shoot Lyta," replied Zack. "In other words, she was never in any danger." "No, sir. She wasn't," replied Zack. Zack placed a small box he had been carrying on the captain's desk. "What is this?" asked Lockley. "The handcuffs Lyta was wearing just before she and G'Kar left," answered Zack. Captain Lockley emptied the contents on her desk. There were ten pieces of metal that were broken and worn and had seen better days. "Those were a new set of our strongest security handcuffs when they were put on her," offered Zack. Examining the remnants of the handcuffs, Lockley asked, "I suppose this means she could have walked out of her cell anytime she chose and we couldn't have stopped her?" "Yes ma'am. She destroyed the surveillance camera in her cell just before she and Mr. Garibaldi started to talk about something. We don't know what they discussed. When we examined the camera it's parts were melted together without any indication of heat," answered Zack. "Thank you Zack," said Sheridan. Zack saluted, spun on his heel and departed. "Maybe, Mr. President, I was wrong. You never had the option of shooting her. She let us take her." "Captain, we may never know just what she can do. I, for one, don't really want to know. If she can do what we have seen here, it is a safe bet she could have done major damage to, if not destroyed, the station." "She let us think we were in control. She made us feel safe. What do we do if she comes back this way?" "Be nice to her, captain. Be very nice to her," said Sheridan. ****************************************************************** Lyta was "dreaming" again. She was seeing the young Narn from the viewpoint of a very youthful Narn. She was experiencing another moment in G'Kar's childhood. It was one of many since she had started exploring his memories with him, some weeks ago. Scanning G'Kar in this fashion caused him to relive the experience and allowed Lyta to experience it and study it and its effects on his mind at the same time. She was learning about real anger and hatred and what its long-term effects could be. In some ways she was beginning to understand herself a little better. "G'Kar, are we going to keep visiting the Alliance worlds? I thought we were going to travel to some new sectors of the galaxy?" "We are, Lyta, but it is going to be impossible to visit any place that requires jump engines. We can only go where there are jumpgates and beacons" replied G'Kar. "We'll see about that," was her terse response. Her answer left G'Kar puzzled. "Are you going to install jump engines by any chance?" "No, G'Kar." "Then what?" he inquired. "Wait and see," came her reply. ****************************************************************** "Where are we going next, G'Kar?" "I want to make a stop on the Drazi homeworld. We need some supplies and I can do some research at the same time." "I am persona non grata there, G'Kar. Dr. Franklin and I caused a small uproar not that long ago." "Do they know you personally or only in association with the doctor." "I don't know." Lyta told him about her and Steven's escapades on the Drazi homeworld, leaving out the part about making the Drazi assassin fry his own brains. There wasn't any reason to cause him distress at the moment, not that G'Kar would have disapproved. "We will have to invent a story so you can keep your face covered while we are planetside. I want to research their religious customs and history." "I have an idea G'Kar? What do you think?" G'Kar turned to look at Lyta and froze half way around. He was staring into the face of a young man with a terrible skin condition. His mouth gaped open and he was in mild shock. Before his eyes the face of the young man dissolved into the face of Lyta. "Relax G'Kar. I just wanted to get your opinion." "You have a flair for the dramatic, Lyta. It is very effective. Can you hold it for an extended period of time?" "As long as necessary. Since I am making my appearance the same for all observers, it isn't difficult at all. Presenting differing appearances for different people at the same time is another story. I can fool their scanners, too." "This is how you and Dr. Franklin escaped before?" "Yep." "You said your abilities were increasing. You didn't say just what they are." "In time G'Kar. In time." ****************************************************************** Lyta and G'Kar proceeded via a ground car to the customs and immigration area of the main spaceport on the Drazi homeworld. A customs agent carefully inspected their travel cases. They had passed through the immigration portion of the process without a hitch. Lyta was wearing a robe and hood that hid her form and her face from all but direct observation. After walking outside of the spaceport G'Kar looked at Lyta and said, "That was easier than I expected. Apparently you aren't on the wanted list." Using an available taxi, G'Kar and Lyta soon managed to find a hotel and rent rooms. G'Kar immediately set about arranging for delivery of supplies and gathered information needed to facilitate his research on Drazi theological history. Lyta sat on her balcony and opened her mind slowly. There was a bedlam of thoughts assaulting her, but she was determined to practice isolating and scanning individual minds of people who were in the streets below. Everyone thought telepaths were limited to line of sight and they were for the most part. She, however, wasn't a normal telepath. Several hours later G'Kar knocked at her door and suggested that they find something to eat. Lyta agreed since she was famished. Drazi food was always a challenge. She found it better not to ask too many questions as to what the food was. As long as it didn't try to escape her plate she could handle it. G'Kar was enjoying his supper immensely. The food on his plate was very similar to what he had on Narn. Lyta and G'Kar had been on the Drazi Homeworld for just a little over a week and were on their way back to their hotel from a late supper. They had chosen to return using a narrow back alley as a shortcut. "You know this isn't exactly a safe place to be, G'Kar," Lyta noted. "It will be okay. I didn't see anyone following us," replied the Narn. They were just over half way down the alley when two figures stepped out of the shadow about 10 meters in front of them. Lyta noticed that at least one of the strangers was a Narn. Strange place to find one of G'Kar's people. She felt a bit better about the situation immediately, but the feeling proved to be short lived. She sensed the presence of two more persons behind them and turned to look at them. They were pointing ppgs at her and G'Kar. She did a quick scan of all four of the strangers as G'Kar started to address them. "What can we do for you?" inquired G'Kar. "You can help us enrich ourselves," came the answer from the Narn in front of them. "Do you know who I am?" asked G'Kar. "Most certainly," replied the Narn. "G'Kar. This isn't a robbery," whispered Lyta. "Who's your little friend, G'Kar?" asked the Narn. "You don't want to know," stated G'Kar. "They were hired to kill you," Lyta whispered to G'Kar. They both heard the whine of the ppgs being charged. G'Kar started to turn toward Lyta, but what felt like a hundred tons of rocks fell on him. As he slammed into the ground his head was turned toward Lyta. He heard multiple ppgs firing just before everything went black. Later he would swear that Lyta had been hit by at least six ppg pulses and that her eyes began to glow a very bright white. The screams were heard several blocks away and made the blood of those who heard them run cold. Several police officers on break, sitting in a sidewalk cafe, out on the main street, heard the screams and ran toward the noise. They entered the alley weapons drawn and charged. They found a young woman kneeling beside an unconscious Narn. They also found a Narn and Drazi dead on the street about ten meters in front of the young woman and two Drazi about the same distance behind her. The four dead men were still holding charged ppgs in their hands. The young woman told the police that she and her friend were about to be robbed when her friend simply crumpled to the street beside her. She stated that she knelt down to assist her friend and that she heard the robbers charge their weapons. She related that at that point the screaming began. ****************************************************************** G'Kar came back to consciousness in his hotel room. He noted by the room clock that it was almost daylight. He must have been dreaming or worse, having one hell of a nightmare. He rolled over and went back to sleep. It was well after daylight when G'Kar knocked on Lyta's door. It took a minute before she opened it and admitted him to her room. "Feel like getting some breakfast G'Kar?" asked Lyta. Twenty minutes later they were sitting in a small cafe across the street from their hotel enjoying a hearty breakfast. Both of them noticed two plainclothes detectives approach their table. [Funny how police all over the galaxy seemed to have many of the same traits. Must be a requirement of the job], thought Lyta. The detectives introduced themselves and asked if Lyta and G'Kar could tell them about last night. Lyta and G'Kar complied. G'Kar asked if the men had been caught. He seemed surprised to learn that they were dead. Of course, he had been unconscious when they were killed. "Could we see the bodies?" inquired G'Kar. The detectives said they didn't have a problem. They theorized that some enemy that G'Kar had made along the way might want him dead, since it was plain, from Lyta's testimony, that they intended to kill him, and her since she was there. They alluded that someone must be watching over G'Kar and Lyta. Lyta chuckled at the idea. At the coroner's office, G'Kar and Lyta viewed the bodies. There were no external injuries to them, but the internal organs looked like so much bloody mush. It was as if someone had liquefied them in a blender. G'Kar had a slightly squeamish look on his face. "That would account for the screams," commented Lyta. G'Kar took note of Lyta's lack of response to what they were observing. The detectives noticed it, too. "I don't suppose either of you can enlighten us about this?" asked the older of the two detectives. Both G'Kar and Lyta nodded no. G'Kar and Lyta were dismissed to go about their business. Back at their hotel Lyta told G'Kar that she pulled the identity of the person who hired the assassination group from the mind of the Narn before he died. "Are you sure Lyta? He might have been trying to mislead you," said G'Kar. "G'Kar! This is me, 'brains fried to order Alexander', remember? He was in so much pain he didn't care about anything else, and he didn't know there was a telepath present. Besides, he and his friends pissed me off", responded Lyta. "I saw the results of that mistake this morning. I thought I saw you get hit by ppg fire last night. Am I wrong?" "G'Kar, do I look like I've been shot? You must have been hit on the head harder than I thought." "No," replied G'Kar. "I am about finished with my research and the last of our provisions will be delivered tomorrow. We can leave tomorrow evening." ***************************************************************** "We are two minutes from the jumpgate Lyta. Say goodbye to the Drazi homeworld." "I am just happy I didn't have to answer for what Dr. Franklin and I did the last time I was here." "I have seen what you can do Lyta. It is scary. You are scary." "Why G'Kar? I have never harmed anyone who wasn't trying to harm me. Are you beginning to have second thoughts about having me for a traveling companion?" "No. You make a very good bodyguard." "Those detectives suspected me as the killer. They would have arrested me if they could have figured out how I could have done it. They have never encountered a high powered teek before. Stephen would have known at first sight." "Only because he knows what you are." "What am I, G'Kar? What did Garibaldi tell you?" "Nothing. I know you are an extremely powerful telepath and telekinetic and you were intended as a weapon of sorts, but your power is almost unbelievable. I don't know anything other than that." "Michael doesn't really understand what I am becoming. It scares the hell out of me. If I am right, I will be powerful beyond comprehension. No one should have that much power." "You were actually shot the other night." "Yes. I was hit six times. It stung like hell, like bad bee stings. It really pissed me off." "Jumpgate is here." They entered hyperspace and began the next leg of their journey. They never noticed the ship following them at a distance or the whitestar that broke orbit to follow it. They had been hyperspace for a week when Lyta asked G'Kar what their next port of call would be. He didn't answer immediately. "Lyta, are you gaining weight?" "If I am, it's a testament to your culinary skills." "I can't cook worth a damn, Lyta." "I know." "Your clothing looks to be a bit tighter than when we began this adventure." "What are you trying to say, G'Kar?" "You and Byron were lovers." "So what. We were both adults." "Lyta, are you pregnant?" "You are a nosy Narn." "You didn't answer my question?" "I don't know if it's possible, but I have no way of knowing for sure. It doesn't make any difference, though. It won't interfere with our traveling." "Have you ever been pregnant before?" "No. Why?" "Then you don't know what you might encounter in the area of difficulties?" "No. Not exactly. I don't think it will interfere with me or us. I think I can handle it." "I am going to make a slight change in our itinerary." "We have an itinerary?" "Yes. I am going to go to Minbar." "Are you nuts, G'Kar! Sheridan is there, and he isn't exactly my best friend." "He won't even know we are there. I just want to get you checked out by a doctor." "Hell. In that case, why don't you just swing by earth. I am as about as welcome there as I will be on Minbar." "Okay, but at one of our stops, you should see a doctor and have your condition checked." "Whatever makes you happy G'Kar." As it was to come to pass, Lyta never saw a doctor. *************************************************************** END GLYTA-A I have written two endings so far, they will be parts H-1,2...etc. Aubrey From: "Aubrey W. "No. Due to my duties as a member of the Kha'ri, I have never visited many other worlds, only those we were selling to or buying weapons from." "It explains why we are hitting so many IA members. Sooner or later, I'm going to be a real hindrance. Most of them don't know who I am, but I'm sure there are some who do, who won't want me around. Working for the Vorlons hasn't helped my popularity." "We aren't going to be meeting any government types, so it shouldn't be a problem." They landed without incident and passed through immigration/customs quickly. The Brakiri weren't as wrapped up in themselves as some other IA members. Lodging was easy to find. The Brakiri took their comforts seriously. The rooms were clean and much larger than those on the Drazi homeworld. The mean temperature was in the human comfort range, for which Lyta was grateful. Her pregnancy was marching on. She was going to buy some new clothes to cover her expanding horizons. ************************************************************************ Lyta was looking over the various dress and pants outfits on the hangers. There were some beautiful outfits, but there didn't seem to be anything she could use. Lyta felt a touch on her shoulder and turned. She found herself facing a young Brakiri female. Lyta looked into her mind and found what she needed. "Do you have clothing that will expand?" Hearing her native language spoken by a human was a shock for the salesgirl. One didn't often see a human on her world, much less in a garment shop. "I don't understand?" responded the salesgirl. Lyta explained about how the female human body changed during pregnancy. The salesgirl smiled and motioned for Lyta to follow her. She led her to a section of the shop where a seamstress was available. After explaining to the seamstress what she needed, the man smiled. "I can make alterations for a minor charge," he said, and quoted a price to Lyta. She thought it was reasonable and accepted it. He told her the clothing would be ready the day after tomorrow. The salesgirl engaged Lyta in conversation. The idea of being able to converse with a human was too much for the girl to miss. Lyta was honored the girl found her so interesting. "My name is Yela," said the girl. "You can call me, Lyta," responded Lyta. "Can you suggest things for a stranger to see or visit. I am not a tourist, but I may have some free time during the next week and it can't hurt to learn about this world." "If you get free time, I would be happy to be your guide," replied Yela> "I will let you know one way or the other, Yela. Thank you for the offer." Lyta left and went to meet G'Kar. He didn't show and she started to worry. Returning to her hotel, Lyta found a message waiting for her. G'Kar had been injured in a fight and sustained some serious injuries. ************************************************************************ "What happened G'Kar? You look like hell, warmed over," commented Lyta. "There was another attempt on my life, and you weren't available for bodyguard duty, so I had to improvise," he replied, grimacing from the pain generated by several broken ribs. "He had help, but they escaped." "Where is the assailant?" asked Lyta. "He's in intensive care and being guarded by the local police. They won't let you near him," insisted G'Kar. "I don't need to get too near him. Once I separate out his thoughts, it will be all I need," answered Lyta. She walked out of G'Kar's room and to the nurses station, where she inquired about the assassin's location. The nurse wouldn't give her the information, but as she thought of it, Lyta scanning her, lifted it without her knowing it had been done. Walking up the officers guarding the assassin's room, Lyta asked them if she could see him. She was refused entrance, as she had expected. She filtered the officer's mental noise and concentrated on the feelings of extreme pain that were coming from the room behind the officers. She isolated the assassin's thoughts and mind patterns. Having what she wanted, Lyta turned and walked back the way she came. Reentering G'Kar's room, she sat down on a chair on one side of the bed. "G'Kar, you really should think of something besides your pain. I can feel it all the way down the hall." "Did they let you see him?" "Of course not, but I managed to isolate his thought patterns," she replied. "Did the doctor say when you might be fit to leave the hospital?" "No. Hopefully by tomorrow. I need you to take care of some business for me." "Give me the particulars," replied Lyta. G'Kar gave her the information and a datapad that had accounting data for the transactions. "Why does so much of your business take place in bars, G'Kar?" "It was his choice not mine," replied the Narn. "I do hope this isn't what you meant by adventure," replied Lyta as she left the room. She would have to go dressed as she was. For visiting spaceport dives, she felt armor might be more appropriate. ******************************************************************** The inside of the bar wasn't as dimly lit as she had expected. Standing just inside the door, she carefully looked the bar and patrons over as she waited for her eyes to adjust. There was a section of the customer area apparently intended for dining. This seemed odd for a spaceport bar. Lyta walked over to the bar and asked about the dining tables. The bartender pointed her in the direction of an older Brakiri who functioned as the headwaiter. The old man showed her to a table in a back corner, that strangely enough, had a light installed in the ceiling directly over it. Lyta realized it would allow her to be observed while obscuring her observer. She was looking over the menu when a gentleman stepped up to the table and asked to join her. Lyta recognized him from G'Kar's mental image and nodded assent. "G'Kar couldn't make it. He sent me instead," stated Lyta. "Why didn't he come?" "He is in the hospital. If you want to wait, he expects to be released tomorrow," Lyta offered. This wasn't going to be fair at all The fellow had no idea he was dealing with a first class telepath. Lyta could sense his level of distress without even scanning him. "No. if you are familiar with what he want's we can deal," replied the man. "This is a routine business transaction, perfectly legal. Why meet in this place?" she asked. "Don't let the looks fool you. This place has the best food in town, if you know how to order. This is my lunch time and this gave me an excuse to eat away from the office." He was telling the truth. "What do you recommend, then?" "For a human female, almost anything except the number four. It has some ingredients that cause odd behavior. Try the number six. It is a salad, a sandwich and soup. It is inexpensive and I think you will like it.. I like the three myself." They motioned for the waiter and ordered. While they waited for their food, they began to deal. The items G'Kar wanted were routine supplies except for a number of items especially for Lyta. These items were expensive in a place like this only because their was really no call for them. Anywhere on earth they would have cost less than one tenth of what they commanded here. Transportation costs were enormous. Using her advantage, Lyta held the price to the least the man would sell for. Since she could read his mind, she knew what his absolute bottom line was. Their business was finished just as the food arrived. He had been telling the truth about the food. It was absolutely delicious. Lyta made a note that in the future to not pass judgement on a bar/restaurant too quickly. ************************************************************************ "You missed a good deal, G'Kar," said Lyta. Looking over the results of Lyta's dealing, G'Kar noted that she had driven a very hard bargain. "You must be a tough negotiator Lyta." "I am a telepath. It wasn't a fair fight. That wasn't the best part," she noted. "The food was unbelievable. I kept feeling sorry for you, knowing hospital food. We will have to eat there before we leave." "What about the fellow who tried to do me in? I was told he had diplomatic immunity. He is going to get away with it." "I don't think so, G'Kar. I am going back to the hotel and have supper where I can be seen by at least a dozen people. I suggest you have a doctor or nurse in this room at about twenty hundred hours tonight. Just think about it really hard when they are in here. I will do the rest." "I already feel sorry for him," said G'Kar. "Don't!" replied Lyta. ************************************************************************ The hotel had a very nice dining room and it wasn't lacking guests. Lyta had a table almost in the middle of the room. Being the only human in the room guaranteed that people would notice her and her flaming red hair would be remembered. The waiter took her order after delivering her drink and appetizer. Since she was pregnant, she limited herself to drinking water and juices. Casually looking around the room, she began to reach out with her mind until she found G'Kar. Her watch was indicating twenty hundred hours. She heard G'Kar call for a nurse and knew when the nurse arrived. She was beginning to change G'Kar's bandages when Lyta found the mind of the assassin. In the guarded room the medical monitors were all sounding alarms as the man's systems and organs began to fail. By the time the nurses and doctor arrived his bodily functions had ceased. The autopsy would reveal that his internal organs were almost liquefied and the blood vessels in his brain were all ruptured. The police went to G'Kar's room only to find him tangled up in bandages as the nurse was changing them. Obviously he didn't wasn't personally responsible for the fellow's death. The lead officer offered that this was going to be a nightmare since the fellow had a diplomatic passport. Back in the hotel dining room, Lyta was thoroughly enjoying her supper. She was feeling good about herself. Justice had been served. *********************************************************************** "Are they going to release you, G'Kar?" "Yes. I am just waiting for the doctor. They are charging the bill to the Drazi embassy, since it was one of their's that did all the damage." The doctor came into the room and smiled at G'Kar. "You can go. Just take it easy on the ribs. There wasn't any other internal damage. It is just going to hurt when you breathe deeply for about a week or so." G'Kar thanked him and followed Lyta down the hall. As they left the hospital, they encountered a police officer, who informed G'Kar that he had been dismissed as a suspect in the case. "What case, officer?" asked Lyta. "The guy who tried to kill your friend was murdered in his guarded room last night, ma'am," replied the officer. "No loss though. If he had lived, we would have to let him go. He was a diplomat or so the Drazi embassy claims. It gives me a headache, but, at the same time, saves us some frustration." Lyta nodded and she and G'Kar continued on their way. "You are the most cold blooded mammal I have ever met, Lyta Alexander." "Why, thank you G'Kar. I love you too," she replied. "Coming from you, that's a real compliment." "I have some appointments tomorrow, with some very influential religious leaders. It seems they are interested in the "Book of G'Kar"." "Exchange of ideas and beliefs can be very good for long term relations, if given in a open forum," remarked Lyta. "How long do you expect to be occupied? I will do some sightseeing, if you don't need me." "I won't know until after our first meeting tomorrow. I will let you know at supper," he answered. "Now let's have lunch in that bar I sent you to yesterday." ******************************************************************** "Monsignor Mohja, I am honored with this audience. How may I be of service?" asked G'Kar. "I have been reading a copy of "The Book of G'Kar". It is not often one gets to meet a religious leader such as yourself. Your writings are obviously based upon real life experience and the wisdom that can be gleaned from it. I wish to discuss your revelations and why you arrived at them." For G'Kar this was all he could wish for. To learn another cultures beliefs and practices, while getting to explain your own in a forum that can make changes to the way a society thinks and feels. It is a religious leaders dream. ******************************************************************************** At supper, G'Kar told Lyta that he would be bust for at least a week, so she might as well play tourist. "G'Kar, I am looking forward to the relaxation. I visited the police station today and found out where the local thugs, who attacked you can be found," said Lyta. "They were just hired muscle, Lyta. They aren't worth bothering with," answered G'Kar. "It won't be a bother, G'Kar. I don't intend to kill them, even though that is what they were going to do to you. I only intend to get them interested in another line of work," responded Lyta. "Just don't get yourself in trouble with the local police." "I don't intend to." ******************************************************************************* Next morning Lyta went to the dress shop and let Yela know she had a week to go looking at the sights. Yela told her father, the seamstress, who owned the shop. He was pleased. Lyta said she would make it worth Yela's time. They agreed to meet the next morning in the hotel dining room for coffee before starting. ****************************************************************************** Lyta left the dress shop and went to the police station. There she met with the officer she had talked with as G'Kar had left the hospital. He agreed to accompany her to the local dives looking for the other persons responsible for the assault on G'Kar. "Officer, what should I call you?" asked Lyta. "Detective Stoyph will do just fine Ms. Alexander," replied the officer. "Please call me Lyta, I hate the Ms. Alexander thing. It makes me sound like someone's grandmother," replied Lyta. The first stop was a seedy bar in an even seedier part of the city. As they were about to enter the bar the detective told Lyta to let him do the talking. He said that her being human would put the patrons on guard, but her being female would result in her being ignored. It took a minute for their eyes to start adjusting to the low light level of the bar. When their eyes had adjusted, they could see half dozen patrons drinking at the bar and several tables. Lyta following the detective walked over to the bar. The detective asked several questions and got only snide responses. Lyta scanning the bartender got much more. She learned enough to start scanning the patrons. Several in a back booth had some very interesting thoughts. She whispered into the detective's ear. Nodding the detective walked to the table in the rear of the bar. One had several men sitting at it. Some were obviously hired help and on was well dressed. "Ah detective Stoyph, slumming again, I see. What can I do for you and who's your friend?" asked the well dressed man. Indicating Lyta, Stoyph replied, "Ms. Alexander, is an observer. We are trying to locate some local muscle that assaulted her traveling companion. They were sloppy and didn't finish the job, so I assume they aren't yours." "You must mean the Narn. I heard they caught the guy responsible." "We got the brains, but the brawn escaped. Somebody wasted the brains. Do you know anything else about it." "Only what I just told you. I heard the guy was alone in a guarded room? I'd like to hire whoever did it. That kind of talent is hard to find." Detective Stoyph looked at Lyta. She just shrugged. They left the bar and as they reached the street, Stoyph said, "You never mentioned that you are a telepath." "You never asked," replied Lyta. "You wouldn't consider hiring yourself out to my precinct for the rest of the time you are here. We could clear up about seventy percent of our outstanding case load." "I never cared for police work," replied Lyta, thinking of her internship with the psi cops. *************************************************************************** Inside the bar, the gang leader was giving orders. "Find out all you can about this Ms. Alexander. She was supposed to be hit with the Narn, but she wasn't there. Find out all you can about the Narn and who wanted him whacked and find out who botched the job. If it was ours, I want them to go away," said the boss. "Be careful. I think she may be a telepath. If that is the case, I want her dead. There is no telling what she learned just now." ******************************************************************************** The next place they stopped they struck paydirt. The detective arrested two of the hoods they were looking for. The last one was picked up at his apartment. Lyta thanked Detective Stoyph for his efforts and departed. She had the thought patterns of the three memorized and could pick them up from the background noise. It would be all she would need. It was just past noon and Lyta stopped at the first sidewalk she saw. She ordered a light lunch and sat watching the people go about their business. She didn't get to do things like this very often, so she made the best of it. Later she went back to the dress shop and collected her purchases from two days before. **************************************************************************** At supper G'Kar related his days activities to Lyta. He was ecstatic. Lyta gave him the review of her activities. "You may have put yourself or at least those around you in danger, Lyta," commented G'Kar. "If this crime boss type thinks you learned anything about his operations, he will try to kill you." "Your concern is noted, G'Kar, but all I am going to do for the next week is be a tourist. Yela, a girl I met when I bought the maternity clothing, is going to be my tour guide. I plan to thoroughly enjoy myself. I'll take pictures for you." ****************************************************************************** "Good morning, Yela," greeted Lyta. "Would you care for coffee or tea and some breakfast before we start." "Tea would be fine, I have already eaten breakfast," replied Yela. Lyta and Yela spent the day visiting museums and art galleries and some sights just for the looking, such as the observation decks of several tall buildings. One of which was also a restaurant. Yela explained that she had scheduled a rental flight for the next day, so they could visit some sites located outside the city in the surrounding country. She promised Lyta that it would be beautiful and exciting. That evening Lyta had plenty to talk about over supper with G'Kar. **************************************************************************** The small aircraft that Yela had rented, complete with pilot, gave Lyta the feeling that she was free as a bird. The wind in her hair was exhilarating and the view of the very wide and deep canyon was breathtaking. Yela said they could take a trip below the rim if Lyta had time. The flight had gone below the rim and the beauty of the color bands in the cliffs rivaled those of Lyta's home world earth's Grand Canyon. She would make time for the trip into the canyon. The trip back was a tour over some of the most majestic forests Lyta had ever seen, even in pictures. In a sweep over a stand of spectacularly tall evergreens the aircraft's engine sputtered. The engine sputtered for about two minutes before it quit and the plane started to lose altitude. With nothing but heavy forest reaching to the horizon beneath them, there would be no emergency landing. They were going to crash. "Did you send an emergency signal," Lyta asked the pilot over the wind noise. He nodded yes as he worked the controls hard trying to control their descent. Looking over the pilot's shoulder, Lyta could see that the fuel tank registered half full, yet they had run out of fuel. Lyta waited until just before impact, then rendered the pilot and Yela unconscious. The plane crashed into the tree tops, but the pilot and passengers sustained only minor injuries. It took rescuers less than an hour to locate them and two hours to get them out using hovering aircraft. The pilot, Lyta and Yela were transported to a hospital for medical checkup for injuries. The authorities were amazed that they had even survived. It was credited to a fluke of luck because of the way the aircraft had impacted the trees. It was early evening before Lyta finally got back to her hotel. She had supper and told G'Kar one hell of a tale. He reminded her of his earlier warning. She agreed that it was too much to be a coincidence. After Supper she told G'Kar there was something she needed to do. He insisted in coming with her. ***************************************************************************** Lyta and G'Kar were standing in front of a table with a half dozen men seated at it. One of the men looked up at her and almost had a heart attack. Looking at the well dressed gentleman, Lyta asked, "Remember me?" "You would be hard to forget," he answered. "I don't know why you felt you had to have me killed, but you missed. You won't get another chance," she said flatly. The criminal boss motioned for his men to grab them, but they never moved. "They aren't going anywhere. You had a good thing going. You weren't connected with the men who attacked G'Kar. I had no interest in you and the detective had other things on his mind, but you couldn't leave well enough alone. Why?" "You are a telepath. I couldn't take a chance on what you might have learned. It's nothing personal, it was business." "Well, I take it very personal and I am going to do something about it," said Lyta, concentrating on the gang leader and then each of his men. "By the way, did you hear about the fellows in the jail today?" "Yeah, what about it." Lyta gave him her best smug smile, took G'Kar by the arm and started to leave. On their way to the door several men blocked their exit. They dropped to the floor silently writhing in agony. Lyta and G'Kar left. ******************************************************************************** "Lyta, what did you do to those men.?" asked G'Kar. "I over stimulated the pain centers of their brains. They suffered no real harm," she answered. "However, the same cannot be said for that boss and his thugs. That was a different matter." "Will they be able to trace it to you?" "Nope. What happens will happen early in the morning, while you and I are lightyears away from here. Do you know what a logic bomb is?" She asked. "Yes. A computer program that does its damage long after it is installed. What does that have to do with this?" "About a month after we leave, the thugs will develope crippling health problems and their boss will slowly go stark raving mad within a few weeks after that. He will eventually be a mindless idiot, unable to even go to the toilet," she replied. G'Kar visibly shuddered. ****************************************************************************** The rest of her time went quickly and too soon Lyta was saying goodbye to her new friend. She took her name and how to contact her before she departed. G'Kar was satisfied that he would never have an opportunity like this one again. ****************************************************************************** End part GL-B1 From: "Aubrey W. "We are being followed G'Kar." "Are you sure?" A very pregnant Lyta nodded. "What do we have for weapons?" "Only light cannons. Nothing to brag about. We could defend ourselves against a small raider." "Close your eyes G'Kar." "Why?" "I don't want you to get sick." G'Kar closed his eyes and waited. Almost instantly, Lyta told him to open them. What he saw took his breath away. They were in normal space. He checked his instruments and could not detect anything within a month's travel time of them. There was nothing there, no planets, no jumpgates, nothing. With fear in his voice, G'Kar looked at Lyta and asked, "Where are we?" "I don't know exactly, except that there isn't a world within light years of us," answered Lyta. On board the ship following them, the captain was stunned as his weapons tracking operator told him that G'Kar's ship had vanished off his screen. "What do you mean, "They've vanished"?" "Sir, they were there, then they weren't. The system is operating normally." On board the trailing whitestar, the reaction was similar to that on the ship they were following. The difference was that the whitestar captain had his navigator plot the last position of G'Kar's ship with the intent of exiting back to normal space at that point. It would be risky, but he had his orders. As it approached the last position of G'Kar's ship the whitestar opened a jump point and exited hyperspace. It almost ran over G'Kar's ship as it exited hyperspace. G'Kar was shaken by the near miss and hailed the whitestar. His hail was answered almost immediately. "Captain. Where did you get your pilot's license?" inquired G'Kar. "My apologies Ambassador G'Kar. We were off a bit in our calculations," answered the minbari captain. Lyta had retreated to the bathroom in pain. Her baby was coming ready or not. Her water had broken earlier, but she hadn't told G'Kar. He couldn't help anyway. The pains came faster and harder. Lyta screamed. In the pilot's area the microphones picked up her scream and G'Kar looked confused. "What is going on over there G'Kar?" asked the whitestar captain with concern in his voice. "It's nothing, captain. My companion is not feeling well just now," answered G'Kar. Lyta screamed again. The pain was worse than anything she had experienced since her torture on Mars, before she had gone to the Vorlon homeworld. Another scream followed almost immediately. Lyta had set up a pan and towels to catch the baby as it exited her body. "G'Kar. What in Valen's name is going on over there?" insisted the captain. "Honestly captain. It is just a minor medical problem with my companion," answered G'Kar. There was one more scream and then it stopped. In the bathroom Lyta had picked up her new daughter, cut and tied her umbilical cord and placed her in the sink, then she delivered the afterbirth. It was messy. She disposed of it and began to clean up her new baby. It was a duplicate of her with flaming red hair and a touch of Byron in her eyes. Lyta reentered the main cabin and called to G'Kar, "It's a girl." Onboard the whitestar, the whole bridge crew heard Lyta's statement to G'Kar. "It is alright captain. The problem is over," said G'Kar. "Who is your companion ambassador?" inquired the captain. Lyta walked within range of the communications camera. "Is there a problem, captain?" asked Lyta. "There are just the two of you?" asked the minbari. "Yes captain, there was. Now we are three," answered Lyta. "Could I invite you to dinner aboard my ship?" queried the minbari. G'Kar and Lyta accepted. G'Kar's ship was much too large to fit in the whitestar's hanger bay, so they transferred using a small three person shuttle. "Ambassador G'Kar, Ms. Alexander, I am Sheraun, captain of the Whitestar 71," said the captain formally introducing himself. G'Kar explained that he was no longer an ambassador, but the captain brushed it off, explaining that G'Kar rated the respect regardless. Then he looked at Lyta. "You also have a reputation amongst the anla'shok." Lyta looked a bit taken aback. "I don't understand. I've done nothing to merit a reputation. I am wanted on earth, unwelcome on Babylon 5 and several other worlds, but there is nothing of note about it," answered Lyta. "I am afraid Ambassador Delenn sees it differently. She speaks of you with respect and regret. Respect for what you have done, unselfishly, and regret about how you have been treated. May I?" asked the captain reaching for Lyta's daughter. Lyta handed her child to him. He held her close and looked at Lyta. "You delivered, alone, without help?" "Alone, and without help, seems to be the story of my life," answered Lyta. The minbari captain was tall and looked like a bodybuilder. It seemed that many of the warrior caste were like this. "I can identify with that," he told Lyta with a resigned sigh. G'Kar looked at the captain with an odd expression. Had he heard what he thought he heard? He watched the captain and was rewarded by seeing a wistful look in his eyes as he looked at Lyta. [I'll be damned], thought the Narn. "We have company captain," said Lyta. "They will be coming out of hyperspace about a hundred thousand kilometers in front of us in about two minutes."" Raising his hand to his mouth, the captain relayed what Lyta said to the bridge crew over his link. "How do you know that?" he asked. "Remember captain, I am a telepath," replied Lyta. "I have a P-12 telepath on board, but he can't do that," replied the captain. Lyta smiled at that, and said, "I am not surprised." On the bridge the first officer was observing the ship that had just exited hyperspace. It was almost exactly a hundred thousand kilometers in front of the whitestar. It was hailing the whitestar. "Unknown vessel this is the Daneth, we are chasing the ship that you have tractored alongside. The pilot and passenger are wanted on the Drazi homeworld for murder," said the Drazi captain into his communications system." "You are a little far from home aren't you," replied the whitestar captain. "That is no business of yours came the reply. We demand you turn over the two we seek. You can keep their ship." "You are absolutely sure you want these people," replied the captain. "You seem to have the idea," came the response. Lyta walked into range of the communications system. The captain realized the small sound he had been hearing was her baby feeding at her breast. "You want me for murder. Is that correct?" asked Lyta. "You and the Narn," came the reply. Lyta tilted her head a bit and the Drazi on the screen began having difficulty breathing. "Are you really sure you want me and G'Kar?" Lyta asked. Someone or something unseen was strangling the Drazi. "I am waiting for your answer," said Lyta. The Drazi fell out of the range of his communications imaging device. Lyta turned to face Sheraun, "Maybe he changed his mind." Her child was still busy feeding at her breast. The captain smiled inwardly. She had just killed the Drazi and it only took a thought. She had done it with no more concern than he would have at crushing an irritating insect. The power she radiated was real, unbelievably real. "Captain. I think I need to make an example of that ship and the people they represent," said Lyta. "What do you have in mind?" he asked. "I think it might be best if I go back to our ship and you take the whitestar and G'Kar and jump into hyperspace until I call you back," said Lyta. Sheraun looked at G'Kar, who just shrugged his shoulders. He escorted Lyta back to the hanger bay. "I have some reservations about this Ms. Alexander," said Sheraun. "Don't worry captain, and call me Lyta," she responded. "Only if you call me Sheraun," he replied. Lyta smiled at him and started to board the shuttle. "Captain. Ms. Alexander is aboard their ship and the shuttle is redocking," said the navigator. "Take us away from here," ordered Sheraun. "Jump to hyperspace when we are clear of the her ship." The whitestar spun on its axis and accelerated away from G'Kar's ship at high speed. A minute later it had opened a jump point and disappeared into hyperspace. Aboard the whitestar, Sheraun looked at G'Kar and asked, "Why did she leave you here?" "I don't think she wants anyone to know what she is," he answered. "She doesn't want us to see what she becomes. Captain. She is beyond our understanding. She has power that no one outside of Lorien has ever had," he replied, referring to the first one who had saved Sheridan at Zha ha' dum. Sheraun had heard stories about the one called Lorien. He wasn't sure he believed them, but Delenn did and that was enough for him to give the tales credence. "You like her captain?" asked G'Kar. Sheraun smiled at him and replied, "Yes, I suppose I do. I never gave human females a thought before, but she is different. Actually, I haven't given minbari females much thought either." Sheraun couldn't ignore the fire that Lyta seemed to have lighted in him. He couldn't explain it either. "Contact Ambassador Delenn on Minbar," ordered Sheraun. Moments later the face of Delenn appeared on his communications display. Entil'za I have some news and need direction. He explained about G'Kar and Lyta and informed her of Lyta's present condition. "Bring them to Minbar," she ordered. As usual she was short and to the point. "You are playing with fire captain. Lyta will not want to go to Minbar. President Sheridan is there and there are very hard feelings between them," said G'Kar. "Be that as it may, I have my orders," he replied. "I am just wondering, how you propose to take her there if she doesn't want to go. You should realize, she can destroy this ship with a thought." "She wouldn't do that. We have not harmed her and we wouldn't. If she doesn't want to go, I won't try to force her." On Minbar Sheridan walked into her office just as Delenn closed her communication with Captain Sheraun. Turning to look at her husband, she said, "Whitestar 71 reports that they have G'Kar aboard and that Lyta is aboard G'Kar's ship. John, she just gave birth to a daughter." John Sheridan was remembering Lyta's performance in the Zocalo onboard Babylon 5 and her taunt. Sheridan reopened the channel to the whitestar. "Captain. You said that you have G'Kar aboard your ship, does that mean that Lyta is alone with her daughter aboard G'Kar's ship?" "Yes sir, it does. Why?" asked Captain Sheraun. "Listen closely captain. Lyta Alexander represents an unacceptable danger to the Interstellar Alliance. You are ordered to destroy that ship and her and her daughter with it." Captain Sheraun was stunned and didn't reply for more than a minute. "Sir would you repeat that last order?" requested Sheraun. Sheridan repeated the order. On Minbar Delenn was mortified at what she had just heard. On the whitestar, G'Kar stepped into range of the bridge imager and addressed Sheridan. "John. That is not a good idea. You don't understand the situation anymore?" "What do you mean, G'Kar?" Sheridan asked. "If Captain Sheraun tries to attack Lyta and her child, she will destroy this ship and all of us with it." "What makes you think she is powerful enough to do this, G'Kar?" He asked. "She can move my ship into and out of hyperspace without jump gates or jump engines. I have watched her reduce a kilometer wide asteroid to dust with her telekinetic abilities. I don't think attacking her is a very good idea." Delenn appeared again and said, "Captain, I gave you an order and I expect it to be followed. If you harm her or her child, I will have your head. Do you understand?" Sheraun replied, "Yes Entil'za." On Minbar, Delenn chewed on her husband like a starving dog chews on tough leather. G'Kar looked at Captain Sheraun and said, "An attack on Lyta would be a death sentence." "Would she really kill us with you aboard?" he asked. "She is a mother protecting her offspring. What do you think?" responded G'Kar. Just then they picked up the distress beacon from the Drazi ship. A few minutes later Lyta called for them to return. ****************************************************************** Onboard the Drazi ship the sensor operator reported two lifeforms on G'Kar's ship. The bounty hunters' ship moved to close with Lyta. It was about fifty kilometers away when its problems began. On her ship, Lyta had put her daughter down for her nap and returned to the pilot's area. She put new data crystals into the ship's recorders and began to concentrate. It didn't take long to separate the Drazi engineer's thoughts and get complete information on his ship's engines, weapons and hull structure. Anyone observing Lyta's concentration would have noticed that she began to exude a white aura which got brighter and brighter until she couldn't be seen because of its intensity. Aboard the Drazi ship all hell was breaking loose, literally. Its engines had shut down and couldn't be restarted. The weapons systems no longer had power and the ship was starting to drift and fall apart. Bulkheads were separating and on some decks there were hull breaches. Personnel were scrambling to get to lifepods, but they were all inoperable with hatches that were jammed shut. Desperation drove them to try to get into environment suits, but the fighting over them was preventing it. Meanwhile, large pieces of the ship were separating from the main hull framing members as the ship continued to break up. Within twenty minutes the bounty hunters were just so many bodies floating among the remains of their ship. Lyta quit glowing like a small sun and signaled the whitestar to return. A minute later the whitestar jumped into normal space about twenty kilometers from Lyta. ****************************************************************** On her viewscreen Lyta was watching and listening to Captain Sheraun invite her to come back over for the promised dinner. With no expression showing on her face, on his imager, Lyta was telling Captain Sheraun, "Sheridan ordered you to kill me and my child. Your feelings about it were so strong, I could read them even while you were in hyperspace. You might want to scan the wreckage of the Drazi ship. You will find it interesting." The whitestar maneuvered to get close to the wreckage before starting their scans. It only took a few minutes for the results to be tabulated by the ship's computers and recorded on data crystals. The results painted a picture of horror. The ship had simply fallen apart. There was no evidence of any weapons fire of any kind and there were no survivors. The bodies weren't mangled or otherwise damaged. They just floated in space among the other debris. The whitestar came around to leave the debris field and close on G'Kar's ship when her main engines shut down. Her thrusters didn't operate either and her life support was being powered by emergency batteries. She was drifting helplessly in space. "I think, captain, that Lyta is making a point," observed G'Kar. "She is showing us how easily she could destroy us." Captain Sheraun looked at G'Kar and said emphatically, "I am impressed, ambassador." Without warning Whitestar 71's main engines, jump engines and auxiliary power all came back on line. "We are being hailed captain", said the communications watch. Sheraun nodded and Lyta appeared on the imager. "I get the point Lyta," said Sheraun. "I thought you might," she responded. "Is G'Kar ready to leave?" "Lyta we have been invited to Minbar," said G'Kar. "You know I am not welcome there, and you know Sheridan wants me dead. You saw and heard the orders he gave to Captain Sheraun," came a tart reply. "Delenn wants you to come. Besides, no one there can do you any harm, anyway," G'Kar countered. "Okay, G'Kar," she said in her tired laid back way, looking like she was placating a small child. They tractored G'Kar's ship up close to the whitestar in preparation to jumping into hyperspace. Lyta was standing next to the left side of the captain's chair. "Let me, captain?" She asked. Sheraun started to ask her what and the scene outside the bridge viewports changed from normal space to one of the red background of hyperspace. The captain's jaw dropped. The rest of the bridge crew was stunned. "You see captain. There is more to me than meets the eye," said Lyta, as she faced him he saw the red and white glow normally not seen in her eyes. Sheraun wasn't about to disagree. After dinner that night G'Kar took Lyta aside and said, "You would have destroyed us." Looking hurt and thoughtful, Lyta answered, "No. It wouldn't have been necessary." Then thoughtfully, "I would simply have disabled the weapons systems. This crew hasn't done anything to me. If I killed anyone, it would be the one who gave the order. Besides, Captain Sheraun would not have carried out the order. He considered it illegal." "I am bunking with the crew. Where did they put you?" "This ship has quarters reserved for a flag officer. It is small but it is private and has enough room for Maya." "You named her Maya?" "It was Byron's mother's name," she replied wistfully. "Her middle name is Natasha, after my grandmother." "I think the captain has a thing for you, Lyta." "I know he does." "How do you feel about it?" "I like him G'Kar. He is a very good man, but what does he see in me?" "You don't look your best. You just gave birth and you haven't shrunk back to your pre- pregnant self." "Thanks G'Kar. I needed that. You forgot to mention that my breasts are swollen and I look like hell. Maybe he likes the 'looks like hell' look. Some men are hard to understand." *************************************************************** The trip to Minbar took a week and Lyta and G'Kar did their best to stay out of everyone's way. Lyta and Maya were popular amongst the rangers and she spent a large portion of her time with those who were off duty. Lyta tried her had at hand to hand combat with the young rangers. They found that she could move faster than they thought a human could. She was graceful and appeared to learn very quickly. Several male rangers had the lumps and bruises to prove it. She was introduced to the denn'boc and almost immediately put knots on the heads of half dozen rangers including three minbari. An older minbari ranger tested her and got thumped for his efforts. They were fascinated with her and respectful after her display of martial abilities. She even recorded some of the matches. The ship's telepath was a young male P-12 in his early twenties. He gave Lyta the hero worship routine until she was embarrassed. Captain Sheraun suggested that taking it gracefully was her only option. It came with the territory of doing things for others, at risk of your life, with no expectation of compensation. Lyta liked the young man, he was a ranger in final training and he was well respected by his fellow rangers. Captain Sheraun was attentive of Lyta. He had observed her match with his senior ranger and was impressed by her. He didn't try to hide his feelings for her. Lyta for her part behaved neutrally, but it didn't change things. What made it tough was knowing his feelings were real and not just infatuation. She admitted to herself that she found him very attractive. He wasn't a telepath, but he was disciplined, honest and caring. A woman could do a hell of a lot worse. A day out from Minbar, Lyta and Sheraun were walking down a passageway near the engineering plant and talking about life in general and life philosophies. Maya was sleeping and a young ranger was watching over her. Without thinking about it Sheraun put his arm around Lyta's waist. She didn't pull away. After a few steps he removed his arm from her waist. "I am sorry, Lyta. I was out of line," he said. Tilting her head she looked at him and replied, "Were you?" Sheraun's heart skipped two beats. "Captain. To say I am a telepath would be a gross understatement. You don't understand that a telepath doesn't need to scan someone to pick up and read really strong thoughts and feelings. In fact we have to learn to put up mental barriers to keep out the thoughts of others. Otherwise, we go insane. It is like standing in a large hall with hundreds of people and all of them shouting as loudly as is possible. With that thought in mind, I could read your feelings a sector away." Sheraun continued to walk as Lyta talked. They rounded a corner and were out of sight of any of the engineering personnel. Sheraun put his arm around Lyta again and turned her toward him. He bent down and kissed her lightly. Her response was to put her arms around his neck, stand on her tiptoes and kiss him so deeply he thought it would never end. He was on fire and his knees actually went weak. He stumbled but caught himself. Drawing away from her kiss, Captain Sheraun was almost breathless. He still held her in his arms and she still had her arms around his neck when a crewman came around the corner. Covering his surprise the crewman said, "Captain, you are wanted on the bridge." After delivering his message, the crewman spun on his heel and walked away. "Captain. This will be all over the ship in about two minutes," said Lyta smiling, her arms still around his neck. "I can live with it, if you can," he replied. Letting her go he turned and started toward the bridge. "This isn't over, captain," she said smiling at his retreating back. ******************************************************************END End part GL-B2 From: "Aubrey W. "I thought the warrior caste had no use for humans," said G'Kar. "In general that is true, but not all of us hew to that line of thought. I, for example, went against the wishes of my caste when I volunteered to help then Ambassador Sinclair train his first group of rangers. It infuriated my family when I continued to be a part of the rangers and wouldn't take part in our civil war. I thought the war was wrong. I am a sort of rogue, if you will," answered Sheraun. "You are, of course, thinking of my apparent relationship with Lyta, aren't you?" "Yes captain. I know you do not truly understand what she is." "You think I should be afraid of her?" ha asked. "No, not afraid, cautious," replied G'Kar. "Your clan is going to raise very strong objections to a relationship between you and a human." "Probably, but Lyta isn't just any human. She is unique." "Captain. That may be the understatement of the millennium," answered G'Kar. {Later that evening} Thinking about what he was going to say to Delenn and Sheridan tomorrow after they arrived on Minbar, and not looking forward to his family's reaction to Lyta, Sheraun knocked on the door to Lyta's assigned quarters. Lyta opened the door and Sheraun asked to come in. He took a seat on one of the two chairs in the cabin. Lyta lay down on the bed and snuggled Maya into her arms. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit, captain?" asked Lyta. "After earlier today, I think we need to talk," he said. "To say the least," she said, smiling at him. "You must have a thousand questions. Ask them. I will give you straight answers." "G'Kar told me I should be cautious, that I don't truly understand what you are." "He was telling the truth. Do you really want to know what I am? After you learn, you may not find me so appealing. You think you love me, and you do, but it isn't fair for you to love something you may not be capable of understanding." Lyta carefully disentangled herself from Maya, who was sleeping very deeply. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Lyta looked into Sheraun's mind. Sheraun felt the lightest of touches in his mind and knew she was scanning him. He was no longer in the cabin with Lyta, he was home talking to his father. They discussed the actions he had taken and beliefs he had adopted since he had been a very young man, and the results of those actions. There were many things he had done that caused his family and friends great pain and he could not change even one of them. In his mind he was seeing scenes that had never happened in his life's experiences. They featured a number of humans and a redheaded female in particular. Some of those scenes made the minbari warrior shed tears. Other scenes showed the Vorlon home world and things that were beyond his understanding. He heart ached with sorrow. He saw the happenings that Lyta had experienced since her involvement with the Vorlons, the loneliness, the rejection and despair, and the realizations of what she was and what she was becoming. He was acutely aware that she and those whom knew her thought of her as a what, not a who. She was a weapon, a thing of unimaginable power, with other abilities that no one would even dream of, with her sense of right and wrong as her only guide. She was truly a frightening entity. Sheraun was seeing Lyta sitting across from him again. "If that was supposed to make me reconsider my feelings toward you, it did," he said. "They are stronger than ever." "I am not surprised," she responded. She had him remove his robe to keep it from getting milk splotches on it. She had to explain about human females and how the mammary glands functioned. He smiled at her concern, but put his robe across the back of the chair he had been sitting in. Lyta made him sit on the bed and lean against the bulkhead. She straddled him and sat on his lap. "It's time you discover what you are letting yourself in for," she told him. He put his arms around her in response. Lyta put her arms around his neck and put her lips to his. Sheraun was on fire. He was stimulated beyond anything he could have imagined. His arms tightened around Lyta. Sitting on his lap she could feel him becoming aroused. She pulled away from him. When he opened his eyes, she could see that his arousal was so intense that he wasn't aware of his surroundings. It took several minutes for him to get control of his desires. "Is it what you expected?" asked Lyta. Sheraun had trouble answering her. His mind was spinning, trying to understand what he had just experienced. Meanwhile Lyta nuzzled his neck and snuggled up on his chest and shoulder. "I have never felt anything like that, before," he breathed. "That was only a little sample. Are you really sure you want the whole program. You could get badly burned." She told him. "Fire never felt so good," he replied. Lyta sat up, and kissed him again. It was a very long deep passionate kiss. His mind overloaded from the stimulus and he lost consciousness. Lyta pulled away from him. It was almost five minutes before Sheraun's mind came back to reality. "Are you still interested?" asked Lyta. All he could do was nod his head in the affirmative. "You are a sucker for punishment," she smiled. "It will be okay as long as I don't get carried away." Sheraun was totally wasted and all she did was kiss him. He was afraid of what would happen if they went any farther. Actually he was worried for himself. She apparently had no problems. His loins ached badly. It was very painful. He had never been aroused like this before. He wasn't sure he could survive a return engagement. He made his excuses and said goodnight. He was getting ready for bed when noticed the front of his tunic. It was soaked where her breasts had leaked on him. [Well, she did warn me], he thought smiling. He went to sleep wondering if any man could handle the redhead. He would be glad to die trying. Whitestar 71 settled into a high orbit over Minbar. Her shuttle dropped toward the planet's surface carrying Captain Sheraun, G'Kar, Lyta and Maya. G'Kar's ship was being piloted down by one of the whitestar's shuttle pilot's. Inside Interstellar Alliance headquarters, G'Kar and Lyta waited while Captain Sheraun went into Delenn's office. Sheraun bowed in greeting to Delenn who returned the gesture. "You wanted to see me, Entil'za?" he inquired. "Tell me about your patrol, and how you came to have G'Kar and Lyta aboard?" She asked. Captain Sheraun gave her a thorough report about his patrol and also gave her data crystals recorded onboard both G'Kar's ship and his whitestar. Delenn watched the videos with great interest. During her viewing, President Sheridan came into the office. "Good morning captain," he said to Sheraun. Delenn turned to look at both of them and she didn't like what she saw in Sheraun's eyes. "Is there a problem, captain?" she asked. Sheraun slightly shook his head, no. "Ask G'Kar to come in captain," said Delenn. G'Kar left Lyta and proceeded into Delenn's office. "Good morning, ambassador," said G'Kar. "G'Kar tell me about your travels this last year?" Requested Delenn. G'Kar gave them a complete rundown, leaving out any references to Lyta's activities as much as possible. "Seems like you have had some interesting, not to mention dangerous, adventures," said Sheridan. "Yes. I have a couple of legal questions concerning IA laws, Delenn." Delenn nodded for G'Kar to continue. "I believe outright killing an innocent person is defined as murder. Am I correct? Delenn nodded assent. She thought she knew where this was going and glanced at her husband, who looked very uncomfortable. "Then hiring someone to kill an innocent person would be the same as killing them, and ordering someone to do it would be at the least conspiracy to commit murder. Is that correct?" Delenn stared at G'Kar for a full minute, then answered, "That is correct." G'Kar then related his conversation with Lyta about someone ordering her and her daughter killed. "I believe John, that Lyta could make a good case against you for conspiring to murder her and her baby. She has the records from the Whitestar 71 as evidence." Sheridan's face turned beet red and he was obviously mad as hell. "Are you accusing me, G'Kar?" "No, but I think she will and she has a lot of personnel on her side." "Have Lyta come in," ordered Delenn. Sheridan looked like a trapped rat. Lyta entered carrying a sleeping baby in her arms. She smiled at Delenn. "Hello Delenn." Captain Sheraun stepped up behind Lyta and put his arms around her. Delenn was taken aback, but said nothing. It was the way Sheraun had done it, as if they were familiar with one another. They made an eye-catching couple, a 199-centimeters (not including the top of his bone crest), 127-kilogram male member of the warrior cast and a 176 centimeters, 66 kilogram redheaded human female. Sheraun was very large, even for a member of the warrior cast. President Sheridan was trying to disappear into the woodwork and not being very successful. "You need to know, Entil'za, I would not have carried out the president's order," said Sheraun. "I know, Sheraun. It was an illegal order. In the future all orders will come through me, or they won't be followed," answered Delenn. "I am curious, what is your relationship to Lyta. You only met her less than a week ago." "I am like you, Entil'za, I knew what I wanted, and it came to me. You are correct, my clan and family are going to be angry enough, finally, to disown me. It has been coming for years. I accept it," said Sheraun wistfully. His tone let anyone paying attention know he wished it weren't so. "It is what you get for, as the humans say, 'walking on the wild side'." Delenn walked around her desk and reached for Maya who was starting to wake up. Taking the infant she returned to her seat behind her desk and put the baby on her chest and nuzzled her. Maya shifted position and went back to sleep. "A mother's touch," said G'Kar. Delenn smiled. "Sheraun, if you don't object, I would like to talk to your father about you and Lyta," said Delenn. Sheraun nodded assent. G'Kar will you and Captain Sheraun wait outside. I want a few minutes alone with Lyta. John, you stay," said Delenn. Delenn loaded one of the data crystals into the viewer. It was from the whitestar and showed a debris field with bodies. It also showed the analysis of the bodies and debris. "That was what the whitestar found, John. This is what it came from." With that Delenn loaded the first of the two remaining crystals. As Sheridan watched the vessel's destruction, his blood got very cold. "That is what could have happened to Whitestar 71 if Captain Sheraun had tried to carry out your order," said Delenn in a flat voice. Sheridan looked at Lyta, who was now sitting in a chair watching the visual record of her handiwork. "You could have done that to Babylon 5?" Lyta just nodded slightly. "All I would have had to do was cause the spinning section to jam momentarily and the station would have torn itself apart. I am curious, though. Just what kind of monster do you think I am, and why? You never thought of Lorien as a monster." "You're not little miss docile telepath anymore. You're a killer, Lyta. Steven told me the incident on Drazi home world and I heard what you have done to people who have tried to kill you and G'Kar. You can kill in the coldest ways I ever heard of. Lorien never actually killed anyone directly that I know of," that's why I see you differently. "If you just kill a dozen assassins, more come to take their place. If you kill them in a horrifying manner, they aren't so anxious to get to you. It is a matter of psychology. It is why I destroyed the Drazi ship the way I did. I could have just as easily made their reactors and engines explode," replied Lyta, in a matter of fact tone. "I suppose my not being docile anymore scares the living hell out of you, doesn't it?" "Frankly, yes it does," replied Sheridan. "Do I frighten you, Delenn?" Delenn answered, "No. You have always been my friend. Friends don't fear friends. They respect and love them." Delenn put the last data crystal into the socket and the scenes of the whitestar being rendered powerless and drifting in space and the following transmissions played. Sheridan was visibly shaken by what he was seeing. "No one was harmed," Lyta pointed out. "I wanted to demonstrate the futility of trying to kill me. It isn't going to happen Mr. President. Get a PPG from one of your guards." Delenn called in the guard outside her office door. He had a sidearm. Lyta looked at the guard and said, "I want you to take out your PPG and shoot me." The guard looked puzzled. Sheridan nodded for him to comply. The guard was looking distraught. He hadn't signed on to just execute someone like this. Lyta commanded, "Shoot me until the power cap is empty." Mentally she forced the guard to comply. She stood not three meters in front of the guard as his PPG discharged repeatedly until its power cap was depleted. Lyta absorbed every round and grimaced at the end. She said, "That stings like hell." The guard was very distraught. He couldn't stop himself from shooting the lady in front of him, but he might as well have been using wet noodles. Delenn dismissed him with a warning to tell no one what he had witnessed. Sheridan appeared to be dumbstruck. An ordinary person would have been incinerated in Lyta's place. Lyta looked at Delenn and her husband, "The war cruiser that is in orbit overhead, I could destroy it as easily as I shut down the whitestar. I can do it from here and without line of sight." Delenn shifted Maya's position to get more comfortable. It was at that point that John really noticed the baby Delenn was holding to her breast and shoulder. "I am not a monster. I just want to be left alone to pursue whatever relationship I may have with Captain Sheraun," said Lyta. "What about your war with Psi Corps? That isn't just going to go away," noted Sheridan. "It has entered a new phase. There are to be no more physical attacks or killings by our side. We are obtaining the corps most closely held secrets and the records to support their authenticity. We are going to destroy the corps with their own records. Once the mundanes learn what has been going on for the past hundred years or so, Psi Corps as an organization and institute will be finished and with them will go the persecution of what are now called rogue telepaths. We will show the mundanes how to keep the telepaths from running amuck without organizations such as the corps." "Besides high adventures, what have you and G'Kar been up to these last months," asked Sheridan. "We have been working on my anger management and general enlightenment. I have been learning about hatred, understanding, forgiveness and other emotional experiences that I must learn how to handle. As you can see I have become a mother. That tends to cause a woman to review and refocus her priorities." Lyta reached across Delenn's desk and Delenn gave her the baby. Positioning Maya, she unsnapped the part of her blouse that covered her left nipple. The baby found it and started feeding. John looked at Delenn. "Is something wrong, Mr. President?" asked Lyta. "Mm, no," he responded. He kissed Delenn and took his leave. After he had gone, Delenn looked at Lyta, smiled, and said, "I think you and Maya just made him understand what you really are, a mother, a terribly powerful mother." Delenn hesitated a moment before continuing, "I am going to call Sheraun's father. I think he should meet you. Lyta. This is not going to be easy. It may not even be possible." Lyta handed Delenn a data crystal. Delenn put it in the socket and watched the combat matches Lyta had participated in on the whitestar. She was suitably impressed. She stepped over to her wall mounted communications system and made some quick entries on a keyboard. It took almost a minute for a response from the system. An old minbari with a massive bonecrest appeared on the viewer. "To what do I owe this call Satai?" asked the gentleman. "Valeck, you know well that I am no longer Satai. I am merely an ambassador to the Interstellar Alliance," replied Delenn. "You are still married to the 'Starkiller'." It was a statement not a question. Amused at the way the statement was phrased, Delenn replied, "Yes. I am still married to the president of the IA, but that has nothing to do with why I called." The minbari waited for her to continue. "When was the last time you saw Sheraun?" A dark expression crossed Valeck's face and then was gone. "It has been a number of cycles," he replied. "He doesn't keep any council with his family or clan. Why?" "I think he may be going to take a wife," replied Delenn. "It's his life and his choice. He hasn't asked for any advice in the past, so I don't expect him to start now." "This is different, Valeck. He wants to marry a human." The expression on Valeck's face was almost indescribable. It looked as if he were choking to death. "I am not surprised," he spat, "considering what he has done in the past. This will be the last straw. He will no longer be a member of this family or this clan." Lyta had moved to within the pickup's area of coverage while this exchange was taking place. "I said human, but the truth is she is only about half human," said Delenn. "Oh? And just what is the other half, as if it should make any difference," Valeck replied. "How about half Vorlon," Lyta said in interlac, into the pickup. Valeck's jaw visibly dropped at Lyta's statement. Delenn and Lyta waited a full minute for Valeck to recover. "I have never before heard of such an abomination," Valeck finally replied. "I know. We must keep our race pure," Delenn replied her voice dripping sarcasm. "What do you want from me?" he asked. "I would like for you to invite me and Lyta to supper," replied Delenn. "You will find it most interesting." Amused, Valeck replied, "1900 hours your time day after tomorrow. We are having a clan get together, and bring your husband. I want to meet him." With that he bowed and closed the channel. "Not the friendliest fellow in the galaxy, is he?" asked Lyta "Don't let him fool you. He is not what he seems," replied Delenn. Lyta looked at her, obviously awaiting an explanation. Delenn, instead of returning to her desk, went to sit on the couch on the other side of her office. Lyta followed and sat on the opposite end and faced her friend. Lyta, how much do you know about the Earth-Minbari War?" asked Delenn. "More than you can imagine. The Vorlons gave me more knowledge of events than I ever wanted. I know what got it started. I know about your part in starting and stopping it. I even know that you actually met John Sheridan at that time, even if you don't. What else did you have in mind?" "Lyta, I never met John Sheridan before he became commanding officer of Babylon 5." "I am sure you believe that, but I beg to differ." She explained about how Delenn had in fact spared Sheridan's and Franklin's lives." Delenn was stunned. "I never knew that." "What else did you have in mind, Delenn?" Delenn explained that Valeck was one of the four Grey Council members who had voted not to go to war with the humans over Dukhat's death. He wanted to contact them and resolve it without conflict. He didn't see any glory in attacking a foe that had no real chance of winning. In fact he quit the Grey Council over the issue after the war started. It had not made him popular with his family and clan. "He sounds a lot like Sheraun. He has an independent streak a kilometer wide. It's probably where all the conflict between them originates," observed Lyta. "This dinner will give the family a chance to look you over. They aren't going to like you, but it will be a chance for them to see the real you. After all, they have never actually met a real Vorlon before, or a half one for that matter, said Delenn, chuckling under her breath. "Are you sure it's alright to let these people know about my make up. It could scare the hell out of them?" asked Lyta. "I don't know about scaring them, but it will give you a chance to earn their respect as a warrior," Delenn replied. "I'm not a warrior, Delenn." I know, but after you beat their best, they will think you are. You were very impressive in the matches you showed me." Lyta laughed and shifted Maya to her other breast. Maybe the dinner would be fun after all. Lyta noted that there was almost nothing better than beating reality into someone like an arrogant warrior caste member, except sex. Delenn walked Lyta to the door and invited G'Kar to the dinner. She explained to Sheraun that she didn't think he would be welcome. "Old news, Entil'za Delenn, very old news," replied the captain. "I will be returning to my ship and leaving to continue our scheduled patrol, after I help Lyta find a place to stay." "She can stay with me Sheraun. I will help her find accommodations," offered Delenn. "I think I will stay a little while, also," said G'Kar. "I have never studied minbari customs and this is as good a chance as any. Besides, Lyta and I have a great many more places to visit. "G'Kar, you can't be serious about Lyta going with you when you leave. Are you?" asked Delenn. "She has a child to care for now." Looking thoughtful, G'Kar responded, "We have been very complimentary travel companions and she is an excellent bodyguard." "She may not be available when you are ready to leave, G'Kar," observed Sheraun. G'Kar agreed that this might become so. "Thank you for the offer Delenn, but what will your husband say?" asked Lyta. "Nothing. Besides, I have a son, David, you haven't met, yet." Sheraun took his leave and Lyta stepped away from the others to say farewell. Sheraun hugged Lyta and Maya and kissed both of them, then departed. G'Kar said to Delenn, "I've heard of fire and ice, but this is fire and even more fire." Delenn looked at G'Kar oddly, then smiled. It was late afternoon and Lyta had been settled into a small, but very nice apartment in the building that housed Delenn's and John's quarters. It was an annex of the IA headquarters building. Delenn invited Lyta over the next evening to chat and meet her month old son. Having settled in and done her grocery shopping, Lyta dressed for her visit to meet David, knowing that a month old infant would never recall the fact. Lyta was impressed. David was a quiet child, alert and observant of everything going around him. Lyta always loved seeing the various art objects with which Delenn always decorated her quarters. She thought it odd to see a piece that didn't seem to match the mood of the rest of the objects. "Delenn. Isn't that piece out of place amongst your other artworks?" Asked Lyta. "It is a gift from Londo for David when he reaches the age of majority," she replied. For some reason Lyta didn't care for it. She approached the shelf it was sitting on, to examine it more closely. Even though the keeper was dormant, Lyta had detected the life signs of the shadow object. "What did Londo tell you about this item?" "Only that it was very old and was handed down from one generation to the next. He said it contained holy water from one the rivers, that were held to be holy in ancient times," replied Delenn. "I hate to tell you, but it doesn't contain water, holy or otherwise. It contains what we call a keeper. It is one of those things Steven told you he found on Mars." "What shall we do with it. I mean, how do we kill it?" asked Delenn. "We don't. I do. I can kill it without opening the container," replied Lyta. Feeling the powerful telepathic presence, the keeper awakened, but it only had a moment's consciousness, before Lyta reduced it to dust using her telekinetic abilities. "It is dead, Delenn. When the container is opened you will find only a little pile of dust. Keep it intact and never let Londo know what we found and how we dealt with it." "It will be our secret. Thank you, Lyta. You may have saved my son," replied Delenn. It was the afternoon of the day of the dinner at Valeck's home and Delenn had arranged for a babysitter for Maya and David for later that evening. The lady was a minbari telepath from Delenn's clan. She had arrived early so she could become acquainted with Lyta and Maya. Delenn had introduced her earlier as Nadini. Lyta had insisted on the babysitter being a telepath. She was afraid a normal might not be able to cope with her daughter. Maya was already using her abilities and she wasn't two weeks old yet. Admittedly, so far, it was limited to empathetically letting her know when she was hungry, wet or otherwise in need of attention, but even that could be unsettling for a normal. Lyta looked at what few outfits she had and chose to wear a white blouse/blue pants outfit and a black braided shoulder cover. She let her hair down and brushed it out. Valeck wouldn't recognize her as the woman he had seen on the communication imager. She walked back out into the main room of the apartment. Nadini noted that it seemed very appropriate dress for a dinner party. Delenn and John knocked on Lyta's door. Lyta opened the door and brought David in and gave him to Nadini. They bid Nadini good evening until later, and joined John. End part C From: "Aubrey W. "Exactly what are you talking about Lyta?" asked John. "John, we think Sheraun's family and clan members will be trying to find fault with her and humiliate her," answered Delenn. John noticed that Lyta moved like a cat. She had always been very graceful in her movements, but he didn't remember her looking quite so predatory. He wondered how he had missed it. He realized there must be a lot that he had missed about her. G'Kar met them at the ground car. The trip to Valeck' compound only took about thirty minutes. They were met at the door by Valeck. He showed surprise that Lyta was not dressed formally as were the Sheridans and G'Kar. He questioned her. Lyta informed him, in interlac, that she expected to be tried and humiliated by those who did not care for Captain Sheraun. Lyta was left alone in what appeared to be a library while, G'Kar, and the Sheridans were led away by Valeck. "Do you read minbari?" asked a voice in passable interlac. Lyta turned to face the owner of the voice. "Whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?" she asked, even though the strong family resemblance would have identified the woman as a sister of Sheraun. "I am Marlan, Sheraun's younger sister," she answered. 'You are obviously Lyta Alexander, the human Sheraun is smitten by." Lyta inclined her head in assent. "I wouldn't use the word smitten. He likes me, that's all." "I hear he wants to marry you," Marlan replied. "You must be something very special." "You don't approve of your brother's choices or actions?" inquired Lyta. "Actually I do," she answered. "He is his own mind. He doesn't have his head stuck up his rear end. I wish I were more like him. He is so much like father. That's why they can't stand one another. Like I said, you must be very special." "I am not sure what constitutes special," answered Lyta. "I only met your brother a little less than two standard weeks ago. His ship almost collided with G'Kar's ship, while I was giving birth to my daughter." "Who was with you during the birth, the Narn?" She asked. "No. He was piloting the ship. I gave birth in the toilet facilities, alone." Marlan made a face. "Alone?" "There wasn't anyone to help, besides it isn't the first time a human has given birth alone and it won't be the last," responded Lyta. Just as Lyta started her sentence a young minbari male entered the room. Upon hearing what Lyta said, he commented in minbari, "Marlan what do you expect from animals?" "You should at least have the manners to say that to her face in a language she understands," shot back Marlan. Another minbari male entered the room and commented to the first, "It this the animal Sheraun is taken by? She doesn't look like much to me." The exchange had been in minbari. Marlan noticed a wicked smile on Lyta's face and wondered what she found so humorous. "She wouldn't be smiling if she knew what we were saying," said the first male to the second. The second male laughed and they left the room. In his study Valeck had taken a seat behind a desk and motioned for the Sheridans and G'Kar to be seated. "What did you want to show me, Delenn?" Delenn proceeded to play the same data crystals that she had played earlier that day for John for him. He watched in silence. After the crystals had been played, he asked, "Was this supposed to impress me?" "No," Responded Delenn. "It was meant to prevent your family and clansmen embarrassing you and themselves by trying to humiliate Lyta." Valeck just shrugged his shoulders. "I would like to talk to your husband alone, if you don't object." Delenn and G'Kar left the room. Walking into a very large front room, G'Kar commented to Delenn, "He wasn't much impressed by the information on the data crystals." "Don't let him fool you, G'Kar. He was very impressed and his response tells me my worst fears are going to come true," responded Delenn. "Your worst fears?" "Yes. They are going to try to humiliate Lyta." "That could be hazardous." "If she accidentally kills one of them it will not be good." "You tried to warn your host. It is his responsibility now," responded G'Kar. Other guests were arriving and the room was starting to seem a lot smaller. Valeck and John Sheridan rejoined the rest of the guests in the front room. Since some of the clan members had not seen one another in some time there was much hubbub as they greeted one another. It's time we joined the others in the front room, Lyta," said Marlan. "You go ahead. I don't know anyone except G'Kar and the Sheridans. This is a family affair and I am certainly not family," responded Lyta, neutrally. Marlan closed the door leaving Lyta alone in the library. "Is it any good," he asked in interlac. "You haven't read it?" she replied in perfect minbari. "No. I only collect them," he answered and then realized she had answered him in minbari. "Does anyone else know you are proficient in minbari?" "No, but G'Kar would expect it, considering what I have done during our travels." "You are aware of how some of our clan feels about you?" "How much do you know about me?" asked Lyta. "Delenn played the data crystals for me. You are impressive," he answered. "Are you aware that I am a telepath?" "It wasn't brought out, so, no, I didn't know that." "I have been listening to the stray thoughts of your guests. Some of them plan to humiliate me and kill me," she said matter-of-factly. "I believe a few object lessons and some personal experience will be in order." Valeck responded, "I don't think I like the sound of that." "Don't worry. I promise I won't kill anyone," she said. "However, I don't promise not to send a few of them to your nearest medical facility." "It's time for dinner, I suppose we should join the others," said Valeck. Lyta preceded Valeck through the door into the hallway and followed him into the very large dining room. Most everyone had been seated at the three long wide tables in evidence. He guided her to a seat at the head of the largest table and he took the seat next to her. There were murmurs amongst the other guests. Lyta could sense intense hostility in many of the guests, but decided to ignore it. Valeck stood again and while the food was being served began to talk about minbari history, the clan's history and how the clan had been part of it. He elaborated on the many achievements of various clan members and introduced those who had made their contributions in the recent past, since the last clan get together. He never mentioned Sheraun in his recounting. He also introduced Delenn and John Sheridan and G'Kar. Valeck returned to his seat and dinner began. Lyta only barely tasted her food. Her actions did not go unnoticed. The meal was almost finished. "Is there a problem with the food, human?" came an inquiry from about half way down the table. The speaker had used minbari. Lyta ignored the question. She looked at Valeck and asked, in interlac, "Can you open communications with the cruiser in orbit after the meal?" Valeck nodded assent. One of the guests at the second table stood up and asked, "Aren't you going to introduce the human female?" Lyta detected no animosity in the speaker. Valeck responded, "She is my personal guest and preferred not being introduced." "Isn't she the human female that Sheraun is sniffing after?" demanded another guest. Valeck admitted that she was the woman Sheraun was courting as it were. Valeck looked at Lyta. Lyta gave him a brief nod. "Honored guests and family, it pleases me to introduce Ms. Lyta Alexander of earth. She is here at my request and seems to be my son's choice for a mate. As much as it may anger many of you I find her a worthy addition, if it, in fact, comes to pass." This caused an uproar amongst most of the guests. There were demands that Sheraun be disowned and other demands that Lyta be thrown out of the house. The expected demands that she demonstrate her worthiness to be a member of a warrior caste family and clan were immediate and loud. "I accept your demands," shouted Valeck. "We must adjourn to the main meeting hall to accommodate these demands." In the main meeting hall Valeck opened a communications channel with the war cruiser. The captain appeared to be standing in front of Valeck and Lyta. The communications system apparently had a holographic imaging system. Valeck put a data crystal into a socket and the scene of the bounty hunter ship being destroyed was shown to all of the guests and was sent to the cruiser at the same time. Valeck stepped away and left Lyta center stage. Lyta looked at the guests and said in perfect minbari, "I destroyed that ship without weapons. Is there anyone here who doesn't believe that?" "Images can be faked," came a response from a number of guests. She looked at the image and said, "Captain. I am afraid you, your crew and your ship are to be used for an object lesson." Less than a minute later the dinner party heard the sound of emergency alarms coming from the cruiser. The captain's face was losing its color. "I have an emergency!" exclaimed the captain. "Keep the channel open, captain. It is necessary for the lesson," said Lyta. "Captain! We have lost main engines, the reactors are shut down and won't restart and we have lost maneuvering thrusters! We are beginning to drift!" exclaimed a voice from off screen. "Captain, the thrusters are back online and they are pushing us toward the planet!" Said another off screen voice. "Do you see how easy that is, ladies and gentlemen," said Lyta. There were boos and hisses and claims of trickery. "Captain! The reactors are back online and they are starting to go critical!" exclaimed the off screen voice. The captain's image turned to Lyta, "You are doing this?" "It's part of the lesson, captain. I am terribly sorry, but these people think this is a trick," replied Lyta. Delenn, John and G'Kar were watching with looks or horror on their faces. Many guests observing Delenn, John and G'Kar realized that the danger to the ship's crew was real, not some kind of trick. "Lyta, Please. Don't do this. Those people on the ship haven't harmed you," pleaded Delenn. "Very true Delenn. The helpless women and children that your warrior caste slaughtered hadn't done anything to them either. It is easy to be heroic slaughtering someone who cannot possibly fight back," replied Lyta in a cold impersonal tone. By now the guests were shouting for Valeck or someone to do something. "You do understand, captain, why you are going to be killed like vermin, with no hope of survival? I need to make a point. I will begin breaking up your ship in about forty-five standard minutes. You will find that your lifepods are non-functional. There is no escape. It is nothing personal," said Lyta. The room was growing silent as what was happening started sinking into the minbari minds. "Lyta," said Valeck, who by now was sure she intended to destroy the ship and its crew, "These people have many loved ones serving on that ship. You don't have to do this." "I am afraid I do. It is necessary for them to understand helplessness," she answered. There was total silence in the room. The ship's captain's inability to save his crew and its effects on him were evident. He wouldn't say anything, but his eyes said it for him. It was one thing to be killed in battle, but this was simple execution. Valeck remembered that the captain had been a young man during the Earth-Minbar War and had been opposed to it. He couldn't understand why he was being slaughtered to prove a point. It seemed so senseless. Lyta let the situation go on for almost the full forty-five minutes. "Captain! We have thruster control again and the reactors are returning to normal!" said an off screen voice. "We have main engines back online, sir." "Thank you for your assistance, captain," said Lyta turning to the crowd of guests. "Now that I have made my point, it only remains for the rest of the entertainment." It dawned on Delenn that she did not know this Lyta. She was still shaking from what she had witnessed. John and G'Kar were looking at one another in complete disbelief. The crowd was silent. Any sign of merriment had been totally destroyed. "There is one item left to address before everyone calls it a night," said Lyta. No one was laughing at her now. She was no longer a joke. "There were some of you who came intending to humiliate me and a few intended to kill me. I want those who would kill me to step forward." No one moved. "I am a telepath and I know who you are. You will come forward or everyone will suffer." There was shuffling amongst the crowd and ten minbari males came forward. They varied in age from young adults to old adults. Lyta had spoken to Valeck and he had assembled a variety of minbari weapons, everything from ppgs to denn'boks to knives. Lyta walked into the center of the hall, turned and looked at the ten men. "Take whichever weapon or weapons you wish. You can wait and use the same weapon another has used if you wish. Take it and come here." It only took Lyta a few minutes to leave the men laying on the floor barely conscious and battered. The men were taken to the bathroom and cleaned up. The gathering was breaking up and the mood was somber. Delenn made apologies and she, John, G'Kar and the now hated Lyta started to depart. As Delenn and the others were getting into the ground car, Valeck took Delenn aside and leaned close to her. Into her ear he whispered, "I know it won't mean anything to him, but tell Sheraun I approve his choice of mate." Delenn nodded assent and rejoined her husband and friends. In the car Delenn said to Lyta, "Thank you for not doing any permanent damage." Lyta just gave her a small smile. The rest of the return trip was in silence. ****************************************************************** Delenn was sitting yoga style on the bedroom floor staring into the light of a candle meditating. John sat down beside her and looked into the candle, waiting for her to acknowledge his presence. Shortly, she turned her head a little, just enough to signal that she was aware of him. "A penny for your thoughts." She waited almost two minutes before responding, "I am thinking of all the trials Lyta has undergone since she first came aboard Babylon 5." When she didn't continue, John turned his head to more directly face her and waited. "No human or minbari has been so sorely tested as she, not even Sinclair/Valen." John waited for her to continue. "You died and Lorien brought you back, but you were still human and for all intents the same as before." The waiting between her comments was nerve wracking. She could take hours to finish an observation he would espouse in five minutes. "John. What would you do if you could kill with a thought. If you could destroy a warship as if it were nothing, would you be afraid?" He had to admit to himself that line of thought had never occurred to him. For him the idea was beyond dreaming. It was something he needed to think about in depth. "John. When I was Grey Council, I was responsible for many lives, but I did not truly understand. Even when I sent whitestars out, I didn't understand, not until you had to order that crew to their deaths just before Coriana 6. I cannot comprehend what it must be like to be able to kill with a mere thought. What it must be like to have to guard your every thought, so you don't harm someone? I think I would be terrified." "I don't know, Delenn." She had given him something to think about, that he didn't want to think about. How could anyone who didn't have that power, had never exercised it, ever hope to understand it? The thoughts were giving him a headache. Tonight would be one he would remember for the rest of his life, what there was of it. *************************************************************************** It was early morning and very dark outside. Lyta was sitting up in bed feeding Maya. A point of light began to appear at the foot of the bed. It became very brilliant and then faded into the form of Lorien. Lyta knew what was coming. "You shouldn't have interfered," said Lorien. I couldn't let him die. Besides, no one knows except Delenn, and she can't tell anyone. I saw to that," replied Lyta. "You will pay a terrible price for your actions." "I know. It was the only way to make them forget what really happened. When they think of me or someone mentions my name they will be revolted. I wiped their memories as best I could under the circumstances. There were more than a hundred of them." "It's little comfort, but no one could have done better," he observed. "Why are you allowing Delenn to remember the truth?' "I feel she deserves it because of what she has done for me in the past. Maybe, just maybe, I want at least one person who will not be offended or sickened by my presence or the very thought of me," replied Lyta, with a smile at the corner of her lips. "It doesn't matter, Lyta. You have a destiny and personal feelings only increase your difficulty. Your compassion for your fellow beings is laudable, but you are no longer one of them," he reminded her. "If I don't follow orders, I suppose I will be destroyed. I would expect nothing less." "Lyta. You misunderstand. Your compassion is what makes you perfect for this job. You are essentially indestructible. It is doubtful you can be killed by anything except time and we aren't sure about that. Your compassion will keep you from destroying entire races, the function for which the Vorlons engineered you. They forgot about that, fortunately. I made a few changes in you, for the best it seems." Shifting Maya to her other breast, Lyta said, "You think if it was known what I can do, they would want me to extend Sheridan's life." Lorien nodded. "That must be allowed to continue unchanged." "Will I see you again?" "Certainly," answered Lorien, eyes twinkling as his image faded to darkness. Lyta spent the remainder of the night mulling over their conversation. ************************************************************************** In her office, Delenn was surprised, but pleased to see Lyta come through her door. An earlier discussion with her husband about last nights dinner had been bothering her ever since. She had two memories of the dinner and was bothered by the experience. "Good morning, Delenn," greeted Lyta. "Lyta. I have a problem," said Delenn. John stuck his head in the door and saw Lyta. His smile disappeared and was replaced by a frown. He left without speaking. "I have two memories of last night. I think one of them is real, but I don't know which one." "What do you want from me?" asked Lyta. "I want to know which one is real. I also think you are responsible." "Tell me about them," said Lyta. Delenn told her about picking her up at her apartment and that both of them were excited about the dinner. She told about meeting Valeck and his being impressed with Lyta's beauty and her contributions during the shadow war, the earth civil war and to the Interstellar Alliance. "You were a hit with many of the guests. Everything was going very well until the fight demonstrations." "What went wrong there?" asked Lyta. "One of the young men slipped and was dealt a lethal blow to the head by his older brother." "I don't understand what that has to do with me, Delenn?" "When the young man fell one of the guests, a physician, examined him and declared him dead." Hesitating a moment, she continued, "It was then that everyone in the house apparently froze where they were, except you and me." Lyta said nothing and waited for Delenn to continue. "You said he could be revived and sent me to get a medkit. You somehow fixed his head wound and brought him back to life. I saw your hands glow like Lorien's, after we took out Kosh's replacement, and he revived John." "You want to know which of these is true? Which do you want to be true?" Looking at her friend, Delenn said, "I prefer to believe you saved the boy." "I can't do the same for John. Lorien has forbidden it. We spoke during the middle of the night. The hatred and loathing I generated amongst Sheraun's family and clan and G'Kar and John by giving them the new memories, is the price I must pay for my interference." Delenn came around her desk and hugged her friend very tightly. "You will never be able to speak of this to anyone, Delenn. That is the price you must pay for knowing the truth." As Delenn released Lyta, her eyes were brimming with tears. "We all have crosses we must bear, Delenn. It is not fair, but it is how things are." John had stuck his head back in the doorway just in time to see Delenn release Lyta. "Delenn, I need to see you," he said. Lyta smiled at Delenn and left very conscious of the glare she was receiving from John Sheridan. "How can you be so chummy with her after last night?" asked John. "Unfortunately, John, there are things you will never understand, and Lyta is one of them." ********************************************************* Later that same day, Valeck contacted the orbiting war cruiser. He inquired of the captain what was his ship's status. He was confused when the captain didn't seem to know what he was talking about in response to questions about the previous night. He learned that nothing had occurred during the evening or night. Feeling a bit foolish, he decided to drop his inquiry. He wondered what Sheraun would make of Lyta when he learned of the happenings at last night's dinner. He entertained the foolish thought that it had been his imagination for a moment, and then let it pass. End part D From: "Aubrey W. She was beginning to access memories of Vorlon technology that would allow her to subtlety introduce new items into the IA via minbari companies, which were really fronts that could keep the money flowing into her war chest. Working with several molecular biologists, she was able to guide their efforts in developing and patenting a substance that could be grown and processed into strands finer than spider's silk and a hundred times stronger than presently available metals. It could be made into fabric, which was lighter weight than normal silks and was essentially bullet proof. After that she led her teams to develop a method of growing diamond type crystals that were a hundred times finer than talcum powder, she helped them combine it into the new thread they were manufacturing. The result was very light weight fabric that could dissipate the heat energy of multiple PPG pulses. Her teams also developed an insulating compound that could be inserted between layers of the crystal impregnated fabric to add protection from the heat that was being dissipated by the outer layer of the garment. The first to reap the benefits of these developments were the rangers and firefighters. Working with Delenn, Lyta's front companies got their first of many contracts with the rangers. After she had demonstrated her new 'cloth', the rangers changed clothing requirements. Lyta turned over the operations of the companies to local minbari businessmen. Clothing was only the first product to make use of her new fibers. The diamond type crystals would have many uses where heat dissipation and related qualities were required, including armor. During this period Lyta helped G'Kar with his research and did some telepath work for the local IA officials. ****************************************************************** It had been just under seven months since Lyta and G'Kar had arrived on Minbar. G'Kar was ready to leave and Lyta approached him. "Am I still welcome as a traveling companion?" she asked. "Always, Lyta," responded the Narn. "Is the little one ready to go?" Maya was seven months old, but already she was walking quite well. "We are ready." "We will leave tomorrow morning, Lyta." ********************************************************* A whitestar exited its jump point about a minute before G'Kar's ship vanished into the local jump gate. On the whitestar's bridge the sensors barely had time to identify G'Kar's ship before it vanished. Captain Sheraun who had been in good spirits a moment before, suddenly looked depressed. Somehow he knew Lyta wouldn't be there to greet him. Onboard G'Kar's ship, G'Kar asked Lyta, "Do you think it was his ship?" "I know, G'Kar, I sensed him just before they jumped to normal space. He was looking forward to seeing me," replied Lyta. "We can turn back." Wistfully she said, "No, G'Kar, that's not necessary. When he learns of my performance at the dinner, his interest in me will cease to exist." "I don't think so, Lyta." "You are a hopeless romantic, G'Kar. "One of us has to be." "You don't have to pilot this thing, G'Kar. It'll go where I tell it." ******************************************************* "Where are we Lyta?" asked G'Kar. "Mm, closest I can come is, we are about a hundred light years from the nearest IA outpost," answered Lyta, While looking down on the very beautiful planet below them. It was the first thing besides hyperspace they had seen, since they left Minbar. It was slightly larger than earth, but a lack of heavy metals gave it a gravity almost exactly that of earth. There were no indications of advanced civilization. Scans had revealed only narrow paths similar to those made by herds of migrating animals. The planet's axis was perpendicular to its path around the sun, which gave it a temperate climate over the most of its surface. It wouldn't have seasons as such, which made the evidence of migratory paths suspicious. Lower flights over the surface had revealed no buildings of any kind. For practical purposes there was no evidence of sentient life. They landed in the middle of one of the narrow areas that had looked like a migratory path from the air. It was just that, but whatever used it wasn't very large. There were prints of several types of animals, but none were seen from the ground level. Lyta started a survey following the narrow path at an altitude of less than two hundred meters and never saw anything larger than very small deer type of animals. She recorded the available data for future reference and moved the ship back into hyperspace. "I thought you said the Vorlons visited this planet, and it had some sort of civilization?" inquired G'Kar. "I did, but the memories I have indicate that was twenty-five thousand years ago. I suppose they could have killed themselves off in some kind of war. Let the explorers figure it out," retorted Lyta. The next eight planets only revealed one civilization with space faring technology. Seven had sentient beings in various stages of civilization, but none were ready to learn that they were not alone in the universe. *********************************************************************** "Lyta. I am beginning to think that our adventure may be something of a dud," said G'Kar. "Why? Just because everywhere we go is not whiz-bang, with someone trying to kill you, is no reason to get depressed," she replied. After all, didn't you want to study cultures and religions?" "Yes." *********************************************************************** Six months out from Minbar, they phased into normal space and found themselves about five hundred thousand kilometers from an earthlike planet. Scans revealed a system of satellites in orbit. Closer scrutiny of the largest moon revealed the presence of a station of some kind. This species might be advanced enough to be approached. It was worth a careful look. "How do you want to do this, G'Kar?" asked Lyta. "We get close and monitor their communications and see what they have for surface development," answered the Narn. They spent the next week in high orbit monitoring the communications and surface activity on the planet. On the planet there were many different factions with their own governments and areas of political control. It reminded Lyta and G'Kar of the divisions on Earth. The various factions had developed alliances among themselves. There wasn't a central point of government of political control. There was a political organization that was loosely organized that moderated arguments between members, but had limited enforcement powers. G'Kar moved his ship into a lower orbit. At this point electronic surveillance equipment in several of the 'countries' detected its presence. Their space programs were very early in their development and no one could send anything up to check the intruder out. "Have you found anyplace that looks good for a landing,?" G'Kar . "I have found what looks to be a large city that houses the of alliance referred to in their communications broadcasts. I suppose it is as good a place to start as any. I am going to try to make contact with them from up here," replied the Narn. "Have you been able to get anything from them telepathically?" They had been able to decipher transmissions that were some sort of audio/video combination and gotten their first looks at what the natives looked like. Feline, was the first impression that Lyta got looking at the natives in the audio/video transmissions. Graceful and beautiful was her second impression. Some of the audio/video presentations had reminded her of an earth ballet. The computers were working on identifying references for language translation. Lyta had easily been able to isolate single minds in the population below, but lacking audible and visual references rendered her efforts at learning the languages she encountered difficult. Like earth, there were many different languages and dialects within these languages. While her Vorlon enhanced mind was the equal of any computer, even she had to have references. *********************************************************************** The young Ursing radar operator had passed the alarm the instant the object had appeared on his screen. The computer because of its altitude did not recognize it. Nothing , but a satellite, should have been where the object was. His superior ordered all targeting radars to track the object. Unlike the general search radar that had first detected the object, the targeting radars and their computers, old as they were, could track the object and determine its course, altitude and speed, even though it was far outside any weapons range. As G'Kar's ship passed overhead in each country, the scene in the first one was repeated many times. Most of the weapons systems on the planet that could, were targeting him. *********************************************************************** "I don't think the natives are friendly," said G'Kar. "We are an unknown, therefore, we are something to be feared," replied Lyta. "Their reaction is normal." "Have you had any luck getting a response from anyone down there?" "G'Kar, you will be the second one to know when I do." "Are you ready to play target?" "No, but we will have to land sooner or later, regardless." "Here we go, Lyta." *********************************************************************** G'Kar dropped toward the planet until they were fifty kilometers from the surface. In the various capitols this move caused minor panics. They were still far beyond weapons range and no one was answering their calls. In the capitols of the largest and most powerful nations, the phones were ringing off their hooks as leader after leader tried to find assurances that the ship wasn't a secret weapon of one of their competitors. In every country that had them interceptor aircraft were being scrambled to meet the threat. *********************************************************************** Watching the aircraft on the scanners, Lyta remarked, "I think we have their attention." "I'd settle for a response to our communications efforts," replied G'Kar. "They shouldn't be able to hurt us," commented Lyta. "Oh? And why not?" asked G'Kar. "While you were doing research on Minbar, I had the ship outfitted with new armor. We have two centimeters of armor made from that material my company developed, with ten centimeters of my new insulation between it and our main hull. The computers and weapons were upgraded too. I forgot to tell you about it," answered Lyta. G'Kar turned and gave her a strange look. "Get over it, G'Kar. We may not be able to take out a destroyer, but any raiders, dumb enough to attack us, are in for a rude surprise." At Lyta's statement, G'Kar dropped further into the atmosphere. At ten kilometers he leveled off and reduced speed to five hundred kilometers per standard hour. Ship's sensors detected changes in the targeting radars indicating that lock-on had been achieved. Aircraft were now approaching on intercept courses. There were still no responses to Lyta's attempts to communicate. "I am going to try and keep them from damaging us," commented Lyta. Saying that she closed her eyes and let her mind expand until she could sense and locate every aircraft and missile installation within a three hundred kilometer radius. "They are firing missiles at us, G'Kar." "I am detecting them on our sensors," replied G'Kar. The missiles that were being launched detonated just after clearing their launchers. Inside the launch control centers there was chaos. In addition to the destruction of the SAM's (surface-to-air missiles), the targeting and tracking radars became non-operational. As the aircraft closed to missile range, Lyta turned her attention to them. The SAM threat had been neutralized. Several fighters attempted to launch their missiles and found that their engines had failed. Without power, their weapons systems were non-functional. As they fell away toward the ground, G'Kar piloted his ship toward the city that was apparently the one with the world alliance, such as it was. Dropping to less than six hundred meters, G'Kar flew over the city at less than two hundred kph. Sighting what appeared to be a large stadium he chose that as his landing area. Ten minutes later his ship was on the ground. "Well, Lyta, what now?" "We wait. Their police and military should be getting here before too long. Let them get settled first. I think they will try to contact us. Let me take it from there. You and Maya stay in the ship." Thinking for a moment, she continued, "I don't have as good a handle on the language as I would like. There are so many of them. I will have to play it by ear." "You humans have a saying for every occasion," replied G'Kar. "Just part of our versatility, G'Kar," answered Lyta. It had been over two hours since they had landed and G'Kar and Lyta had been watching first the police and then what was obviously the military set up exclusion areas and weapons, all trained on the ship. They had deployed at least a thousand troops around the stadium grounds. There was evidence of a public communications system being set up farther back toward the stands. It was probably the local version of ISN. A ground vehicle approached the front of the ship and stopped about 30 meters from it. Two men(?) stepped from it. Using the ship's scanners Lyta took a closer look and could see the trappings of an apparently high rank military person. The other was dressed in what she guessed was a business suit. Opening an outer hatch and lowering a stairway from the lower part of the ship, Lyta told G'Kar, "Here goes nothing. Retract the stairs as soon as I step off of them. Monitor and record everything that happens." *********************************************************************** "What do you think, general?' asked the diplomat. "They haven't done anything so far except sit there. It is almost as if they are waiting for us to make the first move," replied General Torok. "I am uneasy, but they could have come in shooting, so we will see." An aide climbed out of the back of the vehicle and set up several chairs and a table in front of the vehicle. As they watched a stairway was lowered from the bottom of the ship and a slender being with hair like fire descended to the ground. It stopped there and carefully looked around in all directions in a slow and deliberate fashion. After a few minutes, apparently at ease with what it saw, it began to walk toward them in at a leisurely pace. It stopped when it was about 4 meters away, apparently waiting for something. It studied the general, the diplomat and the troops even more carefully than it had at the bottom of the stairway. It held out one of its hands and revealed a small softly glowing ball. The general was obviously apprehensive, while the diplomat was curious. "Greetings," a neutral voice said, and the glow of the ball changed as the words were spoken. They had not seen the being's lips move. "I wish peace with you", it continued and then went back to waiting. The diplomat looking intrigued, asked, "How is it you speak our language?" "Translator device programmed during observation time," responded the redheaded alien. The diplomat wasn't sure he trusted appearances, but he would later swear the being was amused by the encounter. It had what appeared to be laughter in its eyes. He said, "I am Ambassador Hental. I represent what passes for a planetary government on Glenthor. That is what we call our planet." Hesitating , Lyta replied, "I understand. I am Lyta." Then thoughtfully, "I am...traveling on quest." The diplomat looked at the general, puzzled. "You are seeking something? What?" asked the general. "Yes. Understanding," replied Lyta through the orb. She was carefully reading their body language and correlating what she saw with what they said and what they were thinking. The diplomat was at ease. He was satisfied to let things proceed and see where they went. The general on the other hand was very uncomfortable. He was suspicious by nature and training. It was part of what he was, a competent military leader. She was disturbed though because the general had snipers deployed and they had her head targeted. With a thought she deceived them into actually targeting the general and the diplomat. If he gave a signal to fire, he would dead before his heart beat again. The rest of the military men deployed around the ship would swear they had spent the time at the beach. Lyta took a chair and sat down at the small table. From all appearances she didn't have a care in the world, which was true. The two men looked at one another and also sat down. "Lyta, what can we do for you?" asked the diplomat. "Supplies, information. We will give information and technology in return," answered Lyta. "You are not alone?" queried the general. "Have offspring and traveling companion," she answered. She was bothered by what she saw in the general's mind. He was opportunistic and was a power broker and seeker. It wasn't a good combination. The diplomat, on the other hand was relieved. The mention of her offspring caused him to relax noticeably. In his mind he equated having offspring with one as being a sign of non-hostile intentions. The snipers who were targeting the diplomat shifted their aim to the general, however, from their point of view their rifles never moved. "When do we get to meet them?" asked the general. Lyta saw his intentions in his mind, and replied, "Soon. They are wanting to smell the plants and feel the breeze." She sensed the general's intense increase in anticipation. He could already see how capturing the ship would raise his standing. Killing her and her companion and capturing her young would be so much the better. Having the ambassador get killed at the same time would be another plus. He didn't like the man and he was a civilian thorn in the general's side. If he was to be killed accidentally, who could blame him. Unfortunately for the general and his staff aides, Lyta and company were not regular, run-of-the-mill sheep. The snipers were lined up on what they thought were Lyta, the odd alien and the ambassador. In fact they were aiming at the general and his two top aides. Three meters behind the general, his aids were whispering to each other about what was to come. The general moved his hand in the prearranged gesture and his senior staff aide spoke into a communicating device he was holding in his hand. The word was received by the snipers and they began to squeeze the triggers of their weapons. In less than two seconds from three separate parts of the stadium, three separate bullets were on their way to the targets. The bullets were very special. They were hypersonic, thin metal, filled with a very heavy liquid metal. They would shatter penetrating a skull bone, generating a massive hydrostatic shock. An explosion without any explosive. One of them would shatter a skull like a high explosive detonated internally, raining skull fragments and liquefied brains over a five-meter area. There was a sickening splat as the heads of the general's aides vanished in a rain of liquefied brains and skull bone fragments. The general moved suddenly and the bullet aimed at his head whizzed by and tore a 16 centimeter hole in the ground 10 meters beyond the general's position. Moving quickly, the general reached the body of his senior aide and grabbed the communication device, but before he could speak into it, the sniper had reloaded, reacquired his target and fired again. The general's head exploded further showering the diplomat and Lyta with brain bone fragments and gore. Lyta rendered the snipers unconscious and looked at the ambassador. Ambassador Hental was visibly shaken. He looked at the bodies and the ground vehicle. A major got out, and talking into a communication device, walked over to the ambassador. "We have the snipers in custody, sir," said the major, handing a cloth to Lyta so she could wipe the blood and gore from her face and clothing. Wiping herself, Lyta said, "Ambassador, I need to clean up. Can we meet here again in about one standard hour?" The ambassador nodded and stepped over to the bodies. He wasn't squeamish, but it was a mess, not for the weak of stomach. He realized that the redheaded alien had addressed him in perfect Glenthorian, the official diplomatic language, and the orb had never changed brightness. He turned to ask it how it had managed that, but it was at the steps leading into its ship. He also wondered why the happenings of the last few minutes had no apparent effect on it. The last worried him just a little bit. *********************************************************************** Lyta drying off after her shower, asked, "What's bothering you G'Kar?" "What happened out there?" "They were going to kill you, mommy and the ambassador," said Maya. "She is correct, G'Kar. The general and his aides set it up. I just set them up," replied Lyta. "I suppose they will conduct an investigation?" he asked. "They will and they will find out that a coup was averted. They won't care why the general died. It will be assumed that one of his co-conspirators had a change of heart. There is no reason for them to suspect, I was responsible, or involved," said Lyta. *********************************************************************** An hour later a ground car that was obviously meant for VIPs pulled up under G'Kar's ship. Two civilian's got out and waited alongside it. The stairway was lowered and Lyta went down to meet the men. She had already met the ambassador, the other was a stranger, his aide as she learned. She, G'Kar and Maya were to be taken to meet the inner circle of the presidents council. The stairway retracted as they got in the vehicle. The trip to the council chambers only took thirty minutes. Having an escort cleared away traffic. Lyta let G'Kar use the translation orb to explain why they were here and what they wanted. She and Maya sat listening, saying nothing. It took a bit of explaining the relationship between her and the Narn. The council relaxed after she and Maya were explained. Lyta and G'Kar learned that the general and his co-conspirators had been suspected for some time. The fiasco at the stadium had allowed internal security to obtain the leads necessary to squelch the coup. The president expressed regret that it had occurred during Lyta's meeting with Ambassador Hental. *********************************************************************** The meeting with the president and his council resulted in Lyta, G'Kar and Maya having a very pleasant and fruitful stay on Glenthor. They departed promising that the Interstellar Alliance would be contacting the president within a short time. Upon reentering Hyperspace G'Kar transmitted an encrypted brief of their recent experience. This was answered by a whitestar arriving in orbit above Glenthor less than a month later with a preliminary diplomatic staff on board. Lyta's contributions to this success was never documented or acknowledged. Because of this, and due to her own efforts, Lyta's presence on the planet went unrecorded. G'Kar had managed to access some available records, but it had been a laborious task, due to the lack of data storage technology. He had also been able to have access to some religious leaders and with Lyta as interpreter had managed to get a better idea about the culture. Using Ambassador Hental as a front, Lyta had also bought a large farm and got involved in some other business dealings. These were to bear fruit in massive quantities in the years to come. She explained to G'Kar that this would be a nice place to settle down. End of E-1 From: "Aubrey W. Just then the captain felt a presence touch his mind. It was fleeting, then it was gone, but it had been real. Looking at the console screen the captain saw nothing, but his mind reeled under the assault of someone or something so powerful it almost caused him to lose consciousness. Looking at the operator, the captain's look asked the question. "It was there sir. It just vanished," responded the operator. "Did you feel that?" asked the captain, as his command chair communications system started to chirp rapidly from incoming calls. The console operator nodded. "Navigator, take us to the area where that blip was last seen," ordered the captain, "Communications, get headquarters on the horn." ****************************************************************************** "G'Kar? Do you have anything on sensors?" asked Lyta from the back portion of the ship. "No. Why?" "I am sensing people. Humans. Telepaths," replied Lyta. "Nothing is showing anywhere. Your senses are much more sensitive than the ship's scanners," replied the Narn. Concentrating hard, Lyta suddenly said, "It's a ship full of telepaths. It is Psi Corps and there are psi cops onboard." She immediately moved their ship from hyperspace to normal space. "That move should lose them," said Lyta. "We are so far away from anything, I can only sense us." G'Kar moved the ship away from the point where they had exited hyperspace. If the ship tried to find them, it would be much harder this way. ****************************************************************************** "Captain Fredericks. This had better be important," said the psi cop on his communications screen. You could compromise your location. The captain recounted his encounter with the ship they had detected, if that was what it was. The psi cop was obviously interested. "We will get back to you, shortly. Follow if possible, but don't try to intercept." "Are we in the area they disappeared from?" he asked the sensor console operator. "Yes sir. As near as we can compute, this is where they were when they vanished," replied the operator. "Navigator, hold this position until further notice," ordered the captain, going into his ready room. A few minutes later his head of intelligence joined him. He explained the situation to his friend. "What do you think, Brad?' he asked. "I think we stumbled onto something. It is impossible to determine what without more information. One thing is sure. It is important. All we can do is wait," replied his friend. They were just finishing their second cup of 'coffee' when the intercom chimed. "Go," said the captain. "Captain, it is headquarters," came the reply. "Patch it in here," he answered. The face on the communications screen was a different psi cop. "Mr. Bester. What can I do for you?" asked Fredericks. "I am sorry captain, but you are not to try intercepting the ship you detected. Send us a copy of your intercept records and go back to your normal routine. We will handle any further investigation," replied Bester. "Not to press a point, but why?" asked Fredericks. "If you insist. We believe, based on your report, that the ship may have a rogue named Lyta Alexander aboard. It isn't public record yet, but she is the leader of the 'Remember Byron' Movement. She is wanted, but she is too dangerous to be apprehended in a normal fashion. She presents an unacceptable danger to you and your crew," answered Bester. "With all due respect, Mr. Bester, we have two squadrons of fighters aboard this ship. We aren't exactly helpless," pointed out the captain. "You have your orders, Captain Fredericks. Make no mistake, Lyta Alexander is more dangerous than you can possibly imagine. Leave this to us. Headquarters out." With that the link was severed. "I think that was rather succinct, Bill," said his friend. "He didn't leave any wiggle room for interpretation." "Brad, just who the hell is Lyta Alexander?" asked Fredericks. "Pull it up on your monitor, Bill. I will get some files from my off line computer that aren't part of the regular Psi Corps database," replied Brad leaving the ready room. Ten minutes later Brad returned with a data crystal that he put into the communication system read/write unit. Between the two different data sources there was some interesting information on Ms. Alexander. "For my money, Bill, she is definitely in the don't mess with category," said his friend. "Remember, curiosity killed the cat." "I'm not a cat, Brad. I just find it hard to believe any telepath is so dangerous that he or she can't be caught or killed," replied Fredericks. "Bill, you have your marching orders. I have heard stories about Bester. People who cross him disappear. I think you should leave this alone," said his friend. "Your concern is noted, Brad," said Bill. Captain Fredericks kept going over all the data he had on the Alexander woman. It only caused him to pace his ready room with indecision. He decided to tour the ship and get it out of his system. Several hours later after walking at least half the passageways on the ship and eating a slow lunch, he couldn't get the Alexander woman and her situation out of his mind. Entering the bridge area, Captain ordered the navigator to jump to normal space. *********************************************************************** Several hours had passed since they had returned to normal space and G'Kar was just starting to feel confident that they were safe, when his scanners detected a jump point being formed at the extreme edge of their ranges. "Lyta, they didn't give up," said G'Kar. As Fredericks' ship entered normal space, Lyta became aware of them again. She was disappointed. She would have rather avoided a confrontation. It was apparent that someone somewhere didn't like her. Entering the pilot's cabin, she said, "Show me." G'Kar pointed at the edge of the screen. "I am shutting down all our power. Maybe they will miss us." *********************************************************************** With no power to its thrusters, G'Kar's ship began a slow tumble. Lyta used her telekinesis to cause the scanning beams of the mother ship and its fighters deflect away instead of returning to their source. If the Psi Corps ships saw anything, it would like a small meteoroid tumbling in space. During the search several of the fighters had passed within weapons range of their ship without detecting it. Less than twenty-four hours after he began his search, Captain Fredericks, not realizing how lucky he had been, called it quits and returned to hyperspace. G'Kar and Lyta waited another standard say before continuing on their way. She was thankful that their ruse had worked. They learned something while denying the enemy information. Hopefully they would not run afoul of another Psi Corps ship. Question was, what the hell was Psi Corps doing with something that size hiding in hyperspace and if they had one, did they have others? As soon as they reentered hyperspace, G'Kar sent an encrypted transmission to Minbar. *********************************************************************** Lyta dropped the ship out of hyperspace about four hundred million kilometers from the solar system's sun. The monitors immediately picked up transmissions from two planets located about a hundred-fifty million kilometers from their sun. One was orbiting thirty-two million kilometers farther away than the other. They maintained their distance from the planets while monitoring the broadcasts from them. "They don't seem to like each other, Lyta," noted G'Kar. "Just what we need, find ourselves in the middle of an interstellar war," came her reply. "Why can't we just leave, mommy?" inquired Maya. "She has got a good idea there," replied G'Kar. "I want to learn as much about these peoples as I can. We don't have to become involved. Besides, G'Kar, where is your spirit of adventure?" asked Lyta. "You and Maya may not be able to be hurt, but I am," he replied. "Mommy, why can't we be hurt?" asked Maya. "You and I are different, sweetheart. I will explain when you are older. You wouldn't understand now," answered her mother. They had been monitoring for a month and began to get an idea of what was transpiring between the parties involved. It was a simple war for territory, only between adjacent planets instead of countries. Lyta began moving them closer to the planet's orbits. It wouldn't be too long before they were detected. They would send someone to investigate the new intruder. Lyta used a short hyperspace hop to put their ship in orbit around the innermost planet. She chose an orbit that put her on the opposite side as the largest moon because it had an installation on it. On the surface of the planet there was chaos in the headquarters of the planetary defense force. The sudden appearance of the ship caused an irrational reaction. A small group of craft were launched from the moon base. The intent was to intercept them. Lyta dropped the ship into the atmosphere, at thirty kilometers above the surface she leveled the flight path out and began a close up survey of the surface, while monitoring the military channels and public broadcast signals. "Do you really think this is a wise course of action," asked G'Kar. "Don't know, but it will get the quickest response," replied Lyta. "Think they have anything that can reach us?" "We will learn shortly. Their military communications traffic went through the roof when they first detected us and when I dropped us to where we are now, it went even higher. They will try something very shortly, of that I am sure," she replied. Her statement to G'Kar was supported by the detection of a missile firing from somewhere below them on the surface. The missile was approaching at four times the speed of sound, but Lyta maintained course and altitude. At one kilometer she destroyed the missile engine. As the missile started to tumble it detonated with a twenty-kiloton yield. Due to their altitude the blast was minimal and the heat and radiation were deflected by the outer armor. "Lyta, there are more missiles on their way," noted G'Kar. As the missiles approached to within one kilometer, Lyta phased the ship into hyperspace and back as the missiles reached an altitude several kilometers above their position. From the ground tracking stations it appeared that the missiles had passed through the ship without exploding. "Well, we know how high they can shoot," commented Lyta. A moment later a very high power weapons laser from a ground site illuminated the ship, but was reflected away. "These aren't the friendliest people we have ever encountered, Lyta." "It doesn't make sense. We are obviously not from their sister planet and their weapons have proven ineffective, yet, they continue shooting at us." "Lyta, war never has to make sense. If logic prevailed, wars would be fewer and farther between." "I am going down for a closer look," she said, and the ship dropped like a broken elevator." Lyta leveled off at less than two kilometers and reduced speed to eleven hundred kilometers per hour. At that speed the ship was well past a point on the ground before an observer heard the sound. The military sent up fighter craft to intercept the ship, but the craft lost power and fell away before getting within missile range. Lyta opened communications trying to get any response. There was none. Even though she was monitoring many channels both military and civilian, she detected nothing that could be interpreted as communication directed at them. She elected for the direct approach. Flying over the planetary capital, she located the building that functioned as the center of government leadership on the planet and set the ship down on a very large patch of open ground directly in front of it. She landed with the ship facing the building. "Now we wait again, G'Kar." "I'll bet these natives aren't as friendly as those on Glenthor." "Not with me you won't," replied Lyta. It wasn't very long before helicopter type craft were circling overhead, above them were fixed wing craft like those that had tried to intercept them earlier. Shortly armored vehicles with wicked looking guns mounted on them arrived, followed by vehicles that had to be tanks and heavy weapons. "I don't like the looks of this Lyta!" "You sound worried G'Kar," she replied. "Ever wonder what would happen if you opened a jump point at ground level on a planet with an atmosphere?" "You wouldn't. Would you?" "So far we have done nothing to harm these people, in spite of them firing nuclear tipped missiles at us. We have tried to communicate with them and all we get is attacked. We obviously are far more advanced than their enemy, so what gives?" As Lyta finished talking, the ship rocked under the impact of heavy weapons. "Looks like you would have had a safe bet, G'Kar, even if you had given odds. "Mommy, I am afraid!" "Don't worry, sweetheart. Mommy won't let them hurt you," answered Lyta. "How about me. Will you let them hurt me?" asked G'Kar. "G'Kar!" said Lyta with a grimaced expression. The ship rocked again and again under the impacts of the shells from the heavy weapons. "Commander! Our fire has had no effect on the ship!" exclaimed the artillery officer to his commanding officer. "I can see that major. Is the heavy laser in position yet?" "Yes sir. It will be ready to fire within two minutes." "Good. As soon as you are ready, open fire." In the presidential operations center deep below the presidential office building located three kilometers from where Lyta had landed, the president was being advised of the status of events, even as he watched six different video feeds from the landing site. "Who authorized the attack on that ship," asked the president. "You weren't available, so the chairman of the joint-chiefs did sir," answered his aide. "They have just opened fire with the heavy laser, Mr. President. Scowling at his aide, "I can see that." "So far, Mr. President, none of our weapons has had any effect on the craft." "Doesn't that scare you just a bit, Jerl?" "No sir," his aide responded. "It scares me a lot." Looking at the video screens, the president, his aide and everyone else in the command center watched the powerful laser be reflected into the troops and vehicles to one side of the ship like it had been reflected off a large mirror. The results were immediate. Several vehicles carrying ammunition exploded and several dozen soldiers died either from direct exposure to the laser or as a result of the explosions. "Get me the site commander on the horn. If their weapons are as advanced as their armor, we could be in a lot of trouble." "I think we have seen all we need to see here, G'Kar. Let's go see what we can learn about the other planet." "You're driving, Lyta." "General Thal! Cease fire!" ordered the president. "Did you try to communicate with that ship, general?" "No sir. We proceeded according to our standard procedure for hostile unknown vessels, Mr. President. "What did they do that was hostile, general?" "Nothing, Mr. President." "You opened fire on their ship, even though they did nothing hostile. You didn't try to communicate with them? Why?" "There wasn't time, Mr. President." "I am listening to recorded transmissions from the aliens, general. They tried to communicate on most of our frequencies and were ignored. They tried for the last couple of hours, general and were ignored," reiterated the president. "Mr. President," said his aide, "The fighters are beginning a run on the ship." "General, call off the aerial attack!" exclaimed the president. "Sir," said Jerl, "The ship is lifting off." "General!" shouted the president, "You are relieved of command, effectively immediately!" On the display screens G'Kar's ship had indeed lifted off and was hovering at fifty meters from the ground as the fighter aircraft began firing missiles. Just before the first missile impacted G'Kar's ship seemed to fade out of existence. "Mr. President," said Jerl. "The ship, it's gone." On the screen the president observed two things in order. The ship vanished and the missiles that been fired at it began impacting amongst the troops and vehicles deployed around the landing site. Hundreds of troops were being killed by friendly fire. The president was furious. "Let's go see what kind of reception we get on the other planet," said Lyta, as they entered hyperspace. "What bothers me the most, G'Kar, is they didn't even try to respond to our efforts at communication. They were terrified of our ship. Almost irrationally afraid." "Maybe we will learn why, later," responded G'Kar. A few minutes later they reentered normal space in a high orbit over the planet farthest from the sun. Lyta began extensive monitoring of available signal transmissions and what data that could be derived from scans of the planet's surface. ****************************************************************************** The president convened an emergency staff meeting just after G'Kar's ship vanished. It had taken an hour to get the joint-chiefs and the heads of the military departments assembled. The civilian cabinet members took a little longer. After all the various parties had arrived, the president had edited videos of the events surrounding the arrival and departure of the alien ship. The alien transmissions were also played at appropriate times during the video presentation. Looking at the assembled personnel, he demanded, "What is wrong with this picture, people?" There was a long silence from his staff and advisors. "Why didn't we respond to their communications attempts?" "Well, Mr. President. We have been fooled before by our enemies. They come in saying they are coming in piece and then wreak as much destruction as possible before being destroyed," answered the general he had relieved of command. "I am aware of that. When was the last time one of them just sat and absorbed everything we could throw at them without being damaged?" "Never. Sir," replied the general. "Really. They maneuvered in a manner our pilots can't even dream of. I think even a retarded child would have realized these aliens couldn't have been from Slor. Their technology is obviously so advanced over ours, it isn't even funny. All you managed to do general was get almost a thousand troops killed by our own fire. You disobeyed a direct order to cease fire. You will be court-martialed for gross insubordination leading to slaughter of your troops." "Mr. President," asked his secretary of state, "Do you think there is any chance these aliens will return?" "I don't know, Kstel, I certainly hope so. It could give us a chance to end the conflict with Slor. Maybe their technology, could allow us to communicate more effectively with Slor, and maybe, just maybe... Let's hope they come back, and if they do, for God's sake, don't shoot first." The meeting lasted another two hours with protocols being reviewed and rewritten and plans for the next time the aliens appeared, if they ever did. ******************************************************************************* "We've been monitoring this world for two weeks now, Lyta," said G'Kar. "When do propose to go down and meet them?" "I've been studying the languages and reading their thoughts. They are reptilian and their viewpoints are bizarre when compared to those of other races we have encountered,' answered Lyta. "I am reptilian," G'Kar reminded her. "That's my point. We are familiar with other reptilian races and compared to those, this one is bizarre. When we get down there, you and Maya will stay out of sight in the ship. I'll do all the meetings until we know exactly what we are dealing with," she responded. "What seems so bizarre, Lyta?" "Well, these guys consider any being other being than themselves as food. You can see where that might make negotiation difficult. I am betting they want the other planet to use the natives for a food supply on the hoof." "What do we do if you can't reason with them?" "Call in the rangers and quarantine this planet. One whitestar should be able to do it. Then construct orbital mines to deny them space flight, but let's see how things pan out, first." "What happens if the IA and rangers refuse to get involved?" "I was reengineered for the purpose of annihilating entire races, specifically the Shadows and their minions, G'Kar. If necessary, this planet will become one very large graveyard," answered Lyta. Staring at her, G'Kar started down through the atmosphere. What served as a planetary capital had been thoroughly scanned and plotted out the first day they had arrived in orbit. Their attempts to communicate with the natives were successful and they had landing instructions and directions. It appeared that their landing spot was located at a commercial airport. G'Kar made the landing without incident. They waited for the local officials to arrive. ******************************************************************************** The officials arrived outside the ship in a ground car and Lyta went out to meet them. The alien was two meters tall and looked similar to a terran velociraptor. It eyed her hungrily, but she pretended to not notice. "Greetings," said Lyta, while watching the alien's body language and reading its surface thoughts. "Whom do I have the pleasure of addressing." "I am the assistant to the first minister. I am to accompany you to meet with him," answered the man, opening the vehicle door for Lyta. The trip took almost an hour. Evidently they had arrived during rush hour. The building she was taken to was imposing, only ten stories high, but the architecture was not quite like anything she had seen before. Having seen pictures of Narn buildings before the Centauri bombed the planet using mass drivers, she thought that G'Kar would appreciate its finer points. ******************************************************************************* "Ms. Alexander, we would love to make piece with Gohr, but they have destroyed every ship we have sent to their planet. We have made overtures using radio communications, but they simply won't negotiate with us," said the first minister. Lyta was remembering the reception she and G'Kar had received when she had landed a few weeks before. She was also scanning the first minister's mind and knew he was shading the truth considerably. "How many are in your party?" "Just my daughter and my traveling companion. We travel light," replied Lyta. "Your technology is considerably more advanced than ours. Is there any way we could obtain any of it?" [Give him credit for being direct and to the point.] "We can't, but the Interstellar Alliance is set up to do those type things," she answered. "What is the Interstellar Alliance?" "It is an alliance made up of hundreds of worlds who have formed a common commercial bond." "Sounds interesting. We will have to look into it. Is there any reason we can't look over your ship?" "I can't allow that," replied Lyta. "Really. We will have to discuss this. We have you." "Are you sure about that?" asked Lyta, eyeing the door. She sensed security guards on the other side, so she used her telekinetic abilities to cause the door to merge with the rest of the wall until there wasn't any door. The first minister signaled for his guards to arrest Lyta. There was much banging on the other side of the former door and the first minister looked at Lyta in puzzlement. "As I asked, who has who, first minister?" asked Lyta with a big grin on her face. Infuriated at her, the first minister started to move toward her and found he was frozen in place. He couldn't move. "Sit down," commanded Lyta. The man complied. He tried to fight it, but his body did what Lyta commanded. Without further hesitation Lyta performed a very deep scan on the first minister. She learned about the plans for Gohr and the population. She saw what had been planned for her and Maya and G'Kar. When she finished the first minister was very compliant with her wishes. He used his desk intercom and called off the security guards. He then ordered up a car and escort for him and Lyta. Lyta walked over to the former door and began returning it to its former condition. The first minister accompanied Lyta to the car and to G'Kar's ship. He left her at the bottom of the ship's stairway. Lyta entered the ship as the first minister and his escort departed. "How did it go?" asked G'Kar. "I learned what I needed to know. The IA and rangers are going to have to quarantine this planet. If they don't, I will have to destroy it. This race will need thousands of years of development before they are ready to be a part of any kind of interstellar organization," replied Lyta. "We need to inform the IA immediately and wait for a reply." G'Kar lifted off and they shifted to hyperspace as they passed through the upper atmosphere. Upon entering hyperspace Lyta opened a channel to Delenn at IA headquarters. Using the prearranged codes she sent the information they had collected about both planets, with comments about the planet they had just left. All they could now was wait for a response. "G'Kar, let's go back to the first planet. I think I understand their actions toward us. I would probably have responded much the same way," said Lyta. ******************************************************************************* At home in his bed the first minister, having just fell asleep, awoke screaming. It was the first of what would be horrendous nightmares that would haunt him every time he went to sleep for the rest of his life. It was a gift from Lyta, although he would never know that. ******************************************************************************** Their second visit went much differently. It seemed the president couldn't apologize enough, even though Lyta assured him she understood why they responded the way they had. She and G'Kar stayed there for a month. G'Kar got to study their social and religious customs and Lyta got to meet with political and commercial leaders. G'Kar had already sent a recommendation that the IA offer the planet membership in the organization. Lyta had explained to Delenn that she wanted any reference to her expunged from the records of her and G'Kar's efforts. The IA, Delenn explained, would quarantine the other planet. A whitestar with negotiators aboard, using a hyperspace buoy that G'Kar had placed, arrived as G'Kar and Lyta were preparing to leave. G'Kar passed records of all that he had learned during their stay to them and departed the solar system. *********************************************************************** CHECK MAYA'S part *********************************************************************** It had been just over twelve months since G'Kar and Lyta and Maya departed Minbar and the time in hyperspace was going slowly. Lyta was piloting the ship and was way off beacon. G'Kar wondered where they were going, since they had to be well out of IA space. If anything happened to Lyta he was sol. Lyta, meantime, was teaching Maya how to block scans and how to scan. G'Kar was the helpful subject of this training. "I appreciate you helping me with Maya's training G'Kar. It will make it easier for her to fit in with normals," said Lyta. "It isn't what I expected when I said we would meet something exciting," replied G'Kar. "However, it is different." Without warning, Lyta dropped the ship into normal space. G'Kar and Lyta could see flashing lights. Whatever was causing the lights was still out of the ship's sensor range, which meant they must be very distant. "It's a firefight, G'Kar. There are humans engaged with someone else," said Lyta her voice trailing off as she began concentrating. "Drakh," she said in a very low voice. As quickly as they had entered normal space they reentered hyperspace. Lyta was all concentration. She mumbled, "G'Kar. Get to the back of the ship and take Maya with you. Seal the pilot's cabin off." G'Kar exited the pilot's cabin and sealed the door. He gathered up Maya from where she was playing and took her to the center compartment of the ship and sealed them in. "It's okay Maya. Your mommy has some business to deal with," said G'Kar in his best neutral voice." Maya gave him a look that told him she knew better. He had thought for a moment that he could keep anything from her, fat chance. ****************************************************************** End of E-2 From: "Aubrey W. Less than ten seconds later she had what she needed and was back in hyperspace, hopefully, before either party to the battle realized anything had been there. The next time she dropped the ship into normal space the pilot cabin was awash in blinding white light and she was virtually on top of a Drakh cruiser. Using the information that she had stripped from the Drakh minds, she caused the safety controls on the cruiser's power plant to dissolve and set a massive reactor overload into progress. Lyta's ship vanished again barely escaping the explosion that destroyed the Drakh cruiser. It happened so quickly, the Drakh never even issued an alarm. She had destroyed one of the four attacking Drakh ships. If what she believed was true, destroying the mother ships rendered the Drakh fighters useless. Two more times Lyta repeated the exercise and twice more Drakh cruisers were quickly destroyed. The last time she dropped from hyperspace, the EA ship was finishing cutting the remaining cruiser to pieces. **************************************************************************** Onboard the first of the new EA Warlock class destroyers, EAS ZEUS, Captain Susan Ivonava was assessing her tactical situation. She was confronted with four very large ships that weren't listed in her ship's data banks. Accompanying the ships were at least three hundred fighters. She didn't like this at all. Her ship had the latest technology available to the EA, but it had never been tested in real combat. Theoretically it could do wonders, but these cruiser size ships and their fighters weren't theoretical. They were very real and very nasty looking. Susan remembered what she had done against EA advanced destroyers with an outnumbered whitestar battle group. She didn't give herself and her ship a snowball's chance in hell, on a hot summer day. As they closed, it became obvious there would not be any negotiation. The cruisers and their fighters were powering up their weapons arrays. She knew all communications were being jammed, but she was transmitting anyway, however, she didn't hold much hope that anyone would ever receive it. She had only fifty fighters aboard and she launched them. She knew she was sending her pilots on a suicide mission, but there was no choice. Whoever they were, they meant business and didn't waste any time. As soon as they came within range the fighters started firing. The cruisers held back, just out of firing range. While the individual fighters couldn't do much damage alone, they were attacking in groupings of two to six at a time. Susan's ship absorbed the punishment without much damage being done at first, but she knew that there was a limit as to how much power it could absorb and how fast its repair systems could operate. Unfortunately her ship wasn't equipped with auto-repair systems like those installed in the whitestars. The groupings of the fighters also meant that most of them survived their attack runs. The fighter attacks were so fierce that the cruisers moved in closer, and added their superior firepower to that of the fighters. Under the added firepower of the cruisers, the ZEUS was being rocked to her keel. Damage reports were coming in from all areas of the ship. While the damage reported was minor that would change very soon. Susan's ship had destroyed at least fifty fighters, but almost a third of her secondary weapons were disabled and the fighters were concentrating on the ship's now unprotected areas. The battering her ship was suffering was getting worse as the cruisers moved in closer. There were reports of casualties coming in from all areas of the ship, including deaths. Two areas had suffered hull breaches. Some of the attacking fighters were making suicide runs on her ship, causing massive damage to the outer hull areas. Watching the tactical projection on her forward display screens, Susan saw what looked like a ship appear almost in the center of the firefight. She blinked several times and looked again, but it wasn't there anymore. At the same she felt an overwhelming sense of being scanned. It lasted only a moment and she passed it off as her overactive imagination. Susan was asking about the status of her fighters, when one of the cruisers exploded in a brilliant flash of light and debris. "Captain, we didn't hit that ship yet," reported her Ships Weapons' Officer(SWO). Susan noticed that a large number of fighters became uncoordinated and started flying erratically when the cruiser was destroyed. "Move us in closer to the nearest cruiser and concentrate all our fire on it! NOW!" ordered Susan. The ZEUS moving quickly for such a large ship closed on the Drakh cruiser and concentrated all its fire on it. As her ship maneuvered, Susan saw a second cruiser explode and less than a minute later the third was gone. By then, the ZEUS was tearing the remaining cruiser to shreds. With the destruction of the last Drakh cruiser the remaining fighters became inoperative. "Damage reports and repair estimates as soon as they can be submitted," Susan ordered her engineering officer. "We are hurt pretty badly and it would be best if we get the hell out of here before we encounter any of their friends. Get our fighters back aboard, refueled, rearmed and relaunched." Amazingly Susan had lost only ten of her fighters. She thanked whatever gods had smiled on them. **************************************************************** In his quarters the telepath, Charles Wayne, Charlie to his friends, who had been assigned to the ZEUS was fuming. He was restricted to his quarters and the ship was getting hell beat out of her. He realized what it was like to be in a bad situation and totally helpless. He didn't like it at all. ***************************************************************** It had begun when he first reported aboard and been introduced to the captain, one Susan Ivonava. Possibly the hardest nosed and coldest person he had ever met. She made Mr. Bester seem absolutely toasty by comparison. When he had reported aboard Captain Ivonava wasn't available, so the XO had seen to his cabin assignment. Unfortunately he had been delayed and barely got onboard before the ZEUS had departed on a yearlong operations assignment. He had heard tales about the captain's hatred of Psi Corps and its personnel, but had discounted them as exaggerated stories. Later, when he met her, he learned, they were not exaggerations. At dinner in the wardroom his second day aboard the ZEUS, Charles met the famous captain and immediately regretted it. A number of officers and the captain were seated and exchanging small talk between bites of food. When Charles walked into the room, the small talk stopped and silence ensued. "Who are you?" Inquired the captain. "I am Charles Wayne. I have been assigned to the ship as its resident telepath for the deployment," answered Charles. "Your psi cop uniform makes that obvious. Did you ask for this assignment, Mr. Wayne?" asked Susan in a tone that could cut up granite blocks. Her hatred hit him like a brick in the face. Instinctively he knew he was going to regret this assignment and Susan didn't disappoint him. He hadn't been expecting anything like this. Mr. Bester must really hate him. "No," answered Wayne. "Mr. Wayne. When you address me, it will be, yes captain, yes ma'am, or no captain, no ma'am! Is that clear?" Snapped Susan. Taken aback by the viciousness of her words, Wayne replied, "Yes ma'am." "Mr. Wayne, while you are aboard this ship, you are restricted to your quarters. You will take your meals there. You will be allowed two hours a day in the exercise room under guard. You are not allowed access to any other areas of this ship. If you wish to send out communications, they will go through me before transmission. You will not be allowed to meet or mix with any of the crew, and you will refrain from scanning anyone, unless I specifically authorize it. If you attempt to scan me or any member of this crew, I will have you dumped out an airlock. Do you understand all of what I just said?" snapped Susan. "Captain, you can't do that. I have duties to perform," replied Charles. "I have determined you can do your job from your cabin, and don't ever again tell me what I can or can't do on my ship. If you do you will spend this entire trip in the brig. One more word Mr. Wayne, and you will find yourself in the brig. Nod if you understand me," She snapped again. Charles nodded. "Security send two guards to the wardroom," said Susan into her link. When the security men arrived, they were instructed to escort Mr. Wayne to his cabin and lock him in. All Charles could think of was how to repay Bester for this assignment. He might as well be in prison. He wondered what he had done to deserve this. ****************************************************************** The ship had probably been to several EA colonies and IA planets, but he had no way of knowing. He was totally isolated from the ship and crew except for getting his meals and exercise. The captain had made sure that his guards knew what would happen to them if they even passed the time of day with him. For him the past year had been worse than a prison sentence. Even a prisoner in solitary confinement could occasionally talk to a guard. He couldn't even do that. ****************************************************************** The attack had apparently stopped, and since he was still alive, Captain Ivonava had apparently won. He supposed being a virtual prisoner was better than being dead. He had felt a very powerful mind touch his during the fight, but it was so brief and light, he doubted it was more than his imagination. ****************************************************************** Without warning a small civilian ship appeared on Susan's tactical display. "Where hell did that come from?" Susan asked to the bridge crew in general. "It just appeared, Captain," answered her (TAO), Tactical Operations Officer. The ship hailed the ZEUS. "G'Kar? What the hell are you doing here?" asked Ivonava. "Hello, Captain," came his pleasant reply. "I see we weren't too late. The outside of your ship looks like a fleet used it for target practice. Some of the damage looks to be very bad. We can escort you to the nearest EA outpost if you wish." Susan almost fell out of her seat from uncontrolled laughter. Tears were streaming down her face. "G'Kar," she said trying not to choke on her words, "You have one hell of a sense of humor. Do you see those drifting ships out there?" "Of course. Who do you think is responsible for most of them," he replied. "They didn't just quit." Humoring the Narn, "Okay G'Kar. Tell me how you did it?" "I didn't do it." Looking off screen, "You have a psi cop on board." It was a statement, not a question. "How did you know?" "I didn't," replied G'Kar. "If that ship of yours will fit, why don't you put it into our hanger bay? I'll buy you dinner," said Susan. In his quarters, Charles again felt the presence of another telepath. This time it wasn't a light touch. It was a probe and he put up his defenses. His defenses were useless, whoever it was simply went through them like nothing was there. Charles awoke about thirty minutes later with no memory of the scan. Looking around he became aware that he wasn't in his stateroom. He was in isolation in the brig, wondering how the hell he had gotten there. *********************************************************** On the bridge Susan had felt the lightest touch of a another mind. It was so light she almost missed it. "Security, Get Wayne up her on the double!" exclaimed Susan. "I am going to space that son of a bitch." "Captain," inquired the TAO, "What has he done?" "He tried to scan me." "Captain. Mr. Wayne is locked in his quarters almost all the way aft. I thought a telepath needed line of sight, for a scan?" "Normally, they do, but I can feel a scan, and there isn't another telepath out here, unless we have a rogue or undercover agent on board. If we do, when I find him, he is dead," replied Susan. **************************************************************** Fortunately for G'Kar, the attackers had concentrated on the Zeus's weapons and engines hoping for a quick kill. The Launch bays and hanger bay were undamaged. He maneuvered his ship inside and cut thrusters. A gentle bump told him he was on the deck. On her way to greet G'Kar, Susan met the security guards who were bringing her the telepath. They dropped the unconscious telepath at her feet. "What did you do to him?" she inquired. "Nothing, captain. He was like this when we opened his cabin door," replied one of the guards. Susan frowned. How could he have attempted to scan her in this state. If he couldn't, the alternative worried the hell out of her. "Take him to the brig and isolate him," she ordered, then continued on her way to meet G'Kar. G'Kar walked off his ship and greeted Susan. "Hello, Captain Ivonava, said G'Kar, grinning broadly. "You had a nice looking ship before today. You should learn to take better care of your toys." "I do my best, G'Kar," she replied. "What are you doing out here alone?" "I am not alone. I have two traveling companions." "Why haven't they debarked?" "One of them is wanted by the Earth government as a terrorist," answered G'Kar. "What about the other one?" "She isn't wanted, yet." "Who are they?" "One is a rogue telepath. The other isn't known to Psi Corps yet." "Oh? That may explain some things." "Captain, If they come aboard your ship, you will be required to arrest them." From inside the ship, Susan heard a small voice say, "Mommy, you said I could meet her." Sitting inside G'Kar's ship, Lyta debated whether to go meet Ivonava. They had been on the same side in two wars, but this was different. Her presence could ruin Susan's career, if it got back that she hadn't arrested Lyta when she had the chance. Edgar's Industries via a senator had gotten her released from Babylon 5's brig, but the warrants were still in effect. During the past year she had steered clear of any contact with any EA people. That was at an end. "Bring him or her out G'Kar. If you don't, I'll have my security people do it," said Susan. "Captain. That would be a very bad mistake," replied G'Kar in a no nonsense solemn voice. "Why?" asked Susan. "Who do you think destroyed those Drakh cruisers?" replied G'Kar. Susan was confused. "If that is true, everyone on this ship owes them their life." Continuing, "I am damned sure not going to arrest anyone who just pulled my ass out of the sling." Susan looked at the door of G'Kar's ship and saw a very small child. The little girl looked very familiar. The flaming red hair reminded her of someone she hadn't seen since the middle of the civil war. Looking closely, now, she could see the mother's face in the daughter. Looking at G'Kar, she whispered, "Is it Lyta?" G'Kar nodded. For Susan that explained everything. Lyta was so powerful she didn't need line of sight to scan someone. However, the touch she felt had reminded her of a small feather landing in your hand. "Lyta! I know you are in there!" said an excited Susan. The tall redhead appeared in the doorway and took her daughter's hand. "Susan. This could ruin your career," said Lyta. Susan felt a light touch on her mind and looked at Lyta with surprise. "Maya! Don't do that," Lyta admonished her daughter. "I almost couldn't feel that, Lyta," said Susan. "I am teaching Maya how to use her talents. Since we have been in space for so long, she only has me and G'Kar to practice with," responded Lyta. "She has never had another non-telepath, to work with. She won't do it again." "No harm done. I am very sensitive to scans. She is very good. How old is she?" asked Susan. "Just over a year," responded Lyta. "You have a psi cop on board." "Don't worry about him. He is locked up in the brig in solitary confinement." Susan went on to describe Wayne's treatment aboard the ZEUS. Lyta was appalled, but said nothing. Susan explained that her belief was the only good psi cop was a dead one. "Maya's father was a former psi cop," said Lyta. "He was also a leader of the rogue telepath movement. I inherited that responsibility after his death. Your psi cop is one of our deep undercover agents."" "How do you know?" "I scanned him before we came aboard. That is why he was unconscious when your men found him," said Lyta. The thought of what she had done began to sink into Susan's mind. She felt very small standing in front of Lyta. "You will have to continue to treat him as you have for the first part of your patrol. If you suddenly change, it will cause people to wonder what is going on. Don't worry, it is for his benefit. This patrol and what has happened to him will cement his position of trust within the corps." Susan nodded agreement. Lyta looked at Susan and erased their conversation from the security team's memory. They would remember girl talk that never occurred. "You do that so easily." "I don't like it, but it must be done," replied Lyta. Susan noticed that Maya had taken her hand. "I am pleased to meet you, Maya," said Susan, picking the youngster up and giving her a kiss on the cheek. "Your mommy and I are friends from years ago." Maya returned the hug and snuggled against Susan's neck. "She hasn't had her nap today," said Lyta. "She isn't used to this much excitement." Susan turned and started to walk away carrying the little girl on her shoulder. "Let's retire to my mess. We can relax and talk privately." *********************************************************** In her private mess, Susan had her steward put Maya to sleep on her bed. It was time for lunch, so Susan had them served while they talked. "Somehow, Lyta, I never figured you as the mother type," said Susan. "Neither did I, Susan. I hadn't had sex for years before Byron came into my life. I didn't think, with all the changes the Vorlons made to me, I could get pregnant with anyone, human or otherwise. Surprise!" replied Lyta. "Do you regret it? After all being a mom puts a crimp in your style." "Believe it or not she has adjusted admirably," chimed in G'Kar. "Where was she born," inquired Susan. "In the toilet on G'Kar's ship, in space," replied Lyta. Wide-eyed, Susan said, "You're kidding." "No," said G'Kar, "she isn't. She delivered alone." "Lyta. You give "walk on the wild side" a whole new meaning," commented Susan. Shifting subjects, she asked, "Tell me about the telepath conflict?" Lyta proceeded to tell both Susan and G'Kar about the impending telepath war and how she came to be its leader. An hour later Lyta, Susan and G'Kar were relaxing over real coffee and Susan was reviewing the damage reports and casualties lists. "I am going to visit my people in sickbay, you are welcome to come," said Susan. Lyta and G'Kar agreed without hesitation. "You may learn even more about Lyta before this is over, Susan," commented G'Kar. Susan looked questioningly at Lyta, who only shrugged her shoulders and smiled. Susan's crew numbered over a thousand personnel and officers total. About a fifth of her crew had been injured and she had lost ten crewmen and an officer to the hull breaches. She was not looking forward to the letters to families she was going to have to write. This was one part of being a commanding officer that every decent commander dreaded. Parents, spouses, children, they would all want explanations, comforting and understanding. Remembering her feelings when she learned of her brother's death during the Earth-Minbar war, she at least had the knowledge that his death wasn't a wasted life. The same couldn't be said for today's attack. Then she wondered if it really made a difference. While the manner of death was important for the survivors' closure, the result was the same for the deceased. ****************************************************************** Sickbay was filled with crewmen and officers sporting a variety of injuries, everything from broken arms to life threatening injuries. The ship's doctors and their assists were desperately trying to separate the injured according to seriousness. It was into this chaos that Lyta and G'Kar followed Captain Ivonava. As Susan and G'Kar stopped to talk to a doctor, Lyta moved toward those whose injuries were severe enough to be fatal without immediate attention. Those with no hope had been moved aside and sedated. It was these that got Lyta's immediate attention. She was moving from one to another, slowly. The doctor, Susan's Chief Medical Officer, CMO, noticed her and said, "I am sorry Captain, but there is nothing we can do for them. They are too badly injured. We have sedated them to relive their pain." Susan started to say something to Lyta, but Lyta ignored her and continued to minister to them. Susan stepped over to Lyta and put a hand on her left arm. Lyta turned to face her and Susan almost jumped back in surprise. Lyta's eyes were brilliant white lights. She turned back to the injured crewman and continued whatever it was she had been doing. Several doctor's and medical assistants had seen Lyta's eyes and showed fear on their faces, but immediately went back to work on the casualties. Lyta had apparently finished with the mortally wounded and walked over to several bodies that had been covered with sheets. She moved from one to another and stopped at one that had just been brought in. This one had just been pulled from a compartment that had decompressed to space without warning after the firefight was over. It was a female and she had only been dead for a few minutes. Pulling the sheet back from the corpse, she went to work. Remembering Lorien's words, she concentrated with everything she possessed and found an echo of the dead crewman's personality and mind. This woman had been killed by exposure to hard vacuum and intense cold, but her physical body had not been too badly damaged. She could be pulled back from the abyss of death and Lyta proceeded to do just that. One of the doctors moved to Lyta's side and demanded, "Just what do you think you are doing." Lyta turned slowly and the doctor, who had just arrived in sickbay, screamed when she saw Lyta's eyes. Captain Ivonava, G'Kar and the CMO briefing her turned as one to see what had happened. It was then that they and everyone else saw what had been a corpse trying to sit up on its gurney. Lyta, with the glow fading from her eyes, turned to Susan and said, "I am sorry, Susan. I could only save this one. The others were too badly damaged." Lyta looked like she had been drained of everything. She was very pale and looked to be very tired. "I need to rest, Susan," Lyta said in a whisper. She was beginning to buckle at the knees. G'Kar moved quickly and grabbed her before she could collapse. A medical assistant pushed a chair toward them and G'Kar lowered Lyta into it. He stood next to her and held her shoulder. >From all appearances, Lyta was completely exhausted. "Susan," said Lyta in a very weary voice. I need the names of everyone in this room. I need to see them before they talk to anyone outside this room." Pausing, then continuing, "G'Kar, help me get to that office." G'Kar looked at Susan, who nodded consent, then helped Lyta walk across the sickbay room to an adjoining office. Looking at her CMO, Susan said, "I am sorry, Barbara, but Lyta can't allow you and your staff to remember what you've seen here. She is going to remove the memories and replace them. After she is finished you will never remember any of this. Quite possibly, neither will me nor G'Kar." Her CMO looked disappointed, but agreed. "Captain. I would give almost anything to remember this. To know what can be," she replied wistfully. It only took Lyta a few minutes to replace the memories of what she had done with new ones. The new memories were easy to remove. It became more difficult after the mind transferred recent memories into the areas that stored permanent memories. As they finally left sickbay, Susan asked Lyta, "How many of my memories do you plan to trash?" "I might ask the same question," commented G'Kar. He had many memories of the past year. He wondered which of them were real or what Lyta had implanted. "What are they going to remember Lyta?" asked Susan. "They will remember someone yelling to them that they had made a mistake. One of the bodies was still alive. It is very simple and close enough to the truth. What they actually saw will be remembered as a dream generated by extreme stress," replied Lyta. "I have some work to do that can't be put off any longer," said Susan. "I will send someone to my mess, who can give you a tour of the ship and get you set up with quarters. You'll have to find your own way back to the mess." "I have it covered, Susan," Lyta said with humor once more evident in her tone. "Come on, G'Kar. I am hungry again and Maya is awake." G'Kar was surprised at how easy it had been to adjust to Lyta's idiosyncrasies. Apparently, bringing people from the dead generated an appetite. Again, he wondered how much of this was her handiwork. It was becoming evident that Lyta was changing, radically. She was acting more like a 'first one' everyday. She could be compassionate one moment and absolutely ruthless the next. She had destroyed the Drakh warships, and she had done it in a manner that could be explained as nothing out of the ordinary. She had pulled the crewman back from being dead, and it could be explained as a misdiagnosis. For the first time in their travels, G'Kar began to understand just how dangerous Lyta could be. Piss her off and, if she thought about it, you were history. However, he wasn't anymore afraid of her than he had been of Kosh, in fact even less afraid. End of E3 From: "Aubrey W. As he had been instructed, Lyta was put into the flag officer's quarters and G'Kar in the adjutant's quarters. They were given a tour of most of the ship, only missing areas that had been damaged and some engineering spaces and weapons areas that were restricted. At Lyta's request, the young supply officer dropped them off at the bridge elevator. Susan wasn't on the bridge when Lyta and G'Kar arrived. She was in her ready room going over damage reports with the Damage Control Officer,(DCO). The DCO was explaining the extent of the hull breaches and other very serious damage to the outer hull areas. The Ship's Weapons Officer, (SWO), was waiting his turn to explain his concerns. On the bridge Lyta was asking the Officer of the Deck (OOD) if they had found any life pods in the debris. She was informed that they had found three, but had detected no life signs. Susan came on the bridge some time later and found Lyta and G'Kar there. They were whispering to one another about something. Susan walked over to them and inquired about what was so hush-hush. Lyta told her they needed to talk, alone. Leaving G'Kar on the bridge, Lyta and Susan entered her ready room. The officers who had been briefing her were gone. "I will cut to the chase about two items, Susan. First, G'Kar and I need to go check out some life pods your people found amongst the wreckage of the cruiser you destroyed. Your sensors don't show any life forms, but I can feel the presence of several Drakh in them," said Lyta. "And what is the second?" asked Susan. "That is rather touchy and dangerous to you. It will ruin your life and your career," replied her friend. Alarmed, but not showing it, Susan asked, "What could ruin my life and my career?" "Susan, I have known since I uncovered Talia as a Psi Corps plant, that you were a latent telepath. That's old news between us. The problem is that you have a psi cop on board." "Lyta. He has been locked up for this entire patrol, and since he is one of yours, I doubt he would expose me in any event." "I am not talking about him. You have a mole on board, and somehow he has figured out your secret. He is dreaming of what his reward is going to be for exposing and arresting you." "Can you rework his memories to remove the information?" "No. The amount of reworking will leave large gaps and other traces that Bester and his people can find. It would put you and your command under a spotlight and a Psi Corps microscope." "How should I handle it?" asked Susan. "You don't. I do," said Lyta. "How?" "He will commit suicide in his thoroughly locked living quarters with a ppg that I have provided for him." "I can't allow that, Lyta," Susan stated matter-of-factly. "That's why you will not remember any part of this conversation. When he is found you will be on the bridge. Besides, you must know by now, I can do, pretty much, whatever I want." Susan was angry at what she had been told, even if it was true. ***************************************************************** "Why do you need to check out the pods Lyta?" Asked Susan. "I can detect life signs that your ship's sensors can't," replied her friend. "If they are there, I want every shred of information they have. I will bring the bodies back so they can be examined." "I take it, they won't be alive then?" "No. It is too dangerous," replied Lyta. ************************************************************* Lyta and G'Kar were approaching the location of the life pods. For Lyta the life signs were very strong now. She was able to reach deep into the sleeping minds to begin reading their thoughts. It was nice of them to leave themselves so open to be scanned. She was sure that if they had known a telepath of her caliber was in the area, they would have died with their ship, and considering she was the only telepath of her caliber, it was an understandable error on the part of the Drakh. As it was, they had never expected to be detected. If not for her presence, they would have succeeded. *********************************************************************** Onboard the ZEUS, locked in his cabin, the psi cop mole was taking a ppg from the drawer of his dresser and fitting a power cap into it. Inside his mind, his life was a disaster. He had betrayed his assignment. The corps would not be forgiving. Unable to face his shame he had tears running down his face. There was only one way to escape the shame and retribution Bester would heap upon him. With hands shaking so badly he almost dropped the handgun, he raised it and pointed it at the side of his head. For a moment he felt the cold metal on the flesh of his right ear. Closing his tear filled eyes he squeezed the trigger, then nothing. ***************************************************************** Lyta was busy scanning the sleeping Drakh when she detected the death of the Psi Corps mole. She noted it with no feeling whatsoever. She had some luck. One of the Drakh was a senior engineer on his ship. The others were lower level non decision-making types. The engineer gave up much information on Drakh ship types, power plants and a load of other data. She learned some tactics, Drakh supply systems, and a little about upcoming Drakh plans. It had been a worthwhile effort. With the lifepods and their now dead cargo in tow, She and G'Kar returned to the ZEUS. ***************************************************************** Lyta, Maya and G'Kar shared a table with the officers' in the wardroom at supper that night. One of the topics of discussion was the suicide of a junior communications department officer. It seems that he had been a little odd, but that wasn't new for communications types, especially those assigned to the intelligence division. "They had to cut the door off the hinges," said one junior officer from the other end of the table. "I understand he didn't leave a note or anything," said another. "The guy I know in security said it was a real mess. Fried brains all over the bulkhead," said a third. "Fellows, is this really good dinner conversation?" asked a lieutenant, indicating Lyta and Maya. "Don't mind us, lieutenant. I have seen far worse, and my daughter has seen some of those scenes in my mind," interjected Lyta. They others at the table all turned to look at her. All had puzzled looks on their faces. "I am a telepath as is my daughter," said Lyta. "You aren't with Psi Corps, are you?" asked another junior ensign. "No. We don't see eye-to-eye," replied Lyta. "Aren't you afraid of being arrested?" asked another. "Captain Ivonava has your psi cop locked up, and I will depart before we get to an EA outpost. Susan and I are old friends. We have been through a couple of wars together," replied Lyta. "Didn't you have something to do with the destruction of at least three of those ships we fought today," inquired the lieutenant. "Not even in your wildest dreams. What do you think I am, anyway? Being a telepath doesn't make you God," answered Lyta. "Believe me, I am not God." "Could have fooled me," said G'Kar under his breath. Lyta shot him a withering look. He cringed waiting for the hammer to fall, and when it didn't, he looked to see Lyta laughing. "G'Kar is a Narn, and they have a freaky sense of humor," laughed Lyta. The conversation returned to the events of earlier that day. Lyta, Maya and G'Kar took their leave and retired to Lyta's cabin. *********************************************************************** Lyta was sitting in a chair, her eyes closed and apparently concentrating on something. G'Kar was playing a game with Maya. Maya was getting tired and cranky as toddlers are known to do. G'Kar helped her undress and ran her bathwater for her. He sat just outside the head(bathroom) while Maya played at taking her bath. Realizing what was happening, Lyta opened her eyes and went to help Maya finish her bath. "They haven't been totally truthful, G'Kar. The ship is more badly damaged than we have been led to believe," said Lyta. "Elaborate," replied G'Kar. "One of the hull breaches was in a space that houses power distribution and control. They took a hit after the breach that caused a very large power spike. Their jump engines are badly damaged as a result. They can't make a hyperspace jump. If the Drakh send more ships to discover why these are no longer responding, Susan and her ship are sitting ducks. The damage is too extensive to be repaired by ship's force," she answered. "What can we do about it?" asked G'Kar. "I can get them home, but it will force me to reveal more than I wanted," answered Lyta, pausing. "G'Kar, you have helped me more than you will ever know, but you should know that I am now realizing some of my talents at their full capacity. Do we really want them to know what I can do?" "It's your call, Lyta," answered G'Kar. "You must follow your heart, whatever the result, knowing that EA would like to see you dead." Continuing, he asked, "How are you going to approach Captain Ivonava about the situation?" "Straight ahead with the truth. She will understand that. I hope. She is asleep now. I will approach her first thing in the morning. Besides it's time we got some sleep," she said as she tucked Maya into bed. *********************************************************************** Lyta sensed Ivonava's awakening and knocked on the door of her cabin(stateroom). Susan's steward let her in and served her coffee while Ivonava finished her shower. A few minutes later Susan appeared looking smart in a fresh uniform. "What's on your mind Lyta?" asked Susan. "Sometimes being a telepath is a curse. You have to keep your mental shields up at all times to prevent overhearing private conversations or hearing very strong thoughts, worries and fears," replied her friend. "Give it to me straight up, Lyta." "The damage to your ship is much more serious than you know," answered Lyta. Susan's eyes narrowed, "Just what the hell are you talking about?" "Your chief engineer and his specialists have reevaluated the damage to your jump engines and power distribution systems. Your jump engines are beyond ship's force repair and the power distribution systems are unable to supply power to half of the weapons systems that weren't actually shot all to hell yesterday," responded Lyta. "I haven't seen reports about what you say. Are you scanning my crew!" "Get off the high horse, Susan," responded an irate Lyta. "Your engineers and weapons technicians were discussing these things very late last night. They are scared out of their wits about what will happen, if more Drakh ships show up, looking for those we destroyed. Their fear is so strong I could have sensed them clear across the quadrant." Susan sat down at the table and spoke into her link, " Bridge, this is the captain. Notify the XO and all department heads I want to see them in my mess in fifteen minutes, captain out." Looking across the table, Susan said, "Why don't you get Maya and join me for breakfast. I am sure you should be at this meeting." *********************************************************************** Sitting at the captain's table Lyta started the meeting with a question, "Have you gathered all of the material you want from the debris field outside?" Looking at her, Susan asked, "Why?" "As soon as you get finished, I am going to reduce all of the remaining debris to dust. The Drakh will never be able to even identify it as the remains of their ships. It may buy us some badly needed time," responded Lyta. The various department heads and specialty officers from engineering and weapons gave Captain Ivonava a very thorough updated briefing about their physical status. It was even bleaker than Lyta had indicated. They were alone, badly crippled, barely fifty percent on weapons capability, of those still functioning, and communications with anyone through hyperspace was out of the question. They couldn't tell anyone about their situation, nor call for help. *************************************************************************** Three hours later Lyta was notified that debris recovery had been completed and they were moving away from the area at best speed. Lyta lay down on her bed and nestled Maya to her side. Lyta felt Maya's mind touch hers and she began to send her senses beyond the ship. She found all the debris down to the smallest pieces and began to concentrate. In the debris field the pieces began to break down into particles as fine as talcum powder. Less than an hour later, there was nothing to indicate that there had ever been a pitched battle or ships in the area, except some scattered energy readings. On the bridge the sensor operators couldn't believe what was being shown on their displays. It seemed like the pieces were just ceasing to exist. ****************************************************************** The next evening in the largest recreation room, Susan gave a small speech to her troops praising their efforts against the Drakh attack, and held services for their deceased fellow crewmembers. Each crewmember was represented by his or her nearest friend, whom gave a short eulogy for each of them. The short program was recorded to allow those on duty to have closure. ***************************************************************** The ZEUS had been moving away from the site of the attack for forty-eight hours at her best crippled speed. She was ten million kilometers away when the Drakh ships jumped into the area of the attack. This had been the last known position of their missing ships. They found nothing except a lot of dust in the area. There were residual energy readings, but nothing to indicate what had happened. Not wishing to waste time the commander ordered them to start an expanding search pattern in hopes of finding a trace of where they might have gone. *************************************************************************** On the bridge of the ZEUS, Lyta felt the arrival of the Drakh minds even at this extreme distance. "Susan, we have to get out of here and now is a good time. The Drakh are here," said Lyta. "We can't go very far very fast with the jump engines out of commission and our fusion engines at less than half power," replied Captain Ivonava. Five minutes later, "Captain, engineering informed me that our jump engines are back on line," said an excited chief petty officer manning a power plant monitoring station. "Get us the hell out of here, chief!" ordered Ivonava. A large jump point opened in front of the ship and in less than a minute the ship was in hyperspace. Behind the captain's chair G'Kar couldn't believe what he was seeing on the forward tactical display. Looking around he saw that Lyta wasn't on the bridge. He saw the door to the captain's ready room open and Lyta stood in the doorway with white light fading from her eyes and color returning to her cheeks. She looked like warmed over death. Walking over to her, he asked, "How did you get those engines back on line?" "I didn't. They are still broken," she replied. Under his breath, he asked, "You moved this ship like you move my..." She nodded to cut him off. Susan looked around for Lyta and saw her being supported by G'Kar and the frame of the door to her ready room. At the same moment, "Captain, we just lost the jump engines again," reported the chief. "It's okay, chief. We don't need them to use a jump gate," replied the captain. "Navigation, set course for Proxima III, best speed." Walking over to Lyta, Susan said, "I want to talk to you alone in here." Wearily Lyta followed Susan back into her ready room. "I am very tired, Susan," said Lyta. "Lyta, I want to know just what is going on with you. You appeared out of nowhere and you have been wrecking havoc for the past several days!" demanded Susan. "You, your ship and crew are out of danger now. I think it is time for me, Maya and G'Kar to leave. I have appreciated your hospitality, but I don't have to answer your questions. You would not believe the answers anyway," replied Lyta. "Why don't you try me?" dared Susan. "If you insist, but don't say I didn't warn you." replied Lyta as her eyes flashed red and changed to white as she moved from the chair to the center of the room. Her eyes never left Susan as they got brighter and brighter until her whole body began to glow white. It was so brilliant, Susan had to squint her eyes to keep from being blinded and still the light got brighter. Susan now had her eyes screwed shut and her arms over them, but the light was so bright she could still see it. In desperation she turned toward the wall and had her back to Lyta and still the light was so bright it was blinding her. A voice in her head, sounding like God admonished her, "I told you, you couldn't understand, that what I have become is beyond your comprehension. I don't need a ship anymore, Susan." With that the light vanished and Susan opened her eyes, but all she could see were spots everywhere in front of her. Lyta was gone. Ivonava returned to the bridge still seeing mostly spots, and confronted G'Kar. "Did you know about her, G'Kar!" "No, captain. However, I have suspected for some time," replied the Narn. "Captain, we just had an energy reading that almost fried half our sensors. It seemed to come from all over the ship," reported a sensor console operator. "I have it again, captain. It's gone now." From the ready room door, "Are you looking for me Susan?" asked Lyta. Walking over to Lyta, Ivonava motioned her back into the ready room and said softly, "You aren't human anymore." Inside the ready room, "I am as human as you are, Susan. I have a human daughter, and I have a minbari warrior caste, whitestar captain who wants to marry me." "Last time I checked a human couldn't almost fry my ships sensors. What are you, Lyta?" asked Susan. "I am a Vorlon doomsday weapon. I was reengineered to destroy the Shadows and their minions. I am more dangerous than you can possibly imagine," replied Lyta. "You pulled us out of a bad jam and everyone on this ship owes you their life," replied Susan. "How do I repay you?" "Forget it. I only did what I thought was necessary," replied Lyta. "Now I have to figure out how to make the logs believable. It's going to be a ball buster," said Susan. "I can't hide the fact that you have been aboard my ship. Do you have any suggestions about how I can account for not arresting you?" "Tell them you tried and failed. After my performance on Babylon 5, they will believe you," answered Lyta. "Isn't there anything else I can do?" "Just to be on the safe side, I will remain onboard until we arrive at the Proxima III jump gate. I will leave before you exit hyperspace, because some idiot, trying to capture me, could get somebody hurt and I can't allow that," replied Lyta. "I would be honored if you would think of me as a friend in the future, in spite of what I am." ****************************************************************************** "Hello, Susotchka. Aren't you going to speak to your mother?" asked the woman standing front of Susan. It couldn't be, but it was. Susan's mother was addressing her, but she was dead. This had to be a dream, but it was so real. She could smell her mother's perfume, very light on the breeze. Anyone looking at Susan's face would have seen tears running down her cheeks. "I came to help you with your troubles," said the image of her mother. Susan forced herself to reach out to the image and the image took her offered hand. It was warm and solid to Susan's touch. Her mind was having trouble handling the situation. She had never had a dream as real as this one. Her mother led her to a blanket that was laying on the ground with a picnic lunch spread out upon it. They sat down and Susan took an offered sandwich. It tasted so good. Susan had only vague memories of the last picnic her mother had taken her and her brother on. She had been very young and the place as she remembered it had been just like this, but somehow different. "I know this is difficult for you, but you must let me help you. You are in danger from the Psi Corps. I can help you escape their inquisitions," said her mother in a soothing tone. Everything about this situation was causing Susan to relax and talking to her mother also caused her mental barriers to go down. However, she wasn't aware of the latter. She talked about what had happened to her in the last week or so and her mother listened attentively. After what seemed like forever Susan realized she had been talking her head off and her mother had just listened without interrupting her. She noticed that they had made short work of the picnic. She lay her head in her mother's lap and closed he eyes as her mother began to tell her how she would help her. Susan sat up with a start. She was in her bed in her cabin on the EAS ZEUS. It had been a dream, only a dream. It was a dream she would never forget. It had been so real, she could still taste the picnic lunch and smell her mother's perfume. She realized she was famished, and it was still two hours until she would normally awaken. For the first time in years, Susan found herself looking in the fridge trying to find a snack. While she had her head buried in the cooler section, her doorbell rang. She wondered who would have the balls to ring her doorbell in the wee hours of the morning, instead of using the comm. link. Only one person on board would have the nerve to do it. Lyta. Susan opened the door and Lyta walked in, dressed in a bathrobe. "I thought we should talk, Susan," said Lyta looking at the bread in Susan's hand. "I could use a snack," she continued. Susan just stood and stared for almost a full minute, then motioned with the hand holding the bread toward her pantry. Lyta followed. Susan made sandwiches for both of them. "It is supposed to be ham, but I wouldn't check too closely," said Susan, returning to her front room and taking a seat on the couch. She wondered what the crew would think to see her in a bathrobe, sitting on a couch with juice in one hand and a ham sandwich in the other at 0300 in the morning. Not exactly the image of their feared captain, they might expect. Washing down a bite of sandwich, Lyta said, "We need to discuss how you are going to handle the psi cops that will be all over this ship as soon as you get to Proxima III." "I am going to just let them interview the crew and conduct their investigation. I and my crew haven't done anything wrong. The memories of you being here aren't going to help them very much, and after Babylon 5, no normal can be held responsible for not being able to arrest you," replied Susan. After thinking for a minute, she continued, "You aren't here just for sandwiches and juice. Let me guess. It's time to erase my memories, isn't it?" "That won't be necessary. They won't be able to get anything from you. Your blocks will be more than adequate. You are very strong, Susan," replied Lyta. "How did you know I would be awake at this time of night?" asked Susan. "Just a wild guess?" answered Lyta. "That was you in my dream, wasn't it," inquired Susan. "I don't know what you are talking about." "I had a very vivid dream about my mother. She said she could help me. It was you in my mind, Lyta. You were in my mind and I didn't even know it," said Susan testily. "Just what were you hoping to accomplish?" "I wasn't hoping anything. You have a very strong mind. I helped you block parts of your mind, so I wouldn't have to remove any of your memories. You are the only person in this ship's crew, who knows exactly what has happened over the last week or so. If you don't think it was worth it, I can remove your blocks and erase your memories like I did everyone else. You are entitled to that choice," answered Lyta. "You picked the image of your mother for the dream, not I." Susan now remembered about the psi cop mole. She looked at Lyta. "You can be ruthless," she commented." "You would prefer he be able to expose you? I gave him what he desired, a reward for what he planned to do to you. It just wasn't what he expected. I looked into his mind. You wouldn't have been the first latent telepath he had destroyed. He enjoyed it. Don't shed any tears for him. Besides, he committed suicide." "I know," said Susan, checking her watch. "We will be arriving at the jump gate for Proxima III in about five hours. I am going to regret seeing you go. You have been everything anyone could want in a friend and then some." "I am just doing what I think is right," replied Lyta. "Another sandwich would be appreciated." Heading for the pantry, Susan said, "That goes for me too." Standing in the pantry making more sandwiches was Susan's steward. "Mary, what are you doing up?" asked Susan. "I heard noises, captain. I just wanted to make sure everything was alright," answered her steward. Putting her arm around Mary, Susan said, "She takes care of me like a second mother." Lyta smiled. Twenty minutes later Lyta took her leave and Ivonava went back to bed for the remaining hour or so left of the night. The feeling of warmth was comforting and all encompassing. The love and affection was infusing itself throughout her being. It felt so wonderful. called the very small child, and felt the warmth get even more intense. The little girl had never understood the intense feelings she experienced while feeding at her mothers breast. In the past they had frightened her and she had tried her best to escape them. Now they weren't frightening anymore. She wanted them with all her heart. The feelings of pleasure were almost too much to for her mind to hold, but she wanted more. Breathing harder than she had ever breathed before, and with her heart racing at almost triple its normal rate, Susan Ivonava jerked upright in her bed with sweat pouring off her like shower water. It took many minutes for her mind to grasp her reality and her heart rate to return to normal. She realized for the first time in her life that what she had experienced with her mother was for a child the ultimate in parental love and concern. The mind touches she had felt from her mother weren't intrusions. It was her mother giving her love in a direct manner. Her young mind hadn't understood and her mother was untrained in handling the situation. Why, now of all times, did she understand this? Lyta, damn her. She just wouldn't quit. Susan was furious that Lyta would invade her mind like that. The frightening part was that she hadn't been aware of Lyta's presence. In the past she had always known when another telepath touched her mind. She wanted to do something, say something, but what? Lyta wasn't some run-of-the-mill telepath. She couldn't prove that what she had experienced hadn't just been her own overactive imagination, fueled by the tremendous stress of the last week or so, and Lyta would smile that damn smile of hers and deny everything. **************************************************************************** At her breakfast table, Susan thanked Mary for getting up during the night to check on her. "Captain, I never got up last night. I never awoke at all," replied Mary. Had it all been just a dream? Was Lyta ever in her quarters? [I definitely have to see the doctor,] thought Susan to herself. **************************************************************************** "Okay G'Kar, take us out," said Lyta as the ship lifted from the deck of the hanger bay. A few minutes later G'Kar's ship was moving away from the EAS ZEUS as the destroyer keyed the jumpgate's exit sequence. As Lyta had predicted there were shuttles waiting to land in the ZEUS's hanger bay. End part F From: "Aubrey W. "Captain Ivonava, request permission to come aboard?" asked General Leftcourt. "Permission granted general. I will meet you in the hanger bay," replied Ivonava. "Captain. There is a Psi Corps shuttle requesting permission to dock with us." "Tell them to follow General Leftcourt's shuttle in," replied Susan. **************************************************************** Aboard General Leftcourt's shuttle. "Pilot, take us around the ship. I want to see the damage," ordered the general. The general and his staff all were looking closely at the Zeus during the flyby on both sides and the top and bottom. There were low whistles at the extent of the damage. Some wondered how it survived. General Leftcourt found it hard to believe the ship could sustain so much damage and survive. It spoke well for the new armor she had. A regular destroyer would have been so much wreckage under the same circumstances. The Psi Corps shuttle followed Leftcourt's shuttle on its inspection run. ***************************************************************************** "Greetings Susan. It is good to see you again, all things considered," said Leftcourt giving Susan's hand a very firm warm shake. "It is by dumb luck that we are here general," replied Susan. "Captain Ivonava, where is my representative," asked Alfred Bester. "In the brig, Mr. Bester," answered Susan. "Ensign, escort Mr. Bester to the brig, so he can meet with Mr. Wayne." "Captain Ivonava. Why is he in the brig?" asked Bester. "I put him there," answered Ivonava. "It keeps him out of my way and out of trouble." Scowling Bester followed the ensign away from the hanger deck. "You really don't like telepaths, do you?" said Leftcourt. "I don't like Psi Corps or anyone who is part of it, general. I have never made a secret of my feelings. I was forced to take a psi cop on board when I started this patrol. They could have assigned a P-5 commercial telepath to the job," responded Susan. "I am not here to ask how you keep your telepaths in line. I and my staff want to see your logs. These Drakh you mentioned in your latest reports appear to be something we badly need to get a handle on," replied Leftcourt. The general's staff spent the remainder of the day doing preliminary analysis of the ships logs. It didn't take a weapons expert to determine that the Zeus had been badly over matched in the battle. Three hundred fighters with firepower almost equal to the IA whitestars, four cruisers any of which was almost a match for the Zeus gun for gun and fighters that didn't hesitate to make kamikaze runs. Several of the hull breaches were made in that manner. "Susan, you didn't fight your way out of this situation, did you?" asked Leftcourt. "No sir. We had help. Without it, we would have been destroyed," answered Ivonava. "Captain, why did you not arrest and detain Lyta Alexander?" inquired Bester. "Mr. Bester. ,If you are so hot to get your hands on her, I will arrange for a ship to take you to her," retorted Susan. "I might ask, why didn't you arrest her on Babylon 5 when you had the opportunity when Byron was killed? She was a rogue then." "That has no bearing on this situation," he replied. "The hell it doesn't. Maybe you weren't watching those logs being played back. I suggest you do," she shot back. "Lyta destroyed three of those cruisers and saved our asses. If you want to go up against her, be my guest. Just don't try to do it on my ship." "Susan," asked Leftcourt, "How did she accomplish that?" "General, she is a very powerful telekinetic. She just destroyed the safeties on their powerplants and sent them into runaway overload," replied Susan. "You could have tried to sedate her," insisted Bester. "Mr. Bester, you might have a better chance of sedating God. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about," replied Susan. "Besides, if you are going to investigate what actually happened here over the last two weeks, you should get started. You can use my ready room to conduct your interviews. Let Ensign Walker know what you need for support. He will coordinate quarters for you and your staff." "Very well captain," responded Bester. "Are sure you don't want us to use the brig?" Susan appeared to be giving that statement serious thought. "I will take it under advisement for the time being Mr. Bester." replied the captain. "You really don't like him do you?" asked Leftcourt. Leaning over close to Leftcourt's ear, Susan said, "Let me tell you a little story about him and me, general." Two minutes later the general was looking at Susan with wide eyes of astonishment. "That surely answers that question, once and for all," said Leftcourt. Susan just gave him a smug smile. ************************************************************************** The interviews by Bester and company took almost three weeks and in the end he was satisfied he had all there was worth getting, including excerpts from the ship's logs. He managed to get Wayne moved back to his quarters, but Ivonava would not remove the restriction to quarters order. As Lyta had prophesied, it cemented Wayne's position with Bester. Much later it would be the thing that kept Wayne alive during the last phase of the impending telepath war. *************************************************************************** It would be months before the final results of the inquiry into the Zeus incident were arrived at and most of it would never be made public, but Captain Ivonava would be found faultless in her handling of the situation and its results. Lyta's part in it would never be known except in a few highly placed offices and the upper echelons of Psi Corps. She would be tagged "Rogue: extremely dangerous; observe, but under NO circumstances, attempt to apprehend". ********************************************************************** "She is really that dangerous, Al?" asked the director. "Sir, you saw the log excerpts and the data crystals from Babylon 5. Would you want to try to take her down?" answered Bester. "Are you nuts!" replied the director. It was now a year and a half since Lyta and G'Kar had left Minbar. They were in low orbit over Mars awaiting final clearance and landing instructions. "Lyta, while you conduct your business here, I am going to go to earth. I want to do some research on earth religions and customs," said G'Kar. "Take as long as you want G'Kar. I am here for business with Michael Garibaldi, and it will likely take quite some time. After all, I have a war to win," replied Lyta. G'Kar gave Lyta a look that said, "Not that." "Don't worry G'Kar. I don't intend to harm anyone. I just want Psi Corps gone and the people Michael has gathered and trained are going to make that happen. We are going to shine a light on the festering load of pus that Psi Corps has become," said Lyta. Maya was two years old now and talking as well as most six-year olds. "Mommy, what is war?" "I will explain later after you meet Mr. Garibaldi, sweetheart," replied Lyta. ****************************************************************************** G'Kar landed long enough to let Lyta and Maya off, and to refuel before continuing on to earth. Lyta and Maya passed through immigration and customs without incident. They, however, did not go unnoticed. A psi cop assigned to the spaceport watched as they cleared customs and immediately went to a nearby public communications terminal and reported the arrival to Psi Corps headquarters on Mars. In spite of Mars' recognition as a free planet, the corps still maintained their facilities there. The psi cop was told to monitor her, but not to approach her. Officially she was a rogue, but too dangerous for apprehension by normal means. What means to be used weren't outlined. asked Lyta. replied Maya. said Lyta, pushing the folded stroller in front of her. The psi cop was following less than six meters behind them. He was amazed that there was absolutely no thought leakage from either of them. He wondered about the little girl, since she wasn't identified as a telepath. Just ahead of him he observed a very large man almost trip over Lyta's daughter. Looking at Lyta and Maya the man became very abusive and drew back to hit either Lyta or her daughter. The man swung his fist, but it never landed. He doubled over apparently in intense pain and lay writhing silently on the concourse. Lyta looked at him like he was a piece of excrement, took Maya's hand, stepped over the man, and proceeded down the concourse. Medical examination would reveal no apparent damage to the man. The psi cop stopped a moment to check the fellow out, but a crowd was gathering, so he hurried after Lyta and Maya. Lyta had put Maya into the stroller and was walking much faster as a result. The psi cop had gone about ten meters away from the man before he realized he could not read any feelings of pain from him. As a matter of fact he wasn't getting any thoughts from the people around him. Someone was completely jamming him. He remembered the advisory that normal means would not work on this woman and began to understand why. Even a high P-12 couldn't blank an area like this. That she could do this and still carry on a telepathic conversation with someone was unknown to him or any of his superiors. As Lyta approached the ticketing counter to get tickets and other information about Garibaldi's location, a man in his early thirties stepped up to her and introduced himself. "Pardon me, ma'am. My name is Max Kelly. If you are Lyta Alexander, I was sent to bring you to Mr. Garibaldi," said Max by way of introductions. Lyta sensed that he was genuine, and accepted his hospitality. Behind her the psi cop made a few mental notes and gave up following when he saw her escorted to a private tube car. Lyta noted the psi cops departure and smiled to herself. "Have you known Mr. Garibaldi very long, Ms. Alexander?" "Michael and I are sort of old friends," replied Lyta. Max looked doubtful. "I didn't know Mr. Garibaldi had any friends that are telepaths." "I am an exception, Max. It's a long story. Ask Michael sometime." The trip from the spaceport had taken almost forty-five minutes. As she departed the tube car Lyta noticed the sign, "Welcome to Edgar Industries, Inc. Corporate Headquarters Mars Division". Inside the lobby Max expedited Lyta's getting an ID badge and led her to the elevators. In less than five minutes, Max ushered Lyta into Garibaldi's office. Looking around her, Lyta took in the expensive furnishings, large desk, leather couch and six leather chairs spaced around the office. "Nice digs Michael," said Lyta turning to focus on the balding man behind the desk. "Thanks for sending Max to meet me. It made things easier." "Comes with the job, Lyta, and it was my pleasure. G'Kar gave me a heads up when you were in orbit awaiting clearance," Michael responded, coming around the desk. Without hesitation he put his arms around Lyta and hugged her like a bear. "Are you okay?" she asked stepping back from his embrace. "Better than ever, Lyta. If things got any better, it would be illegal." "You got a handle on the alcoholism. I am pleased." "Have a seat," he said noticing the stroller and toddler. "I didn't know you had a kid." "She was born in space aboard G'Kar's ship. I suppose that makes her a person without a planet. Sort of 'human-at-large'. Delenn didn't like that. Her birth is recorded as having occurred on a whitestar, so she is registered as a natural born citizen of Minbar." Michael smiled. "You aren't here for a social call. You want to know if I have fulfilled my part of our bargain? I think you will be very pleased with my efforts." "That's what I want to discuss. I've changed my mind about how I want to do this." Still smiling, Michael said, "John told me what you said to him. We have done what you wanted. Our people, mine and yours, have been doing a job on Psi Corps in the media. You may not know since you and G'Kar have been planet hopping in areas outside IA influence. Your people are wanting to meet with you and discuss future operations." Lyta nodded in agreement. "You set up the meeting. Just tell me when and where." "If what I've done meets with your approval, I expect you to keep your end of our bargain?" "I can't do that, Michael." "Why not?" "I removed the Asimov block the first time we talked in my cell on Babylon 5," replied Lyta. "I did it as insurance against something happening to me. It would allow you to destroy Bester and Psi Corps." "You mean, I could have trashed that little bastard anytime during the last two years?" Lyta nodded. "I always keep my promises, Michael." "Am I being presumptuous by having my people make arrangements for your housing while you're here?" "Not at all. I appreciate the gesture. You keep this up and I will start to feel like someone important." "I hate to disappoint you, but it is already too late for that," replied Michael with humor. ************************************************************************** Two days after arriving on Mars, Lyta sat down for her first meeting with Garibaldi and the local leaders of the anti-Psi Corps movement. Standing at her position at the table, Lyta began addressing her fellow conspirators. "I don't know any of you by name, yet. I am Lyta Alexander. During the past two years, you have been working with one another and Mr. Garibaldi to harass Psi Corps. Up until now, my contribution has been in the form of money. You have been down in the trenches, so to speak. It's time that I took a more active part in the operations, here and on earth. I can gain access to Psi Corps facilities that you cannot and obtain passwords and codes for every sensitive computer system the corps uses or has access to. It is time we stepped up our campaign. You each have your responsibilities. Nothing will change about them, except I will be working closely with your computer gurus. Any questions?" asked Lyta. Hands went up all around the table. ****************************************************************************** "Good evening, Mr. Menlow. It's so nice to meet you," said Lyta Alexander to the director of Psi Corps intelligence on Mars. Mr. Menlow was stunned at her presence. His office was in the most secure part of the building, ten floors below the ground. He was facing a stunning redheaded female. It took him almost a minute to realize who she was, then he lapsed into complete disbelief. "How did you get here?" he demanded. "I took the elevator, of course," she replied. "What do you want?" he asked. "Information, what else. After all, that is what you do, isn't it?" she asked in return. Menlow's mind was racing. She was here and that was a fact. She was apparently alone. She had to pass through at least eight identification checkpoints to get here, yet, no alarm had been raised. That should have been impossible. He pushed a button under his desk to summon help. The Alexander woman smiled at him. "You can push that button until you get blisters on all your fingers, but no one will hear any alarm," commented Lyta. "What have you done to the staff in this section of the building? He demanded. "Nothing, actually," she replied. "They think you told them you didn't want to be disturbed under any circumstances for the next two hours. They were so cooperative, I wouldn't dream of harming any of them." "Glaring at her, "what makes you think I will just roll over and do your bidding?" he asked. "Nothing. You will volunteer everything I want, and the best part is you won't remember anything about it. An hour later Lyta left Menlow's office with all the passwords and codes a computer hacker could wish for to raid the intelligence files at Mars Psi Corps headquarters. Menlow would wake up from a nap and remember nothing about her presence. He would even change the passwords and codes over the next year, if the corps lasted that long, with the ones she had implanted in his mind. With what she had obtained from twenty department heads and their assistants, the intelligence director, financial and operations directors and the overall director of the Mars branch of the corps, taking down the corps on Mars was going to be a relative simple operation. Earth, however, was going to be another can of worms., same as Mars, just vastly larger. ******************************************************************************** Lyta leaned over the shoulder of the young computer expert. "Are they working?" She asked, referring to the security passwords and codes she had provided. "Like a charm, ma'am," replied the young man. He was one of six computer experts from Garibaldi's recruited force working the present shift. The efforts to ransack Psi Corps files and archives was a twenty four hour a day process. The process had speeded up considerably since Lyta had made her data available. The real difficulty was becoming how to use the data to best effect. Lyta wasn't worried. She knew Garibaldi would handle it the way he had handled everything else so far. He was destroying Psi Corps and all that Bester held dear. A kid in a candy factory couldn't enjoy himself nearly as much as Michael was. Her removal of the Asimov block was icing on Michael's cake. *************************************************************************** It was three months since Lyta had come to mars and she was feeling restless and not very useful. Planning operations was necessary, but it wasn't very exciting. "Michael, I am going to earth," said Lyta. "Why?" he asked. "I want to get my hands dirty. I feel left out," she answered. "Lyta. You're the leader of this little war. You're what makes it go, you are the inspiration. Think of yourself as the president. She doesn't fight in the trenches. Besides, it is dangerous,'' argued Michael. "I won't be in any danger, Michael, and you know it," replied Lyta. "You know that and I know that, but no one else does, and one of the troops could get killed trying to keep you from harm," he shot back. "I can be helpful in ways you can't imagine," she argued back. Michael gave her a look that would have made anyone else cringe, but it was wasted on Lyta. "I will make the arrangements,' he said in defeat. Lyta smiled, "Thank you, Michael." *************************************************************************** Getting Lyta passed earth security was child's play. The paperwork would have passed any amount of close scrutiny. Lyta wasted no time in putting herself to work getting codes and passwords for both Psi Corps and Earth Alliance computers. What she and her people were doing was waging an all out information war. A war that would destroy Psi Corps by removing all of its supports. Lyta had likened it to using explosives to level a building in the middle of a city without doing any collateral damage. Lyta had gone on a raid on a rehabilitation camp. She had used her power to disable the camp guards, but not before one machine gunner had managed to rake her position with a long burst of fire. All of the raiders were supposed to be wearing clothing made from her armor fabric. One young man, a local, hadn't received his and he caught several rounds before the gun was silenced. Lyta was knocked off her feet from her crouched position by the young man's body being thrown against her by the force of the impacts. Without conscious thought, she assessed the damage. The bullets had gone through his body. Fortunately the heavy slugs had not distorted , so the damage, though massive, wasn't as bad as it might have been. Holding the boy's mind in an iron grip, she quickly started pouring her life force into him as she used her telekinetic abilities to repair the damage. Several meters away a young man and woman were too stunned to move as they watched what Lyta was doing. What they saw was seared into their memories. Lyta fell across the boy's body completely drained by her efforts. She was unaware that she had been seen. The man and woman moved away quickly and rejoined their fellow soldiers. Lyta realized she was being lifted from the ground by one of her older supporters, who asked, "Ms. Alexander, are you hurt?" Looking up to see who was addressing her, she replied, "I am fine. I am a little tired." "What happened?" He asked. "We almost got hit by the gunfire," she replied, looking at the young man she had just saved. Fortunately, he would have no memory of what she had done. She got up and helped the man pick up the young man who was just beginning to show signs of consciousness. The remainder of the raid went without a hitch. Unknown to Lyta, the story started making its way through the ranks of the telepaths and their supporters. Her forces had been liberating telepath rehabilitation, (read slave labor/torture), camps as fast as possible. The live feeds, videos and such were causing uproars from telepaths in Psi Corps, who had been blissfully unaware, and normals. The horrors of what been happening to their brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and other relatives, in the name of rehabilitation was sickening to the general population. The media was pounding the idea that telepaths could be monitored and controlled without being stoned on drugs or locked up, incessantly. Garibaldi's resources left no avenue of trashing Psi Corps and company unused. It wasn't long before Lyta's picture was being plastered all over the media. She was branded a terrorist and trouble maker as the Psi Corps tried to discredit her and the telepath movement she represented. It didn't help the corps cause, but it did get her listed as an undesirable, meaning she would have to leave EA space. ******************************************************************************** "Good morning, Madam. President," said Lyta. President Luchenko could be given credit for not jumping out of her skin. The door had not opened or shut, there had been no sound, but there was a redheaded woman standing on the other side of her desk, addressing her. Looking at Lyta, she asked, "How did you get in here?" "I didn't,' came the response. "I am not really here, but we can talk anyway." The president mulled this statement over for almost a minute, before responding, "If I call the guard, will he see you?" "He won't hear you, Madam President,' replied Lyta. "I am leaving earth for now, but I will return." "And when do you propose to do that?" she asked. "Long after everyone now alive is dead and forgotten, Madam President. I am leaving because my reason for coming is coming to pass. My people will be free and that is all that matters. You may call your guards now, but they won't find me here." The president watched the image of Lyta fade to nothing and wondered if she had imagined the whole thing. ******************************************************************************** The short stocky man sat at a rear table at the sidewalk cafe. His partner was late. A shadow fell across his line of sight. "Hello, Alfred. Waiting for someone?" asked Lyta Alexander. Taking the chair across the table from him. "You have been busy, lately," he replied. "You know how it is, when you're tearing down a card house. Sometimes it's fun, sometimes just plain work. How's tricks these days?" she inquired. Bester just scowled at her and the little girl with her. "Can I buy you a drink?" she asked motioning for the waiter. Bester nodded no. "I'll have a coffee with cream and no sugar. My daughter will have iced tea with sugar on the side," Lyta told the waiter. After the waiter left, Lyta said, "Maya, this the man responsible for your father's death." The girl looked Bester over very carefully. She was very deliberate. "What can I do to him, mommy?" she asked. "Anything you want. I want you to show him the same mercy that he has shown others. You can scan him and learn about that," she answered. "Are you serious, Lyta?" asked Bester. The mental assault he experienced was beyond anything he had ever encountered before. His blocks didn't even hold for a heartbeat. Reeling mentally, he said, "Lyta, don't do this." "I'm not, Alfred. She is," answered Lyta. His blocks were down and he felt like his mind was being run through a shredder. As suddenly as it began, it stopped. "He is a very ugly little man, mommy. I am going to punish him my way," Maya said matter-of-factly. "Don't kill him sweetheart. Mr. Garibaldi wants him very badly. Oh, and I removed the Asimov block," said Lyta. The waiter returned and served Lyta's and Maya's drinks took payment and tip and left. He never paid any attention to Bester's distress. Little bastard didn't even tip, he thought to himself as he left. Maya put sugar into her tea, took a drink and turned her attention back to Bester. He was visibly sweating. Maya finished what she was doing to Bester's mind about the same time she finished her tea. He wasn't sure what she had done. It hadn't been particularly painful, but he knew she had put a number of blocks in. "Don't worry, Alfred," said Lyta. 'I am doing the same thing to every psi cop I can find. I think it is most appropriate." Lyta and Maya left Bester sitting at the table wondering. He didn't have to wonder long. His associate was approaching and Bester attempted to mind-talk with him. The pain that shot through his mind brought tears to his eyes. It hurt worse than anything he had ever been subjected to before. Seeing his associate's reaction, he asked, "Al, what is wrong?" Bester tried to mentally reach out and felt the pain wash over him again. He began to realize what had been done to him. Whatever they had done, there wasn't anyone who could undo it. He was beginning to regret a great many things, but it would do him no good. ******************************************************************************* ******************************************************************************** A year had passed since Lyta had appeared to President Luchenko, and Lyta and Maya were sitting in Michael Garibaldi's office saying good-byes and thank-yous for his many efforts in the telepath war. "Lyta, what you did to Bester, it was better than anything I could have dreamed up," said Garibaldi. "It was Maya's idea and she did it. You have to admit, it is appropriate, really fits his crimes," she replied. "I get this warm feeling all over inside every time I think about it," he answered. "Mommy, why do we have to leave?" asked Maya. "I am to blame, sweetheart. My activities in destroying Psi Corps have made me 'persona non grata'. It means I am not welcome here, anymore," replied Lyta. "That's not entirely true, Lyta," commented Garibaldi. "It's close enough, Michael. I think it's time Maya and I departed," answered Lyta. "Lyta, I have to ask one big question, said Michael. "Is it true?" "Is what true?" she countered. "The story about what happened with the kid on that raid?" "I don't know what you are talking about, Michael," she replied. "Lyta, we have two witnesses and they have been scanned. They're telling the truth," insisted Michael. "What truth, Michael?" she countered. "They say you brought the kid back from being dead," answered Michael. Lyta sat and thought about it for almost two minutes, then started to smile. "He wasn't dead Michael. He was wearing protective clothing, but he was hit by eight or ten heavy machine gun rounds. He was knocked out and had trouble breathing. I performed emergency breathing assistance on him. His chest was badly bruised and he had six cracked ribs, but he wasn't dead. The two witnesses may really believe he was killed. I can see how they might think that. I am sorry, Michael, but it is only a good story. Myths are made from much less," said Lyta, sporting a huge smile on her face. Looking straight into her eyes, Garibaldi said, "I'll have Max take you to the spaceport." The look he was giving her told her he knew she was lying, but he could never prove it. "I appreciate the offer Michael, but it's not necessary," replied Lyta. "You seem to be traveling light. Why only the one suitcase?" inquired Michael. "All we need is soap, toothpaste, toothbrush and a couple of changes of clothing. Anything else just gets in the way," she replied. "Have you decided where you will go?" asked Michael. "Not yet. I hope to be traveling with G'Kar again, but if he isn't ready to leave, I will find something else leaving EA space. It will take a few flight changes to get entirely away from their space, but after that, who knows? There are places where they've never heard of me. G'Kar and I visited a couple of systems that might even welcome me back, if you can imagine that," said Lyta. "I bet they have no idea what you are, do they?" asked Michael. "No. They don't have any idea, and I like it that way," was her wistful reply. Michael came around his desk and shook Lyta's hand. He picked Maya up and gave her a hug. "Goodbye, Uncle Mike, " said Maya as she and Lyta went out the door. *********************************************************************** Michael stepped over to his comm. panel and initiated a call. The minbari who answered asked, "How may I help you Mr. Garibaldi?" "Lyta is on her way to the spaceport with Maya. I tried to send Max with her, but she wouldn't have it," responded Michael. "Thank you, Mr. Garibaldi. I appreciate your calling me. We will take care of it," responded the minbari, closing the channel. *********************************************************************** end part G From: "Aubrey W. Lyta went to the information counter and inquired about G'Kar and his ship. She learned he had departed earlier that day. She was disappointed, since she had told him she would meet him here. True, she was a little late, but from what she learned, he had made no effort to wait. Maybe G'Kar had become tired of having her and Maya underfoot. He hadn't seemed put out when she had last talked with him. In fact, he had seemed very pleased that she wanted to go planet hopping with him again. It was damned confusing. Taking Maya by the hand with one hand, and carrying her suitcase in the other, Lyta got in line at the nearest ticket counter. She had been told what was outbound leaving EA and IA space and was getting ready to pay for the tickets when she heard someone address her from behind. Turning to see who it was, she found herself looking at a young minbari, wearing an odd looking uniform. It finally occurred to her that he was a ranger, and the odd looking uniform was a standard ranger uniform made from the fabric she had helped develop. Seeing it on someone in public for the first time made her realize just how much potential the fabric had. It made fine silk look like gunny sack material. "Ms. Alexander?" asked the ranger again. "Yes." "The captain is waiting for you. Shall we go?" asked the ranger Curious about what was going on, Lyta picked up her suitcase, took Maya's hand and followed the ranger down the long concourse to its end and out of the building. There was a small minbari shuttle waiting for them. Lyta grimaced to herself. It wasn't missed by Maya. observed her daughter. Lyta nodded in response. ***************************************************************************** In Garibaldi's office, his communications panel chirped. "Garibaldi here," said Michael into the panel pickup. "We got her, before she could get away. Thanks again," said the minbari on the screen. "Got who, before they got away, Michael?" asked Lise coming through the back door of his office. "Lyta," responded Michael. "Who wants her? What has she done wrong?" asked Lise. "It's a little hard to explain, Lise. Lyta isn't exactly your regular kind of person." Lise had met Lyta and her daughter, Maya, on a number of occasions and could not remember anything out of the ordinary about them except that they were telepaths. "Try!" she demanded. "She is wanted on Minbar. A whitestar was sent to pick her up before she could disappear again. That was the call you overheard." "She seemed okay to me. I have watched ISN and know why she isn't allowed in EA space, but the minbari? What did she do to them?" asked Lise. "I am not sure, but Delenn wants her brought back there. I suppose it's something personal. She and Delenn are old friends, so I don't think she is in any kind of trouble." ****************************************************************************** Lyta wasn't surprised to see a whitestar waiting in orbit for them. She might have known that Delenn wouldn't let her just vanish, not without some objections. Addressing the ranger, who was now piloting the shuttle, "Which whitestar is this?" "It is Whitestar 71, Captain Sheraun commanding, Ms. Alexander," responded the ranger. Muttering to herself, Lyta said, "She's about as subtle as a bulldozer." "Ma'am?" inquired the ranger. "Nothing," replied Lyta. *********************************************************************** In the hanger bay control, Captain Sheraun awaited Lyta's arrival. As Lyta and Maya exited the shuttle, Sheraun said, "You did tell me this wasn't over." Lyta was standing very close. Sheraun picked up Maya. "You, young lady, have really grown since I last saw you," said Sheraun. Reaching to finger Sheraun's crestbone, Maya asked, "Are you going to marry my mommy?". Taking Lyta's hand, he responded, "That is entirely up to your mother." As they left the hangar deck, Lyta removed her hand from his and put her arm around his waist. Watching the captain and Lyta leave the hangar bay, three rangers, new on board, traded knowing smiles. They had heard stories about the redhead, some would warm a man's heart and soul, others would freeze the blood in his veins. END From: "Aubrey W. The beat up shuttle she had bought with carefully siphoned funds was untraceable. In less than a standard day she and Maya would leave the freighter she had booked passage on, in it. The freighter captain and his crew would have no memory that they were ever there, much less where they left his ship. ***************************************************************************** "Delenn. Have we had any luck locating Lyta?" asked John Sheridan of his wife. "No. It's as if she just ceased to exist. Somehow she and Maya were able to pass themselves off as members of various races and had the correct papers as far as we can tell. After their fourth planetary stop we completely lost them. They could be anywhere," she replied, then thoughtfully, "Smile, John. She is finally out of your hair." "I just hate knowing she can show up anywhere at anytime," he answered. "Captain Sheraun is very depressed that he missed her. He is hopelessly in love with her," replied Delenn. "I can't say I am sorry she is gone, but I do regret not treating her better when I should have. ****************************************************************************** The shuttle dropped through the dark Glenthorian sky, undetected by any of the myriad defense systems monitoring the airspace over the various countries. As the sun was coming up the shuttle lightly landed in the field behind an enormous ranch house. Lyta and Maya exited into the arriving morning. The crisp pungent odors of a working ranch grabbed their sense of smell and jolted their senses into full operation. "It's beautiful, mommy!' exclaimed Maya. "Are we going to stay here?" "Yes, sweetheart. We are going to be here a very long time," answered her mother. People were coming out of the main house to meet them. It was going to be the first time most of them had ever met their employer. Lyta and Maya walked to meet them. "We have been here before, haven't we," asked Maya, as the leader of the group approached Lyta, hand outstretched. "Good morning, Ms. Alexander," said her foreman. "It is good to see you again." "Hello, Kartf," she replied shaking the offered hand vigorously. "I need to make a call." Twenty minutes later, Lyta finished her call to Ambassador Hental. He was a good friend and her presence on the planet would be forgotten or disavowed in the future. They owed her a lot and she didn't ask for much in return. ***************************************************************************** End part H2 From: "Aubrey W. Lyta became aware of the orbiting whitestar and could feel the mind of its captain, Sheraun. She shifted G'kar's ship to hyperspace, catching G'Kar by surprise. In the spaceport the young ranger was searching everywhere for Lyta and Maya and asking questions about them at the tube debarkation points. Finally he reported to his captain that apparently they had never arrived at the spaceport. ********************************************************************* "Why didn't you wait and let me use the jumpgate?" Lyta. "It is Sheraun's whitestar. They are looking for me G'Kar. The farther we get from EA and IA space the better I will feel," she replied. "How can you be sure he was here after you?" "We passed one of his crew in the spaceport, and I could read his intentions, even without scanning him." "Who is looking for you?" "The IA apparently. After all it is an IA ship and who knows what Sheridan will try next. Let's face it G'Kar, he won't be satisfied until he sees my body lying dead on the floor in front of him." "Don't you think you are exaggerating the situation? He wouldn't have sent Sheraun after you if that were his intent." "Yes he would. It would seem to be a good way to catch me off guard. I am not biting." "Mommy, why does he want to kill you?" asked Maya. "It is a long story, dear. One day I will explain it to you. Don't worry, I won't give him the chance." G'Kar knew why the Whitestar 71 had been sent to get Lyta and John Sheridan had nothing to do with it. It had been Delenn's idea as a means of getting her and Sheraun together again, but Lyta had managed to avoid it. Knowing what his friend was capable of doing, he decided to not argue. She was extremely paranoid since the telepath war and he didn't need her thinking he was part of a plot against her. "You haven't done anything to rate being hunted by the IA, Lyta." "You don't seem to understand, G'Kar, this is Sheridan we are talking about here. When it comes to me, he doesn't need a reason, only a chance. Out here, it is hard for Delenn to keep track of what he is doing." *********************************************************************** In Garibaldi's office, his communications panel chirped. "Garibaldi here," said Michael into the panel pickup. "We missed her and she got away. Can you recheck her route?" asked the minbari on the screen. "Will do," answered Michael. "Missed who? Who got away, Michael?" asked Lise coming through the back door of his office. "Lyta," responded Michael. "Who wants her? What has she done wrong?" asked Lise. "It's a little hard to explain, Lise. I suppose anything is possible, now. She has a way of alienating people." "Has she alienated you, Michael?" "I owe her a lot, Lise. I owe her my life, several times, your life at least once, everything we have." "We both owe her everything we have and hope to have in the future. Does that about cover it?" Michael nodded. He felt sorry for Lyta. All she had was Maya and what she carried in that suitcase, but then again she had all the account numbers and access codes for the pile of money she had stashed in the secret telepath accounts, and now that the war was over, it was available for other uses. He wondered if she would use any of it. *********************************************************************** "We missed her, Entil'za Delenn," said Sheraun from the communications display screen. "Somehow she avoided the ranger we had waiting in the spaceport. She had to pass him." "We are dealing with Lyta, here, captain. She can do things to prevent herself and Maya from being recognized. You can return to your regular patrol, captain," said Delenn. Captain Sheraun executed a bow of acceptance and respect. Delenn broke the connection and sat back in her chair. Her friend was a real pain. You couldn't do anything for her. She wondered for a long time how Lyta had known about the whitestar, and why she went to lengths to avoid it. It came back to only one explanation. She must have thought John sent it. He hated her with an unreasonable hatred. Unreasonable, because it had no basis in fact or action. She thought back to what Lyta had explained about her visit by Lorien. She supposed it was Lorien's way of making sure Lyta didn't interfere with John's life line. *********************************************************************** "Lyta, I have been thinking that maybe dragging Maya around to all these worlds isn't the greatest idea in the galaxy," Said G'Kar. "Are you trying to get rid of me G'Kar?" "No. the little one needs others her age." "I hate to point out the obvious, G'Kar, but like me she is pretty much one of a kind. There are no others her age." "Point taken. This is no way for her to grow up." "I agree. However, I am not welcome any planet with a human population, and very few of any other kind," she replied, then after hesitating momentarily, "I will make you a deal. Just drop us off on the next available planet with a spaceport. The more backwater the better." A week later she said her goodbyes to G'Kar, both realizing this was the last time they would ever see one another. It was a very hard moment. With Maya holding one hand and her suitcase in the other Lyta walked toward the terminal entrance. Skimming some of the secret funds to which she had access, Lyta bought a broken down, but operational two person shuttle and took off into space. As she cleared the atmosphere she shifted to hyperspace. On the planet, traffic controllers almost had heart attacks when the shuttle just vanished. Using navigational abilities she had not known she possessed, Lyta took the shuttle into gravity wells that sane pilots avoided. In short order she exited hyperspace just above the planet Glenthor. The shuttle dropped through the dark Glenthorian sky, undetected by any of the myriad defense systems monitoring the airspace over the various countries. END (for now) In production "Further Adventures of Lyta"
