The older races would fade away, or return from the darkness..." -Delenn, Minbari Federation. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the immediate years that followed the Shadow War, Minbar became a more associated people, without need of Civil War. Valen had drawn up the three castes, the Workers, Religious and the Warrior castes, and each had three as members of the Grey Council. Soon enough, the Grey Council travelled the stars with Valen, exploring and watching the young races, and preparing for the return of the Shadows. The Minbari weren't the only ones exploring the younger races and watching for the return of the Shadows. The Vorlon were keeping close eyes on the Shadow's allies, who were bound to either guard Shadow territory, or attack in response to the outcome of the war. As time went by, the D'remork'ra vanished from the star charts as their race slowly died out, lacking in enough vitamins in each generation until the last generation no longer continued and they then vanished... At that time, the D'remork'ra were the most powerful race next to the Vorlon, but that changed when they died out, and with the loss of so many ships in the Shadow War, they couldn't evacuate anywhere. Many theories arised from their deaths, that the Shadow's may have engineered the entire thing, and buried their ships in the D'remork'ra wastegrounds... The Minbari discovered newer worlds, and older ones, gained allies and enemies. But among the void of space lay the races that would dominate the galaxy sooner or later. They hadn't taken to the stars yet, but they would in time, it was only inevitable that all races would reach out to the stars if given the chance. And during the war, some of the races never got that chance. Races that were never heard of, and destroyed by the darkness that consumed the galaxy, and the darkness that will return, to do it's deed again... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Decades would pass before the Vorlon would begin to notice anything drastic happening in the young races. They avoided contact as much as possible with those races only just venturing into space. They kept strong ties with the Minbari, and the Minbari valued their friends among the Vorlon Empire. Among the new races that the Vorlon tried to avoid were the Streib. They were extremely young but had already grasped the power to navigate into Hyperspace with their own facilities. They already had mapped the Centauri and Narn, and were sure to go to Earth and the League sooner or later. Little did anyone know that the ride would come too close for the Streib, and an educational lesson for everyone else... The Vorlon may have been keeping eyes open for any unusual activity among the young races, but never actually went out of their way to find it. The Streib, on the otherhand were different, and to curious to do any good for anyone. One of their research ships travelled to Earth, and the consequences were quite bizarre... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * After much star mapping and charting the unknown, the Research Vessel would finally reach home after mapping this final system. Homeworld would be pleased with the report that the only species capable of space flight in their area was themselves. But, as yet, the Minbari and Vorlon hadn't been contacted. It was a simple mission, and had been uneventful so far. The Centauri colony was easy to slip in and out of, and the Narn were no different. But Earth, although a peaceful sight from above, had something menacing about it's people and culture. Upon measuring the pollution content of the atmosphere, it was showing small signs of radioactivity, a deadly pollutant that was only a result of fusion bombs, outlawed by the Streib people over a hundred years before. On a simple observation mission, something malfunctioned aboard the Streib ship, and the disaster hit the crew of the Research Vessel... With five minutes to save their lives they had no other choice but to get to a lifepod and hope that they'd float through space and find someone, if not, the chances of surviving the journey through Earth's atmosphere were slim to say the least. But, it was their best shot. Three to each lifepod was one thing everyone had to remember, and with a crew of twenty one, it worked out well considering there were ten lifepods. The Commanding officer and staff took the first pod, and eventually the remaining pods were too. But out of the seven pods launched in time, only one made it as the Research Vessel exploded taking the other six with them. The Commander looked back with grief and mourned the deaths of those who would've come after them, but realised the Real Gravity of the situation when he found his lifepod was burning up in Earth's atmosphere. Frantically trying to calm his command staff down, he attempted to make a soft landing. It was the softest he could arrange. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TO BE CONTINUED... The army trucks moved in with full military motion. Nothing would get in their way, and if anyone asked, some dipshit story would be made up for cover. No one could know about what was happening in Roswell New Mexico, and no one will know. A full convoy moving in the middle of the night to recover some meteor that hit the ground, there was certainly more to this than what met the eye, and it was certainly not a meteor they were picking up due to the amount of reports of lights, and yet, no earthquake in the area. Everyone had their suspicions, but even the United States Army had to be scared sometimes, and this certainly counted as one of those times... Upon arrival at the site, the military personnel saw something completely out of this world, and it was, it really was. Some kind of strange spaceship in a large crater in the middle of nowhere. Getting rid of the 'thing' didn't appear to be as big a problem as covering up a crater did. But trucks were already in position to fill the hole with dirt, and cranes were at ready to lift the 'thing' onto the semi that had just arrived. Work wasn't easy, hardly anyone wanted to touch the object, considering it was extra terrestrial, and everyone was worried about what might happen if it was touched. As it went, nothing went wrong, and no little green men came out to protect their ship. This was the beginning of many things... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Just a weather balloon, nothing to be afraid of, goodbye. Yes? Hello, yes that? Oh, it was just a weather balloon, thanks for your concern, bye. Hello? Oh yeh that! It was just a routine weather balloon, no worries there, bye." and so it went on. The lies to cover up one of Earth's biggest stories. The Streib who were aboard the capsule were taken to a facility and examined. The human's learnt a great deal about the Streib, but they didn't stop in their warrior's quest to dominate their world. Just as the Streib had come in peace and weren't at Earth for any hostile intent, the human's were still content to blow up their world, but the effects of their actions wouldn't hit for a long time to come... Eventually, as time went by, people began to question the story of the weather balloon, and evidence was brought up about the conspiracy of a UFO and a secret airbase being used to construct similar devices in the Arizona Desert of the United States. Similar projects went on in the USSR, China, Europe and everywhere else on the globe, but no one learned a thing as each time, one side would attack the other. By the 1980's, war was a common thing for the human's, and it wasn't until the next decade that action would be taken into preserving their world. Even so, it would be a while for any damage to be repaired, with the southern ice caps melting and the Ozone Layer depleting itself, Earth was at a sorry stage. But the human's found their strength as a young race and joined together to repair the damage the previous generations had done. But no matter how one rebuild's from the old, people never forget the harm that has been done, and neither did the Streib. They didn't exactly know the reason for the disappearance of their ship, and no other research teams were sent in the fifty years that followed, but the Streib were worried of the Orion Arm, and the inhabitants of the planet Earth, rumours had spread throughout their world of what might have happened to the twenty one members aboard the ship. But rumours were rumours, and not facts. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Just as the Streib closed themselves off from the rest of the galaxy, the Vorlon continued their observations. The Minbari had continued with their way of life long after Valen had disappeared. The Centauri were advancing into complicated factors now, having been capable of space travel for quite some time, they were now learning how to communicate and experimenting with ways to travel faster through space. The human's too, were capable of space travel, shortly after the Streib encounter, but as time grew on, it appeared that the human's lost interest in their space race, and hardly ventured outward, only to map their own world from orbit. In the mean time, several probes that were launched, years before, continued to travel throughout space, and some would be encountered by the other alien species of the galaxy, and prove to the human's that they were not alone. Although it was information that was known for quite sometime before by a select few people who were involved with Roswell 1947. The Narn continued to grow, and they began to read the book of G'Quan, a relic that was found in some ruins of the old Narn of centuries before. It told of a great war, far beyond anyone's understanding that was happening throughout the chaotic universe. Told of a great darkness that resided on Narn, and stayed out of the people's way as they wreaked destruction throughout. He also told of how they may return when the time is right, to finish what they never started... Each race grew at steady paces, and the Vorlon remained prepared for the time when the Centauri would finally reach their goal and 'accidentally' enter Hyperspace, for the time when the Human's would unite as one and venture further into the stars, when the Narn would learn the meanings of G'Quan's notes and when the League would begin to travel outward and join the others... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Soon enough, the Centauri punched their way into Hyperspace and ventured outward into the galaxy. Their souls filled with the thought of other races existing that were ready for conquest. They were soon disappointed when they made first contact with the all powerful Minbari, who showed the Centauri just who were the most powerful, and who shouldn't be taken lightly. In the early stages of the Centauri/Minbari 'co-existence', several Centauri vessels were lost because their Captain's were too curious and would see if a Minbari vessel could be defeated. They found out that the Minbari could not be defeated under such circumstances, and so, the Centauri were given a final warning that any further aggression would result in absolute war. Soon enough, more races began to travel throughout space, but most only found how to gain entry to Hyperspace from the Minbari or the Centauri. The Minbari were more concerned with their religious traditions, and the Centauri were bent on conquest and bettering the Centauri people by making contact with the 'newcomers'. When the humans finally sent their first ship out to make first contact, they met the Centauri. Not knowing who they were, the humans started to answer favourably to the Centauri name, and became a more powerful race by grasping various technologies from the Centauri. They gained access to Hyperspace, and knowlegde of pulse weaponry that was being used more and more in small skirmishes of the smaller races. Being as curious as the humans were, people began worshipping the different religious icons of the Centauri people. In the meantime, the Minbari tried to keep as quiet as possible. Avoiding the humans at all costs, for everyone's safety... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the following years, the human's became a powerful race among the stars, and the Narn grasped the power to create vessels to explore throughout space. Little did they know, that space held great disappointment for them. Everyone would find out that space held a great disappointment, problem, or darkness that would weaken them all... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To Be Continued. Soon enough, Narn was covered with Centauri troops who would wreak havoc among the Narn homeworld. None of the Narn liked this, and so, they decided to fight back. The Centauri were far more powerful than the Narn, and made them pay for the mistake of revolting against what the Centauri justified as 'helping a primitive' culture. The Narn became slaves for the Centauri Republic, and the Centauri realised that they could probably continue conquering other worlds, just developing without too much hassle. They would find they were wrong... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It was decided to expand the great Centauri Republic across the stars, and anyone who stood in the way would be crushed by their forces. So, they targetted several small colonies just out of their border with the Minbari. It wasn't Minbari territory, so there was no need for a direct confrontation with Minbari forces, which would avert a war, and prove the Centauri to be a race that shoudn't be messed with. The Centauri fleet dropped out of Hyperspace and readied it's weapons, and ordered the inhabitants of the colonies to surrender. The colonists declined and were prepared to fight, but their forces weren't powerful enough to take out a single Centauri vessel, let alone a fleet of them. As time began to run out, the colonist vessels were crumbling, and the Centauri were preparing every last resource to take the planet, then, a single jump point opened, and Minbari vessels flooded into the area. "You have attacked a colony without provocation. These colonies are allied to the Minbari Federation, and you will pay for your mistake. As we warned you before, we will remind you again..." The Minbari cruisers shielded the remaining colonist vessels and opened fire on the Centauri fleet, it fell as quickly as it came, no ship was able to jump back to Centauri Prime. It was on that day, a lot of races learnt not to mess with the Minbari, and because of this, the Centauri would never attack a Minbari colony, or any colony near Minbari space, again... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Soon enough, the Earth Alliance had reached out into space and colonised Mars. The Earth Alliance fleet was borne with Centauri 'hand-me-downs' but lacked the technology of artificial gravity, instead, the continued to go as they used to in the 20th Century, until a method could be devised to create gravity, which would no doubt be required for long range missions. Following several scuffles along the way. The Earth Alliance fleet was large and powerful and deadly to it's opposition, and very quickly, the Hyperion class Heavy Cruiser had rolled off the line and entered service with the fleet as the main force. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Shortly after the long conflict between the Narn and the Centauri, the Centauri were driven away from Narn, giving the Narn people the technology to reach out into space with the ships that were abandoned by the Centauri. Soon enough, they too had the power to travel through the stars, and quickly adapted their vessels so they didn't look anything like the horror that once lived on their world. The Narn and the Human's were very young in space, and upon first contact with each other, not everything went well. Things worsened when the Narn discovered the negotiations between the Earth and Centauri Prime, and tried in ernest to persuade the Humans otherwise, but their minds were made up. Eventually, the humans became involved in a conflict with a race called the Dilgar. Spanning many years, the humans won, with the exception of one person, who would not get away with her crimes forever. Even if Deathwalker believed she was immortal, she wasn't... In light of the Dilgar Invasion, the Earth Alliance built a new class Dreadnought, the Nova, which was more heavily armed than the previous Hyperion, but costing more to build and operate at the time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It was a hazardous time for the Earth Alliance as following the Dilgar Invasion, much of the economy back home had crashed, and money was tight, even for military operations. It was a small expedition lead by the Prometheus that would throw Earth into great turmoil, and with a hasty alliance with the Soul Hunter's, the expedition set off for the unknown rims of space. Unto the darkness... Three ships travelled off into the night, their mission was a simple one, their result would be a catastrophic one... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This ends the second series of Agents Of The Dark, Alerted To A Presence. After all the previous centuries of war, finally was an era where everything seemed to go well. They had now ventured out into space and were exploring far beyond imagination. Their quests lead them to new worlds that could sustain life, and the first of these colonies was Mars, which was terraformed a few years back. Now, the Earth Alliance had continued to grow, and had evolved with technological advancement as well. Their greatest development was the Hyperion Class Heavy Cruiser. It was one of their first ships and handled itself well against the Dilgar during the war. Now, joining the Earth’s arsenal came a new ship. More heavily armed and more deadly to face. Since Earth had stretched it’s arms outward, these vessels were on the frontlines of everything that happened. It was three of these ships that would be the frontlines of everything to come" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "In all our times, we had respected the rituals of many castes. Most of the fleet comprised of the Hyperion Cruisers, but some expeditions included Nova Class Dreadnoughts, which were more heavily armed for head on confrontation in the event of meeting hostile craft. One such expedition, consisting of two Hyperions and a Nova had already made contact with a race known as Soul Hunters, and were continuing on their mission throughout uncharted space. Lead by the Prometheus, the mission had been successful from day one, but that was about to change... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * :: EAS Prometheus, Earth Year 2245 :: The night was always dark, but the Captain had thought by now that he would have gotten used to the continuous darkness of space. He enjoyed the thrill of being part of expanding Earth’s knowledge, but he really wanted to return home, to return to his family and tell them of what he had seen in the past years. Little did he know, he would never get that chance again" "Captain, we’ve detected several blips just out of sensor range. They’re on an intercept course, Sir." One of his bridge officers reported. "Okay. Any information on them?" he asked in return. "None, Sir." The reply came, "Should I open all channels of communication?" "Yes, all friendly greetings in all known languages." The Captain replied, "Notify the fleet of our situation." :: EAS Schwarzkopf :: Upon receiving the message regarding the Prometheus’ proposition, everyone aboard the Schwarzkopf was at ready status. The chances were more than probable that everyone else in the fleet would start relaxing, in the hope that the blips would take a long time to decipher the communications being sent, and so, they’d all take a rest. As for the Schwarzkopf crew, being the most heavily armed ship in the fleet, there was no such thing as relax. They had to be alert at all times" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * :: EAS Prometheus :: The blips hadn’t altered course and were continuing to an inevitable meeting with the Earth Alliance fleet. Everyone aboard thought it wouldn’t be any significant meeting, just like the previous contacts with other races, such as the Centauri. The only problem with the first contact with the Centauri was the constant urge for the human race to worship the Centauri Religions. Then there was the other races, but nothing particularly had gone wrong for the human’s, and nothing looked as though it would go wrong. "Communication Channels remain empty, Captain." The Communications Officer reported, "Nothing’s happening." "They might not understand our language. Or any of the greetings we’ve sent." The Captain said in return. "Be patient. What’s our ETA?" "Two hours." "Then, in two hours we will find out who they are." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Prometheus’ Captain remained on the bridge as the fleet continued toward the unknown ships. By order of the Schwarzkopf, all fighters were launched and were ordered to escort the cruisers, whilst the Soul Hunter’s vessels held back behind the fleet. "Sensors confirm, three unidentified ships are approaching. ETA, four minutes." Communications ordered. "Maintain course, make sure everyone knows what to do." The Captain replied. "No one opens fire unless the order is given from me." "Aye, Sir." Communications answered, "Relaying message." Some moments later, the first visuals of the unidentified ships appeared, and the Prometheus crew were in awe. Ships that were blue, large and extremely advanced by comparison to the Prometheus and the fleet. All scans revealed nothing as they couldn’t punch through the hulls of the other ships, but by visualisation, it was obvious that they carried a large number of people, or whatever they were" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "We have entered their sensor range, we have detected multiple scans from their ships, attempting to penetrate the hulls. They have been unsuccessful." "Any luck interpreting their language?" "None. I’m afraid we still don’t know who they are." "They are the humans." A third voice spoke out. "How do you know?" "I have been studying them. Those markings are human." "As per tradition of the Warrior Caste, we are approaching with gun ports open, a sign of strength and respect." Suddenly, they spot something disturbing" "In Valen’s name. Soul Hunters." The first remarked. "Soul Hunter’s are only ever present when there is great death!" "Close the gun ports!" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * :: EAS Prometheus :: "Sir, they’re approaching." An officer reported, "It appears that their gun ports are open." "What?" the Captain asked. "Confirmed." Came the reply, "Alien ships gunports are open." "They’re preparing to attack!" the first officer called. "Get me a channel to the forward battery controls!" the Captain ordered. "You’re online, Sir." Communications called. "Forward batteries, we have possible hostiles approaching with gun ports open, fire when given the command." The Captain’s voice filtered through the speakers. David prepared his hands to execute the firing pattern, he watched the large ships moving in closer to the Prometheus, so large, they filled his vision. "FIRE!" the Captain’s voice called. Several days following the attack, the Earth Alliance realised the very depth of their mistake as the first colonies began to fall... :: EAS Redeemer, Outer Colonies :: The days were very long on the edge of Alliance territory, but the pay was good. No one cared about where they were stationed out here. No one cared, mainly because no one had a reason to. Nothing ever happened on the rim colonies of the Alliance. As the Alliance continued to push on, and explore more territory to forever expand beyond the abyss, the rim colonies became lesser and lesser known. The small Hyperion ship was just on a routine supply mission, and had done no harm to anyone, but it was like all things, At the Wrong Place At the Wrong Time... "Sir, I’m picking up a disturbance. Jump Point forming." "One of ours?" the Captain asked intently. "I do not believe so Sir." The ships were unknown to the rim colonies, but everyone at Earthdome knew who they were, and how much of a threat they represented. What they neglected to do was inform any of the other ships out in space about the current situation at home. They were the same configuration as the ships encountered by the Prometheus, and the attack was swift and harmless, or so it seemed. The Redeemer fell, and then, so did the colony below her... It was just as swift as the first contact between Earth and Minbar... :: Earthdome, Geneva :: "The situation is worse than we thought." Offered one of the council. "Indeed, in only three months our forces have been reduced to three quarters." Offered another. "If this continues, we’ll be forced to surrender within a year." Came a reply, "All ships report that the enemy are using some kind of stealth technology, which blankets the ships from sensors and tracking systems." "Well, is there anything we can do?" the question came back. "I do not believe so..." and surrender became the only option... :: Outer Colonies :: Running for dear life, the small flight of Starfury’s continued toward the jump point, trying to get away from the enemy fighters, which, once again appeared from no where. Their main cruiser remained behind at the planet, possibly to destroy the colony, but the fighters had no chance against the cruiser, and so they ran. Now, out of the seven original fighters, three remain, and the jump gate seems to be so close, and yet so far. Each one being pursued by three weapons firing from each of their pursuers. Time was growing against them, and the jump gate was activating, but things were too fast, and the enemies shots destroyed the third Starfury. The vortex was now open and it appeared that escape was possible, and perhaps they could get reinforcements, but instead, upon entering Hyperspace, they ran into even more trouble... A fleet of ships so large, that the red of Hyperspace couldn’t be seen. Nothing had happened in the past few hours and there was still no word from the other Outer Colonies that should have reported in by now. With the continued patrols of the area and the other three Heavy Cruisers returning to Terriganas for resupply, tensions were growing high as the reality of a Minbari attack became more worrying. :: Barrakas System, Two Standard Hours From Terriganas IV :: With reports that the Earth Alliance were protecting Terriganas IV because it was a more likely target than Barrakas, everyone on the colony felt unsafe. There was one Hyperion cruiser on patrol in the area, with six Starfury’s. The Barrakas starbase had no fighter compliment and extremely limited defensive capabilities, and to evacuate the entire population would take over three hours at best. They were in absolutely no condition for an attack, so everyone hoped that the Earth Alliance was correct in their assumptions for Terriganas. :: Terriganas Starbase, Orbiting Terriganas IV :: The four ships had now all returned to Terriganas IV for resupply. The ships wouldn’t leave until morning now for their next patrol. It was so quiet out there. Since the war began, there had been no more freighters or transports in to the area by order of the Earth Alliance. It was a wise precaution. “Sir!” one of the bridge officers called. “What is it?” Captain Felding asked. “A message from Barrakas. Oh my God, the Minbari have attacked the colony!” “Notify the Wellington of the situation.” Felding ordered. “They already know, they’re heading for Barrakas immediately.” “Terriganas Base, this is the Wellington, we’ll leave the Hudson and Sahara here to protect you, we estimate it will take us 2 hours in normal space, so we’re risking a jump.” “Confirmed Wellington. Good Luck.” Felding said. “Order the Hudson and Sahara to be on standby, I want to be ready.” :: Barrakas System :: The jump point opened and the Wellington and two other Hyperion cruisers entered the Barrakas system. It was once lively and always bustling with traffic, but now it was dead. In orbit of Barrakas V were several ships. And they were easily recognised. “This is the Earth Alliance Dreadnought Wellington to enemy vessels, you are ordered to surrender yourselves or we will open fire.” The Earth ships grew closer to the Minbari cruisers in low orbit, the fighters took point, “Let’s hope we can use the planet’s gravity well against them.” “This is the Minbari fleet, you have committed acts of aggression against the Minbari Federation, for this we can never forgive, we will not surrender.” “Open fire!” The Wellington and the other cruisers slowed their approach as the fighters moved in for the kill. The Wellington opened fire on the Minbari cruisers which took no damage. “Sensors aren’t showing us anything!” Tactical called. “Give it your best shot!” :: Terriganas System :: What remained of Terriganas Starbase floated in front of the Hudson as it fired again toward the Minbari fleet. “We’re outnumbered five to one!” Tactical called. “Our best option is to retreat!” “No!” the Captain called, “What’s the situation with the Wellington?” “No response since 0400 Sir!” Tactical replied. “The Sahara just took another hit.” Several Starfury’s struck the Minbari fighters but to no avail. The Minbari fought with no mercy and didn’t give up until they were destroyed, which hardly ever happened. Several Starfury’s came around for a close pass on one of the Minbari Cruisers, but never reached their target as the Minbari fighters tore them from the sky. In the meantime, a flight of Minbari fighters swarmed in on the Sahara’s position. Fire spurted from the top of the Hyperion cruiser as the weapons penetrated the weakening hull. The Starfury’s protecting the Sahara were vanquished and the Sahara was engulfed in flames. None of the crewmembers were able to get to the escape pods in time. The Hudson was in no better shape, with her jump engines off line, it could only hope to await reinforcements from the Wellington. Their fighter cover was gone and the Minbari were punching holes all over the Hudson. It didn’t take long for the Hudson to erupt in flames either. :: Barrakas System :: The Minbari fleet passed the debris that read “WELLINGTON” and returned to Hyperspace. The Barrakas and Terriganas systems were theirs, and they were now ready to secure the next systems… TO BE CONTINUED… From: "Daniel Collins" Subject: Agents Of The Dark, The Holy War, 3.4 Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 18:07:43 +1000 ~ ~ ~ Agents Of The Dark ~ ~ ~ Series Three: The Holy War Part Four: Victory in the Dark By: Daniel Collins * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It was a fact that no one in the Earth Alliance could deny, and it was one they’d rather not face. It was a fact that the public knew, but were looking up to their ‘superiors’ for a reality check on the situation. Following the fall of so many colonies on the outskirts of Alliance territory and the destruction of so many starships, the truth of the matter was that the Earth Alliance was desperately losing the war. It was a time for some real victories or no support would come from anywhere. So far, the Narn had leant a helping hand to our aid, and their technology is yet to be tested, as for the fleet, we’ve been drawn back to our immediate neighbouring systems, the chances of hits to our most vital colonies, Proxima, Orion, Mars and eventually Earth are too high… * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * “In all our times, we had respected the rituals of many castes. They will pay for their mistake.” -Delenn, Member of the Grey Council. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The tactical display showed nothing but absolute bad news for the Earth Alliance and Sheridan threw it onto his desk in frustration. There was no way he could find to outfight the Minbari, and they were hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. The most frustrating part was that they couldn’t even detect the Minbari ships, so their weapons were useless, even before they were prepared to fire. Sheridan had stayed up most of the nights before this one, just to work out any way to defeat the Minbari, but continued coming up empty handed, and that was a challenge, but an annoyance at the same time. The Lexington, Sheridan’s ship had been on constant patrol in Sector 83 near Earth, there had been no activity whatsoever in the region, but the crew were sure that they were long overdue. “Captain Sheridan?” a voice called on his communicator. “Go ahead.” Sheridan said, getting out of his trance. “Sir, message from Earth Central, they’re ordering us to return to the Terran System to protect a convoy of ships in the area.” “Very well, jump when ready.” Sheridan replied. The Lexington turned away from its original course and entered hyperspace… * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * :: Terran System, Asteroid Belt :: One of the most dangerous regions of space in the Terran system was the Asteroid Belt which lay between Mars and Jupiter. The Earth Alliance must have been desperate to send a convoy of freighters through it. They’re supplies were simply medicines and doctors for the outer colonies and a few extra ‘surprises’ for the Earth Alliance ships in those areas. It would seem that the Narn technology had proven it’s worth… “…so we need this convoy to be protected at all costs Captain.” The Senator said over the viewer. “And if the Minbari do show up?” Sheridan asked. “Then may God help you. We’re stretched extremely thin now John. Most of our ships are on their way back to Earth, but we have to try and make it appear that we’re stronger than we actually are. This war is going extremely bad, so we have to try and do something before Earth falls into dust.” The Senator replied. “I understand.” Sheridan replied. “Sheridan out.” Great, the Lexington had been posted to convoy several freighters to the outer colonies, but the catch was that the Minbari might take this opportunity to attack them… But Sheridan had a plan… :: Three Hours Later, Asteroid Belt :: “Alpha One to Alpha Four, final charge in place, let’s head for the convoy.” “Roger that Alpha One, everyone else form up!” The six Starfury’s from the Lexington finished their little mission, as ordered by Captain Sheridan, and moved through the asteroid field toward the convoy of freighters. The Lexington was holding position on the opposite side of the asteroid field, in the hopes of boxing any Minbari forces in the middle. Sheridan entered the bridge, everything was standing by and everyone was ready for almost anything. The last Minbari attack in the area occurred two days ago, and was near Neptune, so the assumption was, that if word of this convoy got out, the chances of an all out attack would be almost certain. “How are the fighters doing?” Sheridan asked. “Alpha’s One and Four have deployed the final lot, they’re now moving toward the convoy.” Tactical replied. “Nothing unusual happening at the moment, Sir.” “I want to know the instant anything out of the ordinary happens.” Sheridan ordered. “Will do, Sir.” It was quiet from that point on. So quiet that the rumble of the engines could be heard, vibrating throughout the deckplates of the Lexington's bridge. Then, something broke the silence. “Jump point forming!” The crew looked out to see the jump point open and a fleet of Minbari ships flood into the system with weapons charged. “Stand by weapons!” Sheridan said. “Make every shot count. Notify Starfury’ s to remain with the convoy, but maintain military status.” “Aye, Sir.” The Minbari fleet continued toward the convoy, risking a journey into the asteroid belt to get close enough. Three cruisers were surrounded by at least 70 fighters which, as in all previous situations, outnumbered the Earth Alliance ships. The Lexington stood ready for anything… * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The tension mounted among the crew of the Lexington as Sheridan, their Captain sat ready with the controls which had enough power to send several Earth cruisers to Hell and back. The Minbari cruisers continued on their advance, and weren’t in any hurry, they carefully avoided the asteroid’s, but some of the ships were riding pretty close to them, which was made to Sheridan’s advantage. “Prepare a distress call for the enemy.” Sheridan ordered. “I have a little plan for them…” :: Half an hour Later :: “Are they in range of any of our asteroids?” Sheridan asked. “Nearly, Sir.” Tactical reported, “Three of their main cruisers are nearing one, three and seven. About ten seconds remaining.” “Good. Inform me of when.” Sheridan replied, returning his gaze to his screen. He focussed on the three cruisers which were in the middle of the fleet. “Sir, they’re in range!” Tactical called. Sheridan flicked the first control switch. “See you in Hell!” he said. Within seconds of his action, an asteroid near one of the Minbari cruiser’s exploded in a nuclear explosion which blinded everything in the area for a split second. Sheridan flicked the second control. The first cruiser was heavily damaged and spinning out of control towards the other two, which were trying to maneuver out of the way. A second asteroid near them exploded and destroyed the second cruiser. Sheridan hit the final control. A third asteroid exploded and took out the remains of the three cruisers. All gone, the fighters were without a base to return to, and they were pretty angry… TO BE CONTINUED… In light of the first victory of the Earth-Minbari War, will the victor, John Sheridan and his ship, the EAS Lexington be able to return to Earthdome to tell the tale? The Lexington’s turret’s turned toward the Minbari fighters and fired out into the night. The volleys of weaponry seemed to spread out into space, flying nowhere in particular, but hoping to hit something in the end. “We still can’t detect them.” Tactical said. “I don’t care,” Sheridan said with determination. “Continued firing til you hit something, then fire More!” The Lexington was firing everything it had, and was doing a decent job of keeping the Minbari fighters away from the Lexington’s fighter screen. Finally, some explosions among the Minbari fleet saw another victory. That not all Minbari ships are indestructible. “Sir, several Minbari fighters have been destroyed. Others are coming in closer.” Tactical reported. “Alpha Four is reporting heavy fire and requesting assistance.” There were at least fourty Minbari fighters still out there, and with six Starfury’s against them, the Lexington was living a short lived victorious battle. The Lexington’s weapons continued to fire out into nowhere, occasionally striking several asteroids, and occasionally striking some fighters. “Can we use any mines?” Sheridan asked. “Negative, Sir.” Tactical replied. “The fighters are out of their range.” “Damn!” Sheridan said. “Hit number Two anyway.” The Minbari fighters grew closer to the Lexington and were firing with rage. The Lexington was beginning to take some visible damage as the fighters got closer, then another one of the asteroid’s exploded with nuclear force and it’s debris began to float outward toward the Minbari fighters. “Sir, jump point forming! Range, 200 kilometres!” Tactical called across the bridge. “Show me!” Sheridan said, getting out of his seat to see. “This is the Earth Alliance Destroyer Washington to Lexington, need a little help?” “Washington, confirmed, you wouldn’t mind taking out a few Minbari pests would you?” Sheridan asked in relief that it was an Earthforce ship. “No worries Captain.” The Washington came in with guns blazing. It was impressive as the new ship, with a rotational section began to take out the Minbari fighters. Sheridan noticed that they were still having trouble hitting all of the fighters though, meaning that their sensors were still inadequate for the task... The Washington and the Lexington closed the gap and took out the remaining fighters with a lot of shots wasted into space. "Notify the other ships to retreat, we'll hold the fort here as long as we can. How many more civilians have to leave the colony?" the Captain asked. "Two more shuttles and that's it." Tactical replied. "Sir, distress call from the Farlin." "This is the EAS Farlin85we're taking heavy damage, require immediate assistance85" "We've lost her. The Minbari damaged her too much." "Best speed outa here!" The Achilles turned away from it's enemies and entered Hyperspace, another Earth Alliance system fallen to the Minbari85 The Achilles Captain sat in his ready room and looked gloomily out the window into Hyperspace. He had come to the conclusion, like many other Earth Alliance Captain's, that there was no way in hell that they could win against the Minbari, short of a miracle, the human race would be gone by this time next year85 "Sir." The Communications officer called over the speaker's, "Message from Earthdome." "Put it through." "Captain, this is a general message to all Earth Alliance starships, you are being recalled to the Proxima and Beta Eridani Systems immediately. The Minbari have broken through the lines outside these systems, and these must be protected at all costs." "What about Earth?" "We're constructing a second fleet as we speak, but things look grim. The first fleet's at Proxima III and Beta Eridani are ultimately our last best hope85" The Senator's image faded. "Set course for Proxima III." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the meantime, whilst the fleets above Earth, Proxima III and Beta Eridani were being constructed, Earthdome was in bad shape. With the Martian colonies withdrawing support from Earth because of the war and the lack of knowledge of the Minbari from many resources, the Alliance had almost no clue as to what exactly they were fighting. Everyone knew one thing. They were fighting a hopeless battle85 :: Proxima III, Earth Colony :: Minute after minute, jump points would form in the fiery nebula surrounding Proxima III. Earthforce Destroyer's, Dreadnought's, Heavy Cruisers and ships of all sorts jumped into the systems constructing the fleet to stop the Minbari dead in their tracks. An almost impossible task. Among the ships, were some 30 Nova Dreadnoughts, 46 Hyperion Cruisers and several of the new Omega class Destroyer's including the EAS Achilles. "What's the enemies ETA?" Achilles' Captain asked. "According to our Hyperspace probes, could be a while, they haven't turned up anything." Tactical reported. More ships continued to enter the system, including the EAS Lexington under the command of the now famous John Sheridan. The entire area of space around Proxima III was covered by an Earthforce ship, but somehow, it didn't seem enough, because the other half of the fleet were doing exactly the same thing, but at a different place85 :: Beta Eridani, Earth Colony :: Similar to Proxima III, the Beta Eridani system was also flooded with Earth Alliance ships of all kinds. It was now a waiting game of which system would be hit first85 TO BE CONTINUED85 Undoubtedly, the end of the human race dawns, but what will happen and cause the Minbari to rethink their strategies? Even though Mars had withdrawn from the war, it was in no safer condition 96 it's colonists were after all, human85 ::Fleet Command, EAS Titan:: "Sensors haven't picked up anything." Tactical called. The viewer activated to show at least six jump points form and the area of space in front of the Beta Eridani fleet was filled with Minbari ships. "Notify the fleet to prepare all weapons!" Tyrell called. "Aye, Sir. Fleet notified." Tactical replied. "Weapons standing by." "Target the lead ships," Tyrell ordered, "move us in closer and make every shot count." The Titan and the fleet powered away from the planet Beta Eridani and toward the deadly Minbari fleet, outnumbered on a three to one basis, the Titan made the first move and opened fire85 ::Proxima III:: The Lexington had taken command of the Proxima III fleet against the Minbari. There were at least 15,000 ships in this fleet, and that was only because Proxima III was an easier system to get to for most of the other ships. "Report?" Sheridan asked. "Nothing happening here." Tactical responded, "We've got a message coming through." "Let's hear it." Sheridan acknowledged. But do you know how many ships we have committed to this invasion? How many lives?" She asked in return, her advisor shrugged. "There were 12,000 ships at Beta Eridani, there are now 15,000 at Proxima III 96 two of our most important colonies, and yet, Beta Eridani is falling. And how many have we committed to Earth? Over 53,000 ships are up there, up there in orbit, and I fear, that they might all be waiting for death85" "Whatever happens, Madam President, I'm sure you have done your best for the Earth Alliance and her people, and no one will ever forget that." "Will they?" she asked, "How can anyone remember a race that is dead?" ::Beta Eridani:: The many swarming Starfury's continued on their advance toward the Minbari fighters that were fierce and strong. Fighting in their earnest to at least kill some Minbari, the Earthforce pilots were quickly picked from the stars, and another wave of fighters would come again to try their luck. The cruisers held back, trying to get their long range weapons in for a better shot, but it proved useless as each cruiser, just like the fighters, were going down, one at a time. "We've just lost the Magenta and the Ares." Tactical called. "Engineering reports the engines are nearing critical." "Continue bringing us in closer to the Minbari forces." Tyrell called. The Titan's engines were showing their age as she continued toward the Minbari cruisers, several Nova's gave cover fire to get her in closer. Dreadnought's Buran and Challenger are now closing in on our position." Tactical said, "Communication from the Buran." "This is the Buran to Titan, make your run, we'll give cover fire." "Sir, the Dreadnought's Endeavour and Mir have also closed in on our position." "Four ships to get One ship through." Tyrell said. "Do it!" The Titan powered to full afterburn and the four support vessels closed in, making a wedge toward the Minbari fleet. The Minbari cruisers fired toward them, but the Nova's wouldn't give up easily, firing every last ounce of weaponry they had left. The Minbari forces took no damage, and returned fire, taking the Mir with it. "Notify the fleet, all ships concentrate on their forward lines." Tyrell called. As the Titan and the three Nova's continued on their run toward the Minbari fleet, several Heavy Cruisers concentrated all of their fire onto one point on one of the forward Minbari cruisers, and for a brief moment, it appeared to take damage, but when it return fire with full guns, they knew they weren 't successful. The Titan had made it through the front lines, and only just, with the Buran being the only support vessel left, both ships fired into the rear of the same Minbari cruiser. The combined power of the Titan, Buran and the remaining 8,000 ships did a lot of damage to the Minbari cruiser, but it wasn't enough. It took a small squadron of fighters to wipe out the Buran before it fired another round of weapons, and the Titan was on it's own. All Alone. "Report?" Tyrell called across a bridge engulfed in smoke and fire. "Weapons are gone, primary systems are hit, we can't take another hit like that." Tactical called desperately, hoping it would all end. "Status of the enemy?" "68% damage to outer hull, sensors can't penetrate through that." Tactical struggled to get back to his seat. "It could be a false readout, but85" The Titan shuddered under another volley of weapons fire. Tyrell thought all the possibilities through his mind. "Sir, structural integrity is about to give way." "I know, give me all the power to the engines and prepare to ram them." Tyrell ordered. "Aye, Sir." Tactical replied. Not quite the ending he was hoping for, but now, it was all that was left to do. Another volley screeched through the ship's hull, but the Titan continued toward its target, slowly, and ever so carefully. As it impacted, the Titan erupted along the hull of the Minbari cruiser and exploded. The Minbari cruiser began to show signs of damage and fire exploded out of the hole the Titan had just made, the cruiser soon after exploded in flames, but it was one in thousands. By this time, the fleet had been compromised too much. There were only 900 ships remaining, and none of them were in top fighting condition. Those who could, retreated from the system, hoping to find refuge somewhere else. The brave, jumped for Proxima III, in the hopes that they could replenish their systems and prepare for another battle, with more ships, the foolish, remained behind at Beta Eridani and stood their ground. It could've been heroic, to allow escape for those leaving. But the Minbari offered no mercy, and wiped the ships from the skies like trees in fire85 ::Proxima III, Fleet Command, EAS Lexington :: "Sir, the fleet at Beta Eridani has fallen." "It has?" Sheridan asked. "Yes, reports show that remaining vessels are retreating to Proxima III and the Terran System. Why?" "Those retreating here want enough time to replenish themselves for the next battle. They probably also hope that our fleet, having more ships, will have more chance in stopping the Minbari advance. Those heading for Earth, are probably in no shape for a battle, or need major repairs before they join the final fleet of ships at Earth85 It's going to be a very bad day," Sheridan said. But already, one fleet had fallen and disproved that point, and the chances of the fall of Proxima III were now very high. Madam President of the Earth Alliance sat, looking out toward the stars, trying to pick out which of the stars above her were her ships, and which were the stars. She was crying on the inside, almost sure that nothing could save the human race. No one, No thing, no ship, computer, weapon or anything. But she had no idea, that a 1,000 year old legacy, would have any affect whatsoever. All that mattered was the safety of the human population, to make sure that it continued on, and that meant that the civilian population of Earth, may have to look for a new home. Even Mars wouldn't be safe. "This is the President, I want a meeting of the Senators, high ranking officials and anyone who has a say, we have some very important business to discuss." Many of you have high ambitions about what you will want to do, and where you will want to be in five years time. But the reality is, that there is a high chance that none of you will return from this mission. I know that may sound strange, but this final battle is the only thing that will keep the Minbari away from Earth, and above all else, your duty is to the protection of Earth, to fight for Earth. Unfortunately, that time is now, and the lives of many civilians on Earth depend upon this battle." "We've strung together three of the largest fleets ever assembled - one was at Beta Eridani, the other at Proxima III, and the final one would be at Earth. As you all know, the fleet at Beta Eridani was the smallest fleet, and it has fallen. The fleet at Proxima III is now engaged with the Minbari, and we suspect that the next target will be the Terran System, if not Earth itself. Remember what you are fighting for out there. We need everyone thinking straight, for this will be the largest battle ever recorded in Earth history, and we don't want it to be the one where Earth falls into darkness. I wish I had something more positive to say, except - Good Luck." With the Captain's finish, everyone in the Hangar applauded his speech, and he stepped away to command the Hastings. The fighter pilots quickly scrambled to their lockers and prepared themselves for the battle that was to come... :: Proxima III :: "Main power's just gone offline!" Operations reported, "We're about to lose engine power!" "Sir," Tactical called, "I believe we've punched through some of their forward lines." "Good!" Sheridan called, "Notify all ships to aim their weapons at the ships around that hole!" "Sir, we've just lost the Magellan and the Farragut, Minbari forces are closing on our forward lines." The Earth Alliance fleet was slowly being crushed as the Minbari ships continued advancing. Each one was picking out an Earth ship and quickly moving onto the next. Starfury's swarmed in their numbers on Minbari targets, but were quickly taken out by the Minbari. Destroyer's, Cruiser's, Gunships and Dreadnought's were all being blown away with the fewest shots, but the humans continued fighting. :: The Forgotten Place :: Whilst all the fighting between the Humans and the Minbari continued, and all the other worlds watched as the Human race neared extinction, the long forgotten race that had been banished for so long returned to the place that was once theirs... Z'HA'DUM... :: Earth Orbit :: Sinclair looked out of his cockpit, his view was covered with Earth Alliance ships, all ready for the almost inevitable battle that lay ahead. He felt the realisation that no one was likely to return from this battle, so he took the time to take in his surroundings. The planet Earth behind him, the people he loved, on their way to safety, or fighting along side him. His work, and his life in front of him. His enemy, on it's way - and that same enemy, would destroy everything around him. Nothing would be the same. Never again... His Starfury lay in formation with the other five from the Hastings. They were providing escort for the Hastings, which was toward the rear of the entire fleet, which was better known as The Line. It was appropriately named, a Line to hold the enemy out. But would it? Many walls had fallen before, and so had many lines - perhaps this would be just the same. In all his negativity, Sinclair came back to reality and tried to make peace with himself one more time before the battle... :: Proxima III :: As the jump point closed, all that remained of the Proxima Fleet was debris, floating through space. Dead bodies, and most of the Earth Alliance fleet above the planet. In the midst of it all, a battered Lexington and several other ships that made it out, in one or more pieces, still managed to be operating, but barely... "Report?" Sheridan asked, hoping that one of his bridge crew would reply - there was no response, at first. "Report?" "The Minbari fleet has withdrawn from the system, Sir." Tactical reported, getting to his knees. "Why are we still alive?" "I wish I knew. It could mean that they had no interest in Proxima III." Sheridan replied. "Or they recognised us as a force not to be screwed with." "No. We were falling quickly," Sheridan said, "I'll bet there's only two or three other ships in our situation out there. They must have received orders to retreat. There must be something bigger on their minds..." "Something bigger?" Tactical asked. "Earth..." Sheridan replied. "This is the end." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TO BE CONTINUED... The Minbari fleet had left, but among the wreckage of the thousands of Earth Alliance ships that were above Proxima III, they also left several ships that weren't destroyed. The Lexington had already managed to communicate to the Perseus and the Trafalgar, so things were looking up - a bit at least. In the meantime, Sheridan couldn't help but wonder where the Minbari fleet was now... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Three cycles since the war had started, and our fighting has brought us to a turning point. We are ready to strike them down, And finally our revenge will be complete..." -Delenn, Member of the Grey Council. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * :: Jupiter Outpost Five, Terran System :: "Sir, one of our Hyperspace Probes has picked up an extremely large disturbance nearby, it appears to be a congregation of ships waiting in Hyperspace." Communications reported. "Anything else?" the Officer on duty asked. "Not that I can see." Came the reply, "It's getting closer though." "Standby on Yellow Alert, notify everyone onboard and in the area." "Aye, Sir!" :: EAS Celestia :: "A report from Jupiter Outpost Five, Sir." "What is it?" asked the Captain. "They say that some Hyperspace probes have picked up an extremely large disturbance in Hyperspace. Wants to let everyone in the vacinity know." "Keep your eyes open. If it is the enemy, we're the ones who'll have to warn the fleet." :: EAS Hastings, High Earth Orbit :: The many Starfuries and other ships of The Line swarmed the area with regular fly-by's and routine patrols. The Hastings just stood ready with the other fleet ships. With the warnings from Jupiter and the Celestia, everyone started to become tense. The evacuation of the Earth population was still in its early stages, and the President had requested to stay behind on Earth. The news of the fall of Proxima III rode quickly back to Earth, and so, everything Earth stood for, was now left to this final act of desperation. The Line... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ::EAS Celestia:: "Earthforce has acknowledged our signal. They're notifying us to maintain our patrol near the Jupiter jump gate." "Acknowledge their signal, maintain patrol." The Captain ordered. "Sir!" Tactical called urgently, "Jump points forming! Bearing 121, Mark 355!" The Celestia was suddenly overwhelmed by at least ten jump points opening nearby, each jump point revealing hundreds of Minbari warships and fighters entering the Terran System. "Send a message to the fleet, we must warn them!" The Minbari fleet continued pouring out of Hyperspace. As they approached the Celestia, they opened fire and tore the ship apart as they continued at full speed toward Jupiter... ::High Earth Orbit:: Sinclair stood ready in his Starfury. The tension was mounting as everyone began to wait for the inevitable confrontation. Sweat pouring from his head, all he could do was routine maintenance checks on his ship to make sure everything was working properly. "Perimeter Alert!" a voice came through his communication channel, "The Minbari fleet has entered the Terran system at Jupiter. Repeat, enemy fleet now at Jupiter." :: Jupiter :: Jump points continued opening and thousands of Minbari ships continued to jump from hyperspace. Most of the area around Jupiter was now filled with Minbari ships, all of them, looking for the next target. All of them ready to engage in the final battle or revenge. The main Jupiter transfer station was the first target for the advancing fleet, every available Starfury was destroyed in seconds and the station, with over 500 crewmembers onboard soon followed. Then the Minbari fleet re-entered hyperspace... ::High Earth Orbit:: With the final report from Jupiter just in, the President ordered the Line to engage any hostile vessels. She also informed the fleet to monitor communication channels on Earth for the President's speech. Everyone in the Line awaited the Minbari fleet. Now they were within the Terran system, it seemed highly unlikely that they'd withdraw any time soon. With what was retrievable from the reports from Jupiter, it also appeared that the Minbari outnumber even the Line. An hour later, everyone on Earth gathered to see the monitors as Madam President of the Earth Alliance prepared to make her speech. She approached the stand and was extremely nervous at this time. "People of Earth." She started, "It has been three years since the declaration of war against the formidable Minbari Federation. In that time, we have tried to stand our ground - we have tried to live on - tried to continue being human. In those three years, we have lost a lot of good men and women in the worst interstellar confrontation known to us, since the Dilgar war so long ago. Our prayers and our thoughts go to the families of those who have died fighting for what we hold so dear. "At this time, the death toll on our side is too high to count, and it is a truth that the damage done to the enemy has been negligible at best. With every one victory we seem to score, the enemy come back and kick us hard. It is now well known that the war is going extremely badly, and within the next few hours, we will see what may be left of the human race... "In these final and desperate times of war, we have assembled the largest congregation of ships above us. Up there, in orbit awaits 20,000 Earth Alliance ships of every kind. Every ship we could spare is up there. Every ship up there represents us. I hope you'll support them fully in the final hours of war. "Our fleets at Proxima III and Beta Eridani have now fallen, and our last hope for winning this war is above us. If the Line falls, then Earth falls - even when we believe that we will go on. Many of us have left Earth to survive, and to continue. Some have gone to Mars, and others have gone to our allies elsewhere. But Mars may also be a targetted colony, even with its neutrality during this war. "We can only hope, that in these last hours, hope and faith will be on our side. Our best wishes go to the Line. Godspeed..." And so the President's speech ended... :: High Earth Orbit :: Sinclair reflected on the President's speech and closed his eyes. He knew just how bad the war was going, he was a soldier and it stuck with him every day. It stuck with everyone around him - every one of the twenty thousand ships, every one of the half a million lives that were up there with him - all knew how bad the war was. Extinction was a harsh word at the best of times, but it was shattering when it was used against your own species. For Sinclair, he could only close his eyes and wash out the thought. Of course, nothing lasts forever, and everyone was alerted by the flagship's call... "Red Alert! Jump point detected at Martian perimeter!" called the communications officer, "All ships standby, fighters prepare weapons." "Copy that." Came through as the main cruisers prepared their weapons, "Heat em up people!" squadron leaders called to the fighters, and Sinclair charged his weapons. As he looked around at The Line, other fighters prepared their weapons, and the defense grids along the hulls of the main cruisers came to life as the weapons were loaded for battle. :: Mars :: The Minbari fleet had quickly jumped out of hyperspace, and whether or not it was to scare those on Mars, the fleet had jumped right on top of the second moon. Either way, the people of Mars weren't taking any chances, and prepared all planetary defenses to fire at the first sign of trouble. Whatever the reasons were, the Minbari fleet turned away from Mars and powered at full speed toward Earth. With sighs of relief, Mars was saved, but it was only because it was time to end the Earth Minbari War once and for all. And with what they saw from Mars, The Line would be no problem for them... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * :: The Line :: As soon as the Minbari units came into weapons range, they fired at the Earth fleet. The first shots took out several smaller vessels, and the call was given to the other Earth ships. With the battle now in motion, the Line mobilised into its offensive formation, each ship returning fire with ferocity toward the Minbari forces. Every shot fired at the Minbari was either deflected or returned with triple the original force. It didn't take long for The Line to start falling. Several Heavy Cruisers had already erupted in flames, and several other ships were beginning to weaken. Entire fighter squadrons were wiped from the stars. Sinclair ordered his squadron to fall back a bit as he realised that the closer the fighters got, the more chance of being destroyed. He quickly maneuvered around exploding ships and prepared to fire again. Several explosions around him indicated another one of his ships had just gone down. "All ships concentrate fire on the lead ship." A plea from one of the Cruisers came in. "Confirmed." Echoed through the communication channels as several other ships from The Line moved towards the lead ship and fired. The problem was that the lead ship was well supported and any offense was destroyed within seconds. By now, things looked really bad. With hardly any scores for the Earth Alliance, and The Line now down to less than two thirds of what it was, everyone began to panic. :: Earthdome :: The President looked up at the sky. The fleet had moved further down in Earth orbit as explosions became more numerous and larger. She timed how long for each ship to explode, one...one...one...one... it was a continuous pattern that never stopped. Every second a ship was destroyed, and that was all she could see. A tear dropped from her eye as the battle continued to grow worse. :: The Line :: The battle had grown worse, as Sinclair's squadron was blown out of the stars, he was forced to make a plea for help. "This is Alpha One to any remaining Starfury's, form up if you can read me!" It took a while, but a half dozen Starfury's joined his formation. There weren't a lot of ships left as the Line continued to fall. The flagship was gone, and so was the Hastings. The Minbari had continued in their advance. "Computer, how many Earthforce Capital Ships remain?" Sinclair asked. "15, and falling at a rapid rate." Came the distressing and almost unwanted reply. "Any remaining Starfury's, form up, we have a job to do, let's do it for Earth." Sinclair called. Only a few more Starfury's joined up, and soon enough, Sinclair realised that there wasn't much hope in expecting a victory from any other squadron. Three more explosions indicated the end of the Line as the last capital ships were obliterated. Sinclair now had to make a decision. "Everyone stay in formation, we're going in." his squadron powered ahead for the Minbari fleet. It appeared that they were all that was left of the Earth Alliance. So they had to make the best of it. As Sinclair got closer to the Minbari cruisers, he saw several Starfury's still engaged in battle, in an attempt to get there in time to save them, he thrust his engines further. A signal from one of the Starfury's came through. "Alpha Seven, Alpha Leader I'm hit!" Sinclair called out, "Pull up pull up!" in desperation, but the pilot's Starfury was hit, and destroyed. "He's gone," one of his squadron called, "Picking up enemy transmissions." "Stay in formation, hold the Line, no one gets through no matter what." Sinclair ordered as the small squadron continued toward the battle fleet. "Alpha Leader, you have a Minbari on your tail!" a call came, Sinclair turned and saw a Minbari fighter firing at him. Reacting quickly, Sinclair maneuvered his fighter to get out of the Minbari weapons fire. "I'm on him." Called the same pilot. "Targetting fighter." He said. "No, wait." Sinclair cautioned, "it might be a, my God! It's a trap, Mitchell!" "I can take him, I can take him!" Mitchell said as his Starfury swung around and fired on a Minbari ship. His shots were away, but that was until a green beam of light struck his Starfury. "I'm hit! Ejecting!" Mitchell called, but it was too late, his Starfury exploded, and his ejection pod went down with it. Sinclair stood there, amazed and terrified. Now they were deep in the Minbari fleet, the Line had crumbled, this was all that was left, as Mitchell's helmet floated past Sinclair's Starfury. Sinclair looked around as green flashes started emitting from everywhere. Each one took out a Starfury. Everywhere he looked, an Earthforce fighter exploded. It was seconds before he realised that there weren't any fighters left in his squadron, and then his fighter was hit. He spun in what felt like free-fall for a time before he regained control of his fighter. The computer gave him several warnings, and Sinclair cursed the enemy, "Not like this, not like this! If I'm going down, I'm taking some of you bastards with me!" He looked ahead and a Minbari cruiser blocked his view. "Set for main cruiser, full velocity ram! Afterburners on my mark..." Sinclair said. :: The Grey Council :: "They fight even when they know they will lose." One of the nine said. "We should study their race for further information." Another suggested. "Then you'd better hurry, we are quickly running out of candidates." Said another. "That one!" pointed one of the Religious Caste, as an Earthforce fighter, standing alone was spinning out of control... ::Sinclair's Starfury:: "Mark!" the acceleration thrust Sinclair's head back into his seat as his ship careered toward the Minbari cruiser. It filled his viewscreen and grew larger and larger, and then there was a flash - and Sinclair blacked out. Upon his return to Earthdome, a whole 24 hours after his black out, Sinclair has realised that the war was over, and the Minbari had retreated from Terran space. No one understood it at the time, but everyone on Earth celebrated. The loss to the Earth Alliance fleet had been terrible, only a few ships were salvageable, the rest would remain adrift, or be collected for new parts. The new fleet would be better. It was the course of evolution. In light of the Minbari withdrawal, it prompted the start of a new project that would bring peace to the galaxy. After so much war, and so much hate, from the Dilgar War, to the Narn-Centauri War, to the Earth Minbari War, it was decided to create a place where everything could be sorted out, and everything could be done peacefully. It was only the beginning of a dream. But dreams do have a way of becoming true... And so ends this part of Agents of the Dark. Finally, the Earth Minbari confrontation has come to a close. In the next part of Agents Of The Dark, we go to the place that started everything in the future for Earth and many of the other races - we catch up on some old races that have remained quiet, and we find out a possible solution to a mystery that remains unsolved. Don't miss the next part of Agents Of The Dark...
