Failings of the Mother, Passed on by Generation by Meredith D. Holt beckihblumer@fuse.net Part 1- Enter the Lion John stared slack jawed at the dazzling woman in his office. The daughter of Zak Allan and Lyta Alexander? She did almost look like Lyta's twin. "Why didn't you tell us outright?" John asked, brows raised. "Because, I wanted to be judged on my own merit, and not because my parents happened to be the runaways of the century!" Eve exclaimed. A little dizzy, she sat down and put her head in her hands. "If you want me to resign, I understand..." she began. "No! You are the best secretary I ever had, I'd be a fool if I fired you." John told her hastily. Looking up, she smiled at him, and asked to be excused for the day. Fay Franklin had lived on Minbar for sixteen out of twenty five years of her life, and was very much at home among the crystal towers and waterfalls of Tuzenor, where her parents, twin sister and younger brother made their home. She was an interstellarly renowned gymnast, and had won four diamond metals on various worlds. Still, no place was home like Minbar. As she walked along the stone path that lead up to her huge home, her thick black hair swaying gently in the braid against her back, she thought of Marc Cole. She had loved Marcus Cole since she had turned five, and never spoken a word of it to him, nor any one else, save her twin sister Kathy. But she did suspect that three others knew of it. her mother, Eleen, her Aunt Aleia, and Marc's mother Susan. She sincerely hoped that one day, he'd love her the way she loved him. As she approached the door, a ranger stood aside to open it, and she gave a greatful smile. Instantly knowing where her father and sister would be, she ran down the hall to the lab. The sign on the door stated that today at least, they weren't working with anything really dangerous, so she opened the door. "Fay!" Stephen Franklin Sr. cried out as he gave his daughter a warm hug, "Welcome home, how long have you been back?" he asked. "About three hours, I decided to take a walk around the city." Fay told her father as she returned the hug, then embraced Kathy. Stephen Franklin Sr. looked on his two daughters with pride. Although twins, Kathy and Fay only resembled each other in features, both looking like molds of their mother. But Fay's coloring was that of her fathers, dark skin and hair, and dark eyes that sparkled like gems. Where as Kathy looked like a duplicate of his wife, short red hair, pale skin and freckles to spare, the only difference were her eyes. Not the dazzling emerald green Stephen had fallen for twenty seven years ago, but deep black like his and Fay's. His revere was interrupted as Kathy asked; "How long will you be staying, Fay?" "Oh, the next competition is going to be held here, so at least for the next six months. My new tour to Earth is next year, so I'll get a nice break after the upcoming trial." Fay said happily. The rest of the afternoon was spent discussing what Fay had missed. Including her younger brother, Stephen Jr's, recent discovery for a new cure to Lake's Syndrome. Sometimes Fay felt bad, she was the only one in the family who hadn't taken up medicine. Eve Alexander Allan smiled at her dinner companion, Marc Cole. He was a nice young man, whom she liked greatly. But only as a friend. "Eve," Marc said with a smiled before he asked, "Would you like to go to dinner with me tomorrow, again?" "Yes, Marc, I would." she smiled back. Just then, a young dark woman walked over to their table. She was perhaps a few years older then Eve, and was being followed by a young red headed woman. Marc smiled as they came over and invited them to sit down. "Eve," he said, "These are Fay and Kathy Franklin, very close friends of the family. Fay, Kathy, this is Eve Allan." he smiled. Eve was glad she had told Marc, it made things so much easier between them. Kathy smiled at her sincerely, but Fay's held malice behind it. Eve touched her mind. She, this girl, was in LOVE with Marc! Eve thought. "So, Eve." it was Fay, "How long have you known our Marc?" "Oh, only a few weeks, he got me a job with President Sheridan." Eve said, smiling. Fay didn't smile back. Fay thought furiously. "Marc," Kathy addressed her friend, "Did you hear that Fay won a Ruby medal at that Drosi competition last week?" "Really, that's smashing, Fay!" Marc exclaimed, "Waiter," he called out, "Some wine for my friends and I. Now we really have something to celebrate!" Eve thought. Fay went straight to bed when she got home, ignoring her mother's concern and pleading a mild head ache for the pace of the day. She sat by her window and gazed out at the Minbari night. How many times had she wished on stars that Marc would fall in love with HER. Who did this Eve girl think she was! That she could just waltz in here and take Marc! Life wasn't fair! The next day, Fay and her mother, Eleen, went to visit Eleen's 'sister' (only by adoption) Aleia. She had invited Susan Ivonava and Delenn as well, but Susan, being the Vice President of the interstellar Alliance had to be late. But Delenn would be there when Eleen and Fay arrived. They chated a while about upcoming holiday's and birthday's, as well as the upcoming marriage of Delenn's son David, to Aleia's daughter Estara. After a time, the door bell rang. It was Marc, come to say that his mother wouldn't be able to make it due to unexpected meetings. "Marc, can I speak with you?" Fay asked as she stood up. "Sure." They went into the other room. "Would you come to my competition on Saturday?" Fay asked, eyes downcast. "Of course, but can Eve come as well, I promised her dinner and if I cancel, I'll feel bad." he said as if it were no big deal. Suddenly, it was too much for Fay to bare, all those times she had dome things for him, secretly hoping that one day he'd love her back, and now, he only though of Eve? With a whimper, she dashed from the room in a fit of tears. Marc ran after her as she burst through the room where Eleen, Aleia and Delenn were and out into the gardens. "What'd I do?" he asked, confused. The two women who and know about Fay's attachments, as well as Delenn, only ran out after her as she disappeared in the heat of the Minbari Day. Fay ran as fast as she could, as if putting some physical distance between her and Marc could separate her from her emotions. When she looked around, she realized that she was at Crystal Falls, her favorite spot on Minbar. Some one else was there too, it was Eve. The last person she needed to see. As the gorgeous red head turned around, Fay seemed ready to flee. "I'm sorry, Fay" Eve said in a quiet voice. "Sorry for what!?" Fay asked, her anger growing, "Sorry for stealing the only man who ever ment a damn to me!? Sorry for ruining everything?!" "No, sorry for not seeing what he felt for me sooner, so I could put a stop to it!" Eve said heatedly. "What?" Fay didn't believe her ears. "Marc may think he loves me, but I'm not what he thinks I am. I'm going home, very soon. You, Fay, you deserve some happiness, and you deserve Marc. Like I said, I'm sorry." Eve told her as she put a hand on her shoulder. At that moment, Marc rounded the bend and saw Fay and Eve there. "What's going on you two?" Marc asked, confused. "Nothing." Fay said and she ran once more. This time, she headed in the direction of her home, and the solace she might find there. "Marc, how could you!" Eve asked. "What did I do, I only asked if you could come with me to her competition!" Marc said, tears welling up. "Marc, she loves you. She always has." Eve told him, and he looked at her in confusion. "But I love YOU, Eve!" Marc said as he tried to hold her. "No!" Eve said as she backed away. "No, you don't. You don't know me at all. Marc, I am part Vorlon. I'll never be able to have a baby, and I'm not compatible with you! The rest of my sisters are like normal humans. But me? No. Kosh helped make me." Eve turned away in shame. Marc started to say something, but she interrupted. "Go Marc, just go!" Marc sat at home, contemplating his life, Eve, and Fay. When Marc was sixteen, he had fallen in love with a girl named Cole, who had been Aleia's eldest daughter. Cole had been a beautiful girl and she and Marc had loved each other very much. But Cole had problems. Mainly that her father, Lennier, and Michael Garibaldi hadn't gotten along very well. Before Cole ad been born, Michael had tried to rape her mother, while he was under the influence of Mr. Bester, and when that failed, he had a child produced from his and Aleia's DNA. That child was Jessica Garibaldi, and she was Cole half-sister. Even after he was freed from the influence, things had never been the same between Michael and Lennier. Cole felt this, and after Jessica ran off and joined Earth Force, Cole had run away also. Leaving Marc all alone. He had never thought he would love again. Some time around dawn, he got up, and showered, and got ready for the day. Eve and Marc rode to the competition in silence, and took their seats on either side of his sister Lucill once they reached the Arena. Near by, Aleia and Lennier, their children Estara, Yundel., as well as Stephen Sr, Eleen, and Kathy. Stephen Jr and Aleia's daughter Hannha sat in the row below. Finally, it was Fay's turn, and she approached the bar in her sleek lavender cat suit. The music of 'Fire bird' began to play, and she leapt into the air, flipping, and hitting the ground with each beat. As the Minbari flute struck up, she vaulted onto the bar, and twisted, swung four times and jumped to the next. She was perfect, and unknown to any one in the audience, she was crying. A tear landed on one of the bars, and lay there. As she flipped six more times, and landed her feet on the thin bar, she did a mid air cartwheel and grabbed the bar with tear on it. The wet made her hand slip, and from the six foot height where she swung, she gasped and fell. Time stood still as the audience watched her land with a thud on the all too thin mat. "NOOOOO!" Marc cried out, but it was too late. The Minbari doctors rushed to the scene, and Eleen buried her face against her husband's chest. Kathy's scream echoed in the stillness that prevailed. Would Fay Live or die? Only time would tell. Marc collapsed against his strong sister as the doctors carried his Fay out into the Minbari night.
