Failings of the Mother, passed on by Generation By Meredith D. Holt beckihblumer@fuse.net "There is something in the stars, We know who we are, Lets go find out! What more can we do, Its only me and you, Lets go see what its all about" - Hannha Holt-Stargate: Aleia &Lennier's Daughter, "Star Seeker" at a concert on Mimbari, 2285 Prolouge- "Star Seeker"- Babylon 5, 2263 *Come on!* the excited voice of Lyta Alexander echoed in Zak Allan's mind. He had to admit, a year ago, he would not have been up to this, leaving Babylon 5 and all, so aruptly, without telling anyone. He thought of his resignation, along with the letter to the President, Michael and Delenn, all sitting on his desk, waiting to be discovered in the morning. Hell, a year ago, he wouldn't have known how Lyta felt, which after finding out had made it easier for him to confess how he felt to her. She made him feel alive in places and ways he didn't know existed, and now they were leaving, to go..out to the stars. The hussle and bussle of life in general had finally worm Zak down, and he was ready to just be alone with the woman he loved. As they walked toward the bay where their new ship was docked, he reached out to touch Lyta's red hair, which slipped like silk through his fingers. "You are SO beautiful." he told her, in a deep, husky voice. "Flaterer." she told him out loud, but rewarded him with a firm kiss, which seeped into his bones and his mind and body. He took in her attire as they finally reached to door and she punched in the access code. She wore a deep, dusty red velvet dress, which flowed freely to her knees, exposing the legs that he always found so amusing. She blushed deep red as she picked up his thoughts. He gave her the trade make, lopsided grin and she pulled him firmly toward the ship. Out there, among the vastness of space, they'd find their own place, alone. He didn't really mind, as long as she was with him. For four years he had watched her, wishing for her, never daring to even consider it might even happen, but, there it was, finally Zak had the desire of his heart. They walked on to the ship and Lyta took the seat by the pilots, which Zak so adiquatly filled. He asiciated launch sqence and reached for her hand, which was, as always, there for him. The door of the main docking area opened to reveal the stars they loved and together, they had no fear of being alone, because, they knew they never would be. __________ "And the Lord formed woman out the man's rib and he brought her to Adam . And then man said, here at last is one of my own kind, bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh...and her name was Eve."- Genisis 1:2: 23 Part 1-"And her name was Eve"-2264 A fresh cry rang from Lyta as yet another contraction ran its course. Zak wished Lyta would have let him take her some place, a minning colony, the closest out post, any place was better than them not knowing what they were doing and trying to deliver a baby. "I can see the head!" he cried out, hope and a bit of relie reached him as his hands reached in to cup the delicate head of the child within. He looked up to check on Lyta, who's eyes had been swallowed by her pupils. A stab of fear ripped his heart as he softly whispered to her it was okay. The child was almost all the way out now, a few more pushes and they'd be fine. Lyta screamed agian as the final contraction hit and the child sucked air into it's lungs for the first time. Lyta slumped into bed, but her smile was evident as she heard it's lusty criys. Zak wipped it off as best he could. "Its a girl!", he anounced triumphantly as he handed her to her mother. Lyta smiled softly and cooed to her in a gentle voice. "Whats her name?" Zak asked, comming to kneel beside his new family. "Eve. Eve Alexander Allan." Lyta replied, hopefully glancing at her husband. "I love you, Zak." she told him. "Love you too, Lyta." _________________ 2269 Five year old Eve sat on her Pappa's hip as they walked back towards the house. Zak had taken her to play in the creek while Lyta, pregnant with their fourth child, took a nap. Three year-old Crystal tottled along beside him and Zak balanced two year-old Raven on his other hip. He smiled, they were HIS girls and he loved them dearly. In five years they had gotten very used to living on their world, a planet with no name, but that which they called it: Eden. Crystal giggled, one mixed in coherantly with words as the approuched the large stone building Zak and Lyta had built after Eve was born, it had taken them along time, almost two years, but the ship they had lived on those years was still preserved for times when the weather was rough and the crops didn't harvest. It was during those times that Zak went to an out post or colony to buy food and get news. The most shocking news of late was the destruction of Babylon 5 by a terrorist attack. Zak did'nt feel guilty, but he was sorry to see it go. Eve jumped out of his arms and ran up the porch, pushing open the door and running up the steps to her parrents room where Lyta was asleep. Zak called to her to let her mother rest but then he saw Lyta, standing at the top of the steps, in her night robe, smilling down at him. "Hello, Love!" he called out to her. She smiled and scouped Eve up into her arms as she went down the steps. "Dinner's on the table, Kids." she told them. Eve and Crystal scrambled to the kitchen for the food, Raven squeeling and tottering after them . Zak smiled to his wife and she walked into his open arms and together they went to eat with their children. _________________ "Crystal! Brooke! Butterfly! Teal!" Eve called into the high wind as the storm clouds loomed above her. At fourteen her long red hair tangled in the hash winds of the high plains where her younger sisters had been playing earlier. She picked up a rather unwilling three year-old Orchid in her arms as she dashed over the hills. She needed to find her sisters before the storm hit. She never should have let Brooke and Butterfly and her other sisters go like that during this season. But she had been so preoccupied with helping mom harvest the strawberries from the garden that she had just told them to go. They probably thought it would be funny to hide from her, espeacially Teal, who at six, thought it was hillarious to do the exact oppisit of that which anyone older told her. Eve spotted them as Orchid began to cried, the wind stinging their eyes. Teal and Butterfly ran out of a thicket, each heading in a different direction. While frightened Butterfly ran over to Eve, ready to go home as the thunder in the distance could be heard, Teal dashed further off, daring Eve with her eyes to follow. "Teal Zakia Allan, get over here, NOW! That storm is gonna hit any minute, do you want to die out here?" Eve shouted at her sister. That got Teal's attention and she began to change direction. Eve heaved a sigh of relief as Crystal and Brooke relized this was no longer a game and broke into sprint with Eve to get back the house. Lyta was cooking in the kitchen when Eve and her band got back. Sitting Orchid down with the newest edition to the family, Zacharry, the only boy in the household, Eve went to help her mother in the kitchen. Brooke and Crystal ran off to find what Raven had been doing while they were gone and Teal plopped onto the couch for a little nap. Butterfly, always curious, went to the window to watch the storm. "Where's Pappa?" Eve asked her mother as she washed her hands. "He went to take a shower before dinner, honey." Lyta smiled at her mirror image daughter. The only noticeable difference between Lyta at that age and her daughter was the fact that although Lyta's eyes were a rich fawn brown, Eve's were a dazzling emerald that fashed with black ripples when she angered. Lyta smiled at her daughter, marveling how she helped out with her younger brother and sisters. Eve, first of her kind, was for once, more help than before. ________________ "Stars call to me, I can't say no, I need to explore my universe, have to see, I need to UNDERSTAND!" -Star Call- by Aleia Holt-Stargate Part 1- Star Call- 7 years later- 2285 "Are you sure you want to do this?" Lyta asked her eldest daughter, one last time as she stood before the gleaming new personal shuttle Zak had bought on his last run. Twenty one yearold Eve was leaving Eden, to go explore the universe her parents had left behind. "Yes, Momma. Look, I promise I'll be back, I just want to spend a few years out there, I can't stay away from Eden for long." Eve promised her mother. The rest of the girls looked at her with apprehenision and confusion. Butterfly's eyes were brimmed with tears and two year-old Star cried in her mother's arms. The youngest of the children, four year-old Tiger, three year-old Obsidion and three month old Rasberry wailed or called out in constant questioning as to why she had to leave. Eve gazed out on her family and wished them all good bye before she planted a kiss on Rasberry's peach fuz hair and pecking her mother on the cheek, her father clasped her in a warm bear hug and she finally turned to leave. "Wait, Eve!" Butterfly called out her. Eve turned and Orchid ran up the ramp to deliver something the older girls had made for her. It was a small, river smoothed Star Saphire in a bed of old silk. "Thank you, all of you." Eve said with tears in her eyes, "I love you, be back soon." she told them as she walked up the ramp and they scattered for her to lift off. ___________ Eve disembarked her shuttle, which she named "Eden's Remeberance", at a personal dock she had retented on a loan. Her tall figure and graceful carrige attacked some attention from the porters, who took her form in. She wore her long red hair in a loose twist which complimented a simple, lavander jumpsuit. With her one piece of luggage, she went to the regestry office to get an identicard under an assumed name. It wouldn't do for everyone to know that she was the daughter of the runaway Lyta Alexander and Zak Allan. After passing through customs, and headed for the shuttle dock which would take her to the Ranger compound. As she took her seat on the transport she gazed around her. Her composiur was cracking, she had never known such a busseling place with so many strangers that overwhelmed her mind with their stray, loud thoughts. Her mother had tought her how to block thank goodness, but it was still a strain. A young, continental looking man took the seat beside her as the shuttle began to lift. He wore a Ranger's uniform, the one her mother had told her about, instructing her to treat them with respect. This one seemed barely a year or so older than she. "Allo!" he greeted her cheerfully, "I'm Marc Cole." "Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Cole, I'm Eve Al.." here she stumbled, almost failing to remember her assumed name. "Eve Failings.' She told him, hoping he didn't notice her slip. He seemed not to as he continued on. "Please, call me Marc, everybody does." he asked her. "Than you must call me Eve." she told him, glad she wouldn't have to remember around him. "So, where you off to?" he asked her. "Oh, I'm going to the Ranger Compound, I'm hoping to get a job as a telepath there, I'm pretty strong, I'm a P12." she told him. Actualy, it was a bit of a lie, she was strong, off the human scale actually. Using the Vorlon scale she was a P19. He seemed to think on this. "President Sheridan is looking for an assiantant who is a telepath." Marc informed her. "Really?" Eve squeaked. A job working for a close friend of Mother and Father's? It COULD work, but she'd have to be careful. "Yeah, would you be interested? You see, the President is my uncle." Marc informed he with out any snobishness. "Why, yes, I would." Eve told him. The buzzer sounded for the Ranger compound and Eve disembarked. She waves to Marc as she left, his eyes following her lithe form of the shuttle with an enchanted expression. ___________ Eve was informed that she would not be able to meet with the recruting office until the following day, so she took the shuttle back to the main city to find a hotel. She passed by a nice one and stopped inside, registering her name and heading for a room on the third floor. So many new things here, even though her mother had told her what to expect, it was still rather unnerving. Looking at herself in the mirror, Lyta decided to invest some of her loan in some new clothes, so after unpacking, she headed for a shopping center. She walked for hours, finding a few nice outfits here and there. She also picked up some presents for her sisters: A pink fuzzy blanket for Rasberry, a teddy bear for Star, some blocks and soldiers for the boys and a comb, mirror and brush set for most of the older girls, along with some books and dolls. Tired and exilerhated, she stopped in a caf'e on her way home. As she went to the register, she heard a voice call out to her. "Eve!" it was Marc, sitting at a table by the window. "Fancy meeting you here!" he told her as she sat down. "Doing a little shopping?" he asked as he raised his eyes spectuativly at the shopping bags. "Yeah," Eve conceeded, "But not just for me, I picked up somethings for my brothers and sisters." "Really? Big familly?" he asked her. "Huge," she replied, "I have 10 sisters and 3 brothers." "Wow!" he told her. " I only have a sister, she's a year younger than me, her name is Lucill." "My closest sister is nineteen, two years younger than me, her name is Crystal." she told him, hoping she wasn't giving to much away. But after all, Marc was so kind. They talked some more, and Eve finally told him she was going to retire. When she got back to the hotel, there was an up linked message on her screen, she wondered who it was. It was in response to Marc's petition for her as an assiant to the President. They wanted to see her tomorrow morning. Both delighted and frightened, Eve took a quick shower and began to consider what to wear. Finally she decided on a deep emerald green dress. It was V necklined, with a long skirt, and a light, sea green cartigan to go over it. It had elbow legth gloves in emerald to match. She set things out and lay down on the bed. But she could not sleep. It was so odd not to hear Brooke's labored breathing, and Crystal's Vorlon murmurings across the room, or Raven toosing and turning, or Butterfly singing them to sleep, that Eve felt ill at ease. Finally she turned back on the lights and began to store all the things she had bought. At three in the morning she finally colasped into a chair, and awoke when her alarm sounded at seven. She dawned her outfit after a brisk shower, and swirled her long, red hair into a bun in the back of her head. With that, she picked up the new purse and walked out the door in the still dark hours of the Minbari morning. Taking the Shuttle to the Alliance head quarters, Eve sat and nervously awaited what fate would decree. Michael Garibaldi, head of Covert Intellegence for the Alliance met her at the door to President Sheridan's office. His distigushed figure stood out agianst the bustel is his dark brown suit. He noticed, the tall, elegant red-head in a striking emerald dress standing out agianst the crowd of rangers. "Miss!" he called out to her and her bright green eyes fastened on him. Eve nervously prepared her psyche as she aprouched him. She reached out an emerald gloved hand out to him with her fake identicard. He smiled lightly as he took it, ran it through his scanner and handed it back to her. "Hello Ms..." he let her supply. "Eve Failings." She told him with grace. His eyebrows raised slightly in question, but he noticed a brief wave of black wash over her eyes in an odd fashion. He opened the door and inside she saw President Sheridan stand up from his desk. "Hello, miss." he greeted her. "Greetings President Sheridan, I'm Eve Failings." she told him even more smoothly than before, she was getting that hang off this. John Sheridan could have sworn Eve was familiar, in fact, she brought him back to the day when a young telepath named Lyta Alexander had apeared on Babylon 5 to warn the command staff that one of them was a tratior. Eve picked this up as she casually scanned him, and a bit of fear stabbed into her heart. Meredith D. They had 10 daughters and 3 sons. Their eldest, Eve, has gone back to Minbari to explore the galaxy her parents left behind, leaving all of her sisters to miss her, espeacialy Butterfly. She has just taken a job as President Sheridan's aide. -------- Part 1-"Butterfly Dreams"-2285 Butterfly Allan's Diary- Dear Diary, Its been 9 days since Evy left. Mom was acting really funny this week, more so then would compensate for Eve being gone and Papa made her take the pregnancy test, even though she said that she was NOT pregnant. Turns out that she is. Mom and Papa are really happy. Mom just loves babies. Rassberry is still a baby, she is 8 months old this Tuesday. Everybody misses Eve, even Teal. Smoke and Zacharry got the flue because they fell in the creek when they were ice fishing. How do you do ice fishing in a creek? I'll never figure Zachy and Smoke out. Butterfly --------- Dear Diary, Papa is going to be leaving next week to get some supplies because the crops froze over agian and Mom needs some more food, the speacial stuff she eats when she is pregnant. Raven is building a playhouse outside for Smoke, Teal and Orchid, I'm helping her. I wish I knew what Eve was up too, I really miss her. Butterfly ------- Part 2- "Slip of the tongue, slip of the Heart." Marc Cole had been practicing pike for a full three hours when his mother started to really worry about him. Marc was never overly aggresive, it was usually Lucill who did that. So Susan Ivonava Cole, former Vice-President of the Interstellar Alliance, decided that she was going to wring it out of her son. "Marc, dear, what's wrong with you?" Susan asked of her twenty three yearold son, still battering the pike dummy. "Nothing Mom," he replied in between the punches. "Marc..." Susan implied. "Okay, Mom. I'm sorry." Marc said, finally setting down the pike to sit beside his mother. "Well?" Susan asked. "Well, I met this girl and she is really amazing, but I, I'm afriad the last thing on her mind is a relationship." Marc told his mother. "That is your father's department, really Marc. It isn't Sylvia Holt-Stargate, is it?"Susan asked, nervous. As much as she liked Sylvia's father, Wes and his sister Aleia, who was married to Lennier, Susan couldn't stand Sylvia. The girl was fickle, corcing the most resiliant Rangers and officers into bed as a hobby. The twenty year-old girl had had her first affair at sixteen and hadn't stoped since. The result had been 6 children out of wedlock, and this to Susan was not a good thing. She had even corced her adopted cousin's son into bed, poor 17 year-old Luc Holt-Stargate. He had wanted to claim the resulting child, but nobody knew if it was his or not, and Sylvia wouldn't do the test. "No Mother, it isn't Sylvia." Marc answered Susan's freverent prayers. "Good, Marc. Never date that girl, I mean, you don't know where she's been!" Susan exclaimed. Marc laughed lightly and promised he wouldn't. "Who is it then?" Susan pressed, "Is it Fay?" This time, Susan actually hoped that Marc said yes. Susan genuinely liked Dr. Frabklin's daughter. "No, Mom, it isn't Fay." Marc told her, unwitting of his mother's mental match making, "It isn't anybody you know, yet." he continued. "Who then?" Susan asked, curious. "Her name is Eve Failings. I met her the other day, and I got her a job as Uncle John's assistant. She is a telepath." Marc said this last part reluctantly, only because he though his mother might scan him. His mother was a P5 and he was very low, only a P3, where Lucill was a P6. "Oh." was his mother's only reply, wondering if her son might have inherited his father's 'unrequited love sindrom. Marcus Cole had barely managed to convince Susan Ivonava to even consider a relationship with him, and it had taken a five year-old telepath to get them to expose their feelings. Susan gave her son a quick hug and gave him the one piece of advice she knew would never back-fire: "Wait a while, Marc, test the waters slowly, and never jump in head first." --------- "And here are the reports from the out edges of Hyaco space, they say they've had some odd transmitions over there, but nothing major, still, they want you to send a team of rangers to investigate." Eve Failings told John Sheridan, President of the Interstellar Alliance. He looked at his assistant as she organized the many papers on his desk into little piles. She handed him one of them and the others she began to file. He shook his head. Ms. Failings had unrelenting enthusiasm and efficency for this job, and she did it very well. He glanced at the two photos on her desk. One was of a pretty teenager with short blonde hair, cut in a bob, who was holding a little baby with black peach fuz hair in her arms and a little dark haired boy on her knee. The other was off three young girls, a blonde with long braids, a burnet with curly locks and a young girl with straight hair smiling along with the Eve in the picture. John couldn't help but inquire about them. "Who are these?" he asked his assistant. "Oh, my sisters and brother." Eve answered lightly, with a twinge of fear in her voice. She pointed to the first picture."Thats my sister Butterfly, she is six years younger than I am, and the boy is my brother Obsidion and the baby is my little sister Rassberry. The others are my sisters, Crystal, Raven, Brooke and myself." Her tone was deliberatly casual. "You have a big family?" John asked. "Yes, ten sisters and three brothers." Eve told him, wishing she didn't have to, but if she held back then he would suspect. And Eve had to remain inconspicious. ------- Later that day, Michael Garibaldi, head of Covert Opperations and Eve went to the shuttle dock to pick up some important crates for the President. As they left the porting area, Eve noticed the famililar form of her father, Zak Allan and had to resist the urge to run over. But Zak spoted her and Garibaldi, and walked over. Eve knew that Zak had seen Garibaldi a few times over the years when he went for supplies to Minbar, so it wouldn't raise to many red flags. "Hey, Cheif." Zak called out to him, out of old habit. "Hey, Zak, haven't seen you in a while." Garibaldi said. "Yeah, well.." Zak trailed off as he saw his eldest daughter. "Hey, Eve." he said as Eve cringed, thinking that this was going to raise on heck of a lot of flags. Of the red variaty with Mr. Garibaldi. "Hey, Allan." Eve smiled mischieviosly. Zak smiled back. He talked with Garibaldi a while before Zak pulled Eve off to the side to talk. "Hey,Papa." Eve hugged her father, unknowing that Mr. Garibaldi was watching. "Hey, Evy." Zak said. "So, hows everybody?" Eve asked, eager for details of home. "Butterfly and Raven really miss you. Star is gabbing up a storm and Rassberry grew a new tooth. Teal and Orchid are fine and Zach and Smoke feel in the creek and caught the flue. And your mother is pregnant agian." Zak finnished off. "Really?" Eve asked excited. "Do you need me to help?" She knew that sometimes her mother had brithing difficulties, and had delievered her siblings down from Zach to Rassberry. "Na, we'll be fine, Crystal and Raven can help." Zak assured his daughter. "I'd love to chat, but I have too..." Eve trailed off. "I understand, Evy." Zak told his daughter. "Bye, Papa." Eve said as she walked away. "Bye, Evy" Zak told his departing child. As Eve returned to Garibaldi, he fixed her with a questioning gaze. "Evy?" he asked suspiciosly. "Ha." Eve said back at him, not in the mood for his suspicions. "Okay." Garibaldi stopped and leaned on the wall, "You had better start talk'n. How do you know a man who hasn't been to civilization in 2 years and spends most of his time in hidding?" "Can we discuss this in private?" Eve asked. "Yeah, with the President." Michael said threateningly. Eve went gracefully to defeat, knowing her cover was blown. John Sheridan looked at Eve Failings for an explanation, after Garibaldi the snitch reported the event to him. "Well?" he asked his assitant. "Alright. First off, I guess I should tell you that my name isn't Eve Failings. It is Eve Alexander Allan." Eve told the assemblege as John's jaw dropped. "You mean, Zak and Lyta's daughter?" he asked, amazed. "Yeah, I'm here to see what they left behind. Its kinda off a legend at home. I have 10 sisters and 3 brothers, and Mom is pregnant agian. Probably gonna be the last time." Eve told them dutifuly. "You mean to tell me, that Zak and Lyta had 13 children?" Garibald questioned. "Soon to be 14." Eve told him. "Okay, 14." "Yes, there's me, then Crystal, Raven, Brooke, Butterfly, Teal, Orchid, Smoke, Zach, Tiger, Obsidion, Star, and Rassberry." Eve rattled off.
