"Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan." "Julie has been telling me that you have learned much about our Fjon hosts." 'Yes sir. The locals have been most cooperative and helpful. Unfortunately I haven't learned enough of their language. I am going to depend heavily on a good translator." "I am sure Julie will be adequate." "She does seem to have a good grasp of the language." "She cheats," interjected Delenn." "Ma'am?" queried Harold." "She uses her telepathic abilities to surface scan the meanings from whomever she is conversing with." "I thought the telepaths here weren't supposed to scan the local population?" "We aren't, but how do you stop her?" "I resent being talked about in the third person," injected Julie. "So sue me," replied John. "I don't do any harm and it helps prevent me from making gaffes." "Okay, back to our original conversation. What are your opinions about using the locals in the research you are supposed to conduct?" Harold replied, "I think they will be just fine. Since they are, like me, non-telepaths, they won't have any effect on our results. Using telepaths in the labs might skew the results. Besides they are very well educated and their craftsmen are first rate. The manufacturing facilities that we have visited have been most impressive." "Uncle John, when will we be able to begin our work?" "Delenn?" "We have had some unexpected delay getting the asteroid into its final orbit. It's going to be another month and Lyta said to make sure it is stabilized before letting you set up your labs. She also asked about the two of you." "What did you tell her?" asked Julie. "The truth." "What truth?" "That you and Harold were housekeeping." "You didn't have to tell her about that." "Actually she already knew that you and Harold were having a relationship. I am curious how she learned that." "The mental link between you and Uncle John, magnify that several thousand times. When we made love the first time, mom probably knew. That is why she was so worried when I was in the coma. Only death should have been able to interrupt her link with me" Delenn and John just looked at her with wide eyes. "Mom believes that is how the Vorlons stayed in contact with one another. Individuals who shared a common link." "It's also how I seem to be able to do a great many things without any instruction. My subconscious uses the link to access mom's knowledge and abilities." "So you are a combination of yourself and Lyta?" queried Delenn. Julie nodded in the affirmative. "It is like having two powerful telepaths in one body," replied Julie. "I think that might be why I was able to keep the station from being blown up." "I am doing a tour for some of the locals on the asteroid today. Why don't the two of you come with me?" asked John. Both of them agreed it would be a useful endeavor. "What time do we leave Uncle John?" "The shuttle leaves at 1000 hours, meet me before that in my office." They finished breakfast and John took his leave. Delenn looked at Julie and asked, "how are things progressing between you two?" "Pardon Mrs. Sheridan?" asked Harold. "You and Julie have been together for some time now and there are no human birth control devices available." "If you mean am I pregnant yet. I don't know," replied Julie. "You're almost as bad as mom." "That puts me in good company," replied Delenn with a warm smile. "I am still here, ladies," said Harold. "We know Harold," replied Julie. Shaking his head and muttering to himself in a very low voice, Harold headed to the apartment to get ready for the asteroid tour. ****************************************************** The flight to the asteroid was uneventful. The shuttle had rendezvoused with the Whitestar Alpha and the trip had taken less that an hour. A short jump to hyperspace had reduced the planet to asteroid part of it to less than five minutes. On the asteroid the group rode an internal railway to the main portion of the base deep inside the asteroid. It was Harold's and Julie's first trip this deep within the base. In some places it reminded them of how Babylon 5 was constructed. There were several open spaces where the overhead was half a kilometer high. This overhead was in fact the floor of another section. The asteroid would be one large honeycombed rock when the base was finally finished. Lyta and her associates had big plans for this base and the planet below. "Uncle John, the labs look great. All they need now is our equipment." "Mr. Sheridan, if there weren't labels on the walls and doors you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between these rooms and the ones on Epsilon III." "Once they get your equipment installed, it won't look so generic. That is some sophisticated looking equipment Harold." "I will discuss it at length later Mr. Sheridan." "Couldn't you call me John, Uncle John or something else besides Mr. Sheridan?" "No sir. It wouldn't be proper etiquette ." "Uncle John, maybe after we tie the knot, he will come around," said Julie. John walked to the front of the tour group and resumed his place as tour guide. "Tie the knot?" queried Harold. "Just a thought Harold," said Julie with a smirk on her face. "Are you pregnant?" asked Harold . "Why do you ask?" "If you are I have a right to know. You missed your last cycle." "How do you know?" "We have been sleeping together for two months. I know when your last one was and you are late." "Okay, but that isn't abnormal." "I accept that. Are you pregnant?" "I don't know. Aunt D' wants me to see the doctor when I get back," said Julie. They had to pick up their pace to catch the rest of the tour group. The tour showed several square miles of living areas, gardens, industrial areas and such, or at least the areas where they would eventually be located. The power generator plants capable of providing for several major cities and self-defense systems of staggering proportions were dispersed throughout different sections of the asteroid. The intent was to prevent a major malfunction from ruining the whole installation. In time they would also provide energy for the propulsion and stabilization systems. Like any large project it would be opened up a portion at a time as needed. The tour took most of two days just to hit the major points. The Fjon leaders were impressed and had myriad questions. John answered what he could and made arrangements for other knowledgeable personnel to answer the remainder. After the tour was over, Julie took John aside and asked, Julie nodded and said to Harold, Harold received the thought with no outward change of expression. Julie had been working to get him accustomed to communicating with her using thought only. He couldn't send a thought per se, but he could hear a thought directed to him by a high level telepath and Julie, if nothing else, was definitely high level. Julie linked with the whitestar and did a thorough scan of the asteroid's surface during the shuttle ride back to the whitestar. What she learned would be fuel for discussion with Delenn and John when she got back to Fjon. The return trip to Fjon was as uneventful as the trip out to the station, the only difference was the buzz of the officials talking amongst themselves. ****************************************************** At supper John was asking Delenn why she looked tired. She detailed her day of negotiating new trade agreements with the Fjonians. ****************************************************** Harold and Julie had just sat down to dinner with John and Delenn when Delenn told them about an idea for a camping trip. "A camping trip, Aunt D'? I have never been camping before," said Julie enthusiastically." "Neither have I," added Harold, "and it's for the entire weekend?" "Yes," answered Delenn. "I supposed we should read up on camping?" asked Harold. "You can if you wish, but it is not really necessary," responded Delenn. "That mean's we definitely read," said Julie, "or I could just scan Uncle John and project the results into Harold's mind." "Definitely read," responded Delenn. "The last time we did this was when Michael was here with Alfreda," said John. "That was ages ago, Uncle John," responded Julie. "You wanted to talk about the defensive installations?" asked John, changing the subject. "Uncle John there are enough weapons hidden on the asteroid to destroy a fleet of ships and do serious damage to the surface of a planet." "So?" "I just wondered why there were so many? After all, we aren't planning on attacking anyone are we?" "All the systems are for defense only. You haven't seen what a group of ships can do with heavy weapons. Our intention is that anyone who makes the mistake of attacking the base won't get a chance to repeat it. The asteroid is going to be the main line of defense for the facility we are building on the planet." "Just what is the facility going to be?" "Ask your mother." Julie was taken aback by that response, but decided she would do just that at the first opportunity. Delenn asked, "did you see the doctor yet?" "Yes." "And?" "I am pregnant." John congratulated the two of them and Delenn offered her best wishes. Harold didn't say anything. "Harold, exactly what is the research in telekinetics that you and Julie are going to be doing?' asked Delenn. Harold gave them an extensive briefing about the nature of their research. He detailed how they were going to try to explain and duplicate Julie's teek abilities using an organic intelligence unit. He explained that they were hoping to be able to design a new defense system based on this technology. Delenn and John were very much surprised. Whatever they had imagined this wasn't it. MTC
