But I would love your opinion. BABYLON 5: The Odyssey Episode 1: Curses & Shadows Written By Frank Kim Starring Cast: Rupert Everett as Captain Ian Black, CO Don Franklin as Lieutenant Terry Tyrell, XO Carlos Gomez as Lieutenant JG José Santiago, Mission Specialist Nicole deBoer as Lieutenant JG Ana Leavan, Navigation Officer Will Patton as Chief Petty Officer William Daniels, Technical Officer George Clooney as Lieutenant Henry Gordon, Saratoga Squadran David Hewlett as Doctor Carey Miller, Medical Officer Angelina Jolie as Psi Cop, Delia Morse and Alan Scarfe as Minbari Captain Guest Appearances by John Voight as General Roger Morse Edward James Olmos as President Louis Santiago Brent Spiner as Captain Nevin West Michael O'Hare as Commander Jeffery SinClair Phil Morris as ISN Reporter Hudson Lieck as Denise Carson, IPX EAS Odyssey, Omega Class Destroyer EAS MacArthur, Hyperion Class Friggit Ochan, Minbari Warship Babylon 5, Earth Alliance administrated base in Neutral territory. Date: September 25, 2258 2336 Hours ECT (Earth Central Time) Scene: Sector 9, Proxima Centauri System West sweated looking around for it. The temperature was exceptionally warm due to the malfunctioning life support systems. Since Earth Force would not spring the funds to replace the whole damn system, the crew would have to sweat it out for the next few days before returning to Earth. The microgravity along with his empty stomach made him hunger more for the standard rations that was floating around some place. The messy quarters was due to the recent raiders attack. The MacArthur had engaged them in sector 27 near Babylon 5 and had almost destroyed them had they not escaped with their jump capable ship. According to a report that came to his desk a few days ago, the raiders were finally cornered and destroyed at Babylon 5, but their main vessel escaped. General Morse had issued orders to locate and engage that vessel should it appear in normal space again, since a very rare Centauri Emblem was stolen. West was determined to find them and had tracked them all the way from Babylon 5 when a new order came in. A Black Omega Starfury had disappeared near Vorlon Space. Normally, the Earth Alliance would never dream of trying to find a ship lost near Vorlon territory, but this was a special case. The Psi Cop that disappeared was Delia Morse, General Morse's daughter. And Morse said there will be a promotion waiting for West if his SAR mission was a success. Equally the punishment would be just as big if he failed. But no fear of punishment would make West stupid enough to actually take the MacArthur into Vorlon Space. West turned his head to the upper corner of his quarters and there floated a small aluminum airtight package. He reached and grabbed it in triumph. He was going to enjoy the tasteless nutritional ration. As he was about to unwrap it, as he settled himself on the cot, suddenly the alarm klaxons rang. Scene: Bridge, EAS MacArthur Nevin West floated his way onto the bridge to find a general panic coursing through the crew. They were all strapped in for battlestations with the XO barking orders. West made his way to the command chair and strapped himself in."Report!" he barked. The XO turned around from her console to face the captain. She had a frightened look on her face. "Captain, an alien…something is approaching us at a very high speed! I don't recognize the design, but its manuvers in hyperspace are impossible." "On my screen!" order West. The small moniter to his right showed a silhouette of what looked kind of like a spider. Just twice as ugly. "Bring weapons to bear, ready counter measures!" "Sir, they are not in my scope!" shouted the XO. "Our targeting scanners can't locate them!" West turned sharply to the moniter. The silhouette was getting larger. They were getting closer. "Prepare to make the jump to normal space! Full power to the thrusters! Maybe we can out run it." As he gave the order he was pushed back into his seat when the MacArthur's powerful engines made this ship move faster. Unfortunately, not fast enough. West watched with horror as the massive alien ship fired some sort of particle weapon and scored a hit on the MacArthur. The impact was outstanding. The entire ship seemed to lose momentum. "Fire all weapons!" shouted West. But no one seemed to hear. He looked at the moniter and it showed the alien ship right on top of them. He started to hear a type of scream. One that he will remember for the rest of his life. The next few seconds of it left, that is. The alien ship fired another blast at the MacArthur and it broke apart. The crew didn't even get a chance to fire a shot. Date October 2, 2258 1700 Scene: Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois, North American Continent Earth It was tough. He didn't think that it would be this hard, but in the crisp cool autumn Chicago air and the tall buildings that built a wall to the sun to the west, and Lake Michigan to the right, he still sweated. He looked around for companionship from his colleagues and found that they were all gone. It was up to him. He sprinted forward, running as fast as he could. Victory was in his sites. But defeat was right behind him. He ran and ran and…tripped! He fell to the ground with one big thump. He stood up to find that he was only mere inches away from victory when someone slammed right into him. He dropped the football. Ian Black turned around and looked up as the other player extended a hand. Black took it gratefully and he was pulled up. "I'm getting too old for this," he muttered in his soft, British accent. He dusted himself off with the back of his hand as his other team mates huddled together. He was about to join them when he heard someone shout his name. "Ian Black!" Black turned to see an Earth Force officer standing by an armored skimmer. Black walked toward that officer and the officer looked at him blankly. "I'm Ian Black," Black said tiredly. "What can I do you for?" "General Morse has requested an audience with you, sir." said the green officer. Black nodded. He looked back at his teammates then said, "Mind if I stop off at home for a change?" "Change what, sir?" asked the officer. How did this guy ever make it in Earth Force? "My clothes you imbecile." said Black annoyed. "I will not see General Morse in this outfit." Black indicated his dirty football uniform. "Oh! Yes sir." Date: October 3, 2258 0030 Scene: General Morse's office, Geneva Black, now in a fresh uniform, sat intently in front of Morse's desk. Morse, a weasely looking man, leaned forward and handed Black a folder. Black opened it up and took at it. It read: "MSSH RECORD; TIME 2144 ECT; SCANNER IMAGE SHOWED DISTINCT IMAGE OF MINBARI WARSHIP APPROACHING EARTH CONTROLLED SPACE; POSSIBLE RENEGADE MINBARI WARSHIP THAT WAS RUMORED TO REFUSE TO SURRENDER AT BATTLE OF THE LINE; BABYLON 5 ALERTED". The MSSH was a survellience satallite in hyperspace that specifically looked toward Minbari territory for any possible intrusions into Earth Space. When the Minbari surrendered at the battle of the line, one ship refused to surrender and went off on its own. Black knew this. Black closed the folder and looked up at General Morse. "You want me to go after it?" General Morse had a serious look on his face. "That record was relayed to us from Babylon 5. It wasn't supposed to have been relayed to us from Babylon 5, it was supposed to have been relayed to us from the MacArthur. We haven't heard anything from the MacArthur in the past 7 days. Intelligence believes that the MacArthur may have engaged and was destroyed by that Minbari ship. But we aren't certain. That's why we are sending you. I want you to assume the MacArthur's mission and also try and find the MacArthur if they are still alive." "What was the MacArthur's mission, General?" Black asked. He looked at Black seriously. "Find my daughter." To Be Continued... From: Mega-Defiant@webtv.net (Captain S. "Your daughter?" Morse nodded. "She's a Psi Cop. She was chasing a renegade telepath by the name of Lyta Alexander and had traced her from Mars all the way towards Vorlon Territory. Somewhere between there and Mars is where she vanished. Now, Captain West confirmed that her ship didn't disappear in Earth Controlled space. But that still left about twelve unexplored sectors. And the MacArthur should have checked just about all of them by the time they lost contact." "Could it have been the Vorlons?" asked Black. "Possibly, but we don't know that either. I have had Commander SinClair of Babylon 5 request a meeting with the Vorlon Ambassador, a chump named Kosh. But the Commander warned me that the Vorlon wasn't always forthcoming." Morse sighed. He stood and walked over to the window facing the capitol. "Listen to me, Captain. Delia is the most important thing to me right now. I never wanted her to become a Psi Cop, but she was a P12. She had no choice. I know I should have followed her life more carefully… But it's too late for that. She's been lost of over a week. She's probably dead right now." A single tear fell out of his eye. Black was unimpressed at Morse's display of emotion. Morse turned around. "Find her, captain. I would go out there myself if I had a choice. But Vice President Clark wouldn't allow it. He needs me here right now. I am giving you the freedom to take whatever steps are necessary to find out what happened. Who did it. And to eliminate who is responsible." "Judge, jury, and executioner?" said Black. He grinned. "I like it. When do I leave?" Obviously the General wouldn't allow him to finish his shore leave. "Right now." Date: October 3, 2258 0627 Scene: Babylon 5, Zokolow Denise Carson took a seat at the casino and watched a drunken Centauri in regal clothes lose over and over again at the craps table. She smiled and shook her head and looked toward the nearest moniter. ISN was on. "And in recent news President Louis Santiago is on Earth Force One coming home after his trip to Babylon 5. First he will be stopping at Mars and then Io, in a…" Stepping in front of her was a postal officer. He looked at her emotionlessly and asked, "Are you Denise Carson?" Carson nodded. The postal officer handed her a letter. She smiled. "I didn't know you guys delivered." "I'm not really a postal worker." he said, then walked away. She opened the envelope. In it was a piece of IPX stationary with one word in the body: Odyssey. "Odyssey?" she said to herself, confused. "What odyssey?" Date: October 3, 2258 0900 Scene: EAS Odyssey, MS Quarters José Santiago stuffed his duffle bag inside the small closet and grabbed the mission brief sitting on the top of his desk. The small gray room lacked in imagination. It also only had a vibe shower. No real ones on an Earth Force Destroyer. But that's what he wanted. A career. As he read the mission brief, he accessed the computer for information on Minbari ships and technology, as well as the MacArthur's design schematics and personnel, specifically Captain Nevin West. If he were to be a mission specialist, he must be knowledgeable in all areas of the mission. The computer chimed. "Incoming transmission," said the emotionless female computer voice. Santiago set the brief down and sat in front of the moniter. "Go," Santiago said simply. On the moniter came the face of President Louis Santiago. José smiled. "Hi dad," he said. Louis smiled back. "Hi son. How's life in Earth Force?" "It's a breeze, dad. I'm just settling in on the Odyssey." "Very good, José. What do you think of your ship?" "A real treasure, dad. One of the most advanced ships in the fleet. It even has the updated EPS tracking system. The crew has welcomed me with open arms. I think I'll be fine here." "Good son, good. But don't get too comfortable. I have another assignment for you after your talents are completed on the Odyssey. I'll be sending you to Babylon 5 as a Mission Specialist. It will be a much more difficult assignment there, but it's purpose is an honorable one. I know you can handle it." The President smiled. "I wish my prayers onto you and remember to call your mother." José nodded. "I won't forget, dad." Louise nodded. "I'll see you soon." And the transmission abruptly ended. Santiago shook his head. Date October 3, 2258 0900 Scene: EAS Odyssey, Bridge Ana Leavan access the navigational tracking reports and found that the hyperspace beacons were a little sporatic in the area of space they were supposed to go. She turned to Lieutenant Tyrell at the command chair. "Sir, I have some small concerns about the position that the MacArthur was searching." Tyrell nodded. "Voice them, Lieutenant." She smiled. "Well, sir, the route that the MacArthur took in their flight plan had taken them well away from the beacon at jump point 127. They may have gotten lost in hyperspace. If we take that route, we run a high risk in getting lost ourselves." "Okay," said Tyrell. "I'll voice your concerns to the Captain." "Thank you sir." said Leavan. Just then Black walked onto the bridge. Tyrell stood at attention. "At ease, Lieutenant. Are we ready to leave orbit?" Black asked. "Yes sir. All stations are ready for departure. The remaining shore leave crews had arrived a few minutes ago." "Very good." Black took his seat in the center chair. "Take us out of orbit and ready the jump engines." "Aye sir," said Tyrell. "Take us out of orbit! Ready to jump into hyperspace!" The grand ship's engines fired and the ship was on the way. Black took pride in the efficiency and speed. "We're ready to jump into hyperspace, Captain," said Tyrell. Black nodded. "Jump!" The erratic yellow vortex into the realm of hyperspace opened up and the Odyssey went through it. They were supposed to be some of the elite starfury pilots that were trained right along with Zeta Squadran. And combat veteran, Battle of the Line survivor, Henry Gordon did not impress Captain Black at all. Black gave Gordon an exasperated look. Gordon, equally annoyed, stood his ground. "…It is not that my people aren't looking hard enough for your missing Black Omega, it's that they have been looking for that ship, and the MacArthur, for 29 hours straight. They need rest, captain. We are all tired." Black grinded his teeth. "Now you listen to me, I don't want to hear excuses on how and why you aren't doing your job. I gave you an assignment to complete and you will complete it, even if it kills your pilots. I don't care. You are a squad leader, Lieutenant, you are supposed to know how to delegate your pilots assignments. If you can't do your job, now is the time to tell me. I will not tolerate, for an instant, any inefficiencies on this ship." "How can I do my job on this hectic schedule?" complained Gordon. "That bitch is probably dead by now, starfuries don't retain that much oxygen for the length of time that she has been missing, which is," he held three fingers in front of Black's face, "three weeks! Her ship had probably drifted so far off the beacon, even if she was lost in hyperspace, that it would be sheer idiocy to try and follow the hyperspace currents! We risk getting lost in hyperspace ourselves!" "Henry," said Black softly. "How stupid do you think I am, and be honest." Gordon remained silent. Black smiled. "I would not take the Odyssey so far off the beacon that we risk losing the signal. I am not suicidal. Now, start delegating your squad and do try and extend the search radius. Then we'll have to make the jump to normal space and start searching there. We only have eleven more sectors to go." Gordon rolled his eyes. Scene: aft section; EAS Odyssey Daniels smiled that cynical but tired smile of his at Leavan and said, "Lieutenant, I haven't slept for three days. I've been too busy trying to prevent a complete breakdown of the jump engines because the great Captain Black won't give them a rest. Most of my team has been running ragged, hardly even had time to eat, if I am making any sense," Daniels yawned. "I'm tired and I am hungry. These course plots will put unnecessary strain on the engines and give us all too much extra work, but I think we can pull it off, but only for you sweet cheeks." Leavan turned red. "You know what, I'll plot a new course, give you and the engines less strain. The captain won't even know." Daniels smiled gratefully. "Thanks," he said sincerely. He was going to enjoy the extra day or so of sleep. Leavan smiled back. "No problem." Date October 9, 2258 0950 Scene: Bridge; EAS Odyssey "This course will add an extra day to our journey," said Black. "It won't work." He handed Leavan a printout of new course plots. "Use this course, it's more efficient." Leavan nodded. "Yes sir." she said, then looked at the plots. It was the originals that she submitted to poor Daniels. Well, she thought. I tried. Leavan plotted the course into the Nav Computer. Then she stood and walked over to Tyrell's station. He was actively working with two scanner techs looking for the missing starfury. And the MacArthur. "Um, sir," she said hesitantly to Tyrell. Tyrell turned around sharply then softened when he saw who was tapping his shoulder. "What is it, Lieutenant?" he asked. Although he could already guess. Damn captains. "Sir, the technical crew have been working night and day keeping the engines running. Now, I have plotted a course that should give them time to rest, but-" "I am well aware of the situation," Tyrell interupted. "Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about it. I've already explained to the captain what kind of toll this SAR has taken on the crew." He lowered his voice to a hushed whisper. "I don't think he cares." "Why not?" complained Leavan. "We have never had any problems with him before. What's his problem?" She took a step closer to Tyrell, as if to ensure privacy. "This mission is to find a Psi Cop named Delia Morse," whispered Tyrell. "General Morse's daughter. The General personally chose Black for this mission. Captain West of the MacArthur was his first choice, but that ship vanished. Black is the second." "I see," said Leavan, knowing the General's reputation for getting what he wanted or else. "What do we do?" Tyrell sighed. "We have to hang in there. Once the Black Omega is found and Delia's body recovered-" "You think she's dead?" asked Leavan. "It's been three weeks," said Tyrell. "Her starfury would have run out of air in only a day." Date October 9, 2258 1500 Scene: Babylon 5; Commander SinClair's office Carson smiled at the suspicious looking Commander. She did not expect anything else, due to the station's history. He looked at her as if she was pure poison from the snake that was called Earth Gov. But she didn't work for Earth Force, only IPX. "I was wondering if you have a ship called the Odyssey traveling dangerously close to Vorlon space?" she asked. SinClair did not respond. He just sat there, looking at her. She turned around to find nothing behind her then turned back and smiled. "What IPX can offer is some detail star maps that we got from…a source and in return I get to travel with the Odyssey." She sat back proudly. "Interplanetary Expeditions has worked successfully with Earth Force in the past. I'm sure this arrangement can work." "How did you get star maps of Vorlon space?" asked Sinclair "We didn't get star maps of Vorlon space," Carson corrected. "We have star maps of the surrounding sectors. The Vorlons, though a quiet people, have proven themselves to be very dangerous." "But you are willing to risk your life to go there." said Sinclair. "Why?" "It's called EXPLORING," said Carson smartly. "IPX is expanding." "I see," said Sinclair, unconvinced. She did not care if he didn't believe him. It didn't matter. "Why come to me, why not go directly through Earth Gov?" More why's, Carson thought tiredly. "Because standard beauracracy takes about months and this is kinda last minute sort of thing. I need your help, if you don't mind." "I'll thing about it." Date October 9, 2258 2055 Scene: ? Delia Morse awoke with a start and didn't hear anything. No voices. "You'll be safe. As soon as I know that information, I'll share it with you." "Are you a prisoner?" she asked. "In a way," he said. "You're on a Minbari warship, human." said the voice that seemed to emanate from everywhere. Morse could not exactly pinpoint the exact origin. Or who was saying it. "Why am I here?" she asked curiously. "You would be dead now if it weren't for me. You were straying to close Vorlon space. They don't like uninvited guests." "I was on a mission," Morse complained. "I was searching for a rogue telepath. You haven't by any chance found one, have you?" "Yes, I have." Delia was taken aback. On an warship of an old enemy, she did not expect to find Lyta Alexander. "Oh really? Who?" "You," said the voice calmly. Smart ass, Delia thought as her face fell. Date October 9, 2258 2230 hours Scene: Hyperspace The Thunderbolt Class starfury could not have come sooner. It was like a dream to fly her. The Odyssey was one of the first, if not the very first, in line to get them. Sidewinder mountable, heat sheilding for atmospheric manuvers, landing gear even. Larger engines for faster speeds and even a larger fuel capacity for more lengthlier trips. Already approved by Earth Gov. At least a year from the mass production date, the Odyssey got a taste of the future. Henry Gorden was in one of those now. He was amazed at how well these things handled. Like a Hot Rod, the Thunderbolt stood out. Gordon could not finger it but there was something about these new starfuries that won't let him accept any other fighter. 'Time to name her,' thought Gordon fondly. "Saratoga 5 to Saratoga 1, Flash, you there?" said Jenkins voice over the com. 'Flash' as in Flash Gordon, a sad parody about a lone hero fighting evil with a bunch of winged warriors. Gordon accepted that nickname only in respect for the rest of the squadran, who all also had nicknames. "I'm here, go ahead Space Junkie," said Gordon. Space Junkie was Jenkins nick. "Sir, I'm getting some weird readings in your quadrant. Do you see anything?" "What?" said Gordon, confused. "I'm not getting..." His voice trailed off as a new change in sensor readings occured. Something was happening but he was unsure what. Date October 9, 2258 2232 hours Scene: EAS Odyssey "What's your purpose here?" Black asked Santiago, aggravated. "What's your position?" "I'm the Mission Specialist, Captain," said Santiago evenly. "What does a Mission Specialist do, exactly? What's my mission? To rescue Delia Morse, find the MacArthur and come home. I know the mission. You're useless!" Yelped Black. Before Santiago could respond, Tyrell jumped. "Sir!" he said. "Saratoga 1 has found something. A ship perhaps." "Set a course," Black said immediately. "Maximum burn!" The Odyssey leaped into action as her engines powered up to full burn. The speed was impressive, for a new Omega Class destroyer. Over 20000 Kph. All the starfuries grouped into battle formation as the Odyssey met them halfway to Gordon's fighter. They made their way to Saratoga 1's Quadrant to see something they never expected. A Minbari warship. Scene: Minbari Warship "Something's coming," said the deep Minbari voice. "I can feel it, something evil." All around Delia came the view of hyperspace. The way it surrounded her made her feel that she was actually 'in' hyperspace. But hyperspace was supposed to enhance her telepathic abilities, and she felt more hindered. Coming to view was an object. And as it got closer it turned into quite a few objects with one large one behind them. It was an Earth Force Destroyer. "That's not evil," said Delia reasonably. "That's an Earth Force ship. They're probably here looking for me." "I was not talking about the Earth ship," said the Minbari. "Look behind you." Delia turned around to view something.... alien. It was black, in a semi circle what looked like a bad cross between a hand and a spider. And it screamed. A most horrible scream, like death was before you. "Oh my god," she said in awe. Scene: Saratoga 1 Gordon viewed the alien object in terror. "All fighters, fire at will!" "At what," said Saratoga 2. "The Minbari warship?" "No you jackass, the alien!" Gordon started firing at the alien ship. tbc...
