A Revenge of Passing by Meredith D. Holt beckihblumer@fuse.net Prologue- The Cyclone- 2277 The anger was a torrent, a cyclone whirling in her mind, tearing logic and reserve from her like a tornado rips trees effortlessly from the ground. She could here her mother down stairs, calling out for her sister. The note slipped from her fingers as they numbed like ice. Cole, she was gone, run away. The only person who had ever truly loved Jessica was gone, and now there was no one who understood. Looking up, through teary eyes, Jessica saw the empty silver frame that Cole had left, taking only the picture of her family. Sinking to the floor to weep, she hung her head in shame. "My fault, my fault," she sobbed, "MY fault." Part 1- Lies-2287 My name is Jessica Sarah Garibaldi, PFC J.S. Garibaldi 56824 to my military superiors. I'm going home, and to most people that's no big deal, but I haven't spoken, or seen either of my parents in ten years. But home isn't home any more, it is just where I grew up, because no place is home unless Cole is there. Cole is my half sister, but I love her like she is my true blood, we were inseparable when we were little. But then the lies came, the darkness that happened before we were born, and the truth that every single one of my relatives and surrogate family hid from us. Cole and I are the same age, give or take a month or so, but that's kind of hard to do if we aren't twins. We were lied to our whole lives, or at least until we turned sixteen..... 2270- Jessica and Cole lay next to each other on the hill of blue feathery grass underneath the Minbari stars. Holding hands they closed their eyes and used their telepathic powers to talk in their heads. *Jessica?* Cole's honey voice seeped into her sister's senses. *Ummm?* she murmured sleepily. *Do you want to go home now, Mere will be very worried.* Jessica knew that Cole didn't want to leave either this was their favorite spot on all of Minbar. *You don't want to leave either, do you?* she asked in her own mind voice, that sounded like molasses seeping through silk. *No.* They lay there a while longer, until they opened their eyes to the sight of a beautiful shooting star. Silently, they sat up and watch it streak itself across the dusty purple sky. As it disappeared over the horizon, Jessica's brown eyes fastened on her sister's. *What did you wish for?* she asked. Cole brushed a lock of brown hair behind her bone crest before she answered. *A Miracle* They got up and raced each other back to the house Jessica's blonde locks still peppered with grass blades. The lights where on in the crystalline mansion that their mother and Cole's father lived in with Cole, and her older sister Sofie, and her younger siblings Estara, Yundle and Hannha. Sometimes Jessica lived there, and sometimes she didn't, because she alternated houses with her father, Michael Garibaldi. As they ran in the back door and wiped their feet, they heard voices. A rich deep one that Jessica recognized as belonging to her father. Her eyes twinkled as she ran into the living room. She had forgotten tonight was the night she went to stay with Papi for the week end. Cole followed a moment later. "Papi!" Jessica cried as she through herself into the arms of her father. "Jessi!" Michael said as he squeezed her in a big bear hug. Cole came over and hugged her mother. "Mere, where is Pere?" Cole asked after her father. She failed to notice the look Aleia and Michael exchanged over the children's heads. "He's still at the Embassy with Aunt Delenn and Uncle John. Its late, baby, why don't you go upstairs and get in bed. Estara, Yundle and Hannha, even Sofie are all asleep." Aleia admonished lightly. Cole nodded and gave her Mom a kiss. Then she and Jessica gave each other a big hug and exchanged rings, as they always did when Jessica left. As Cole ran up the steps, she turned as Jessica spoke; "Bye, Cole D. Marie Holt-Stargate!" Jessica giggled and Cole giggled back. "Bye Jessica Sarah Garibaldi!" 2287- Cole and I used to think it was funny that our last names were different. Maybe our parents found comfort in that, as if it made the fact that they lied to us any better. It took us sixteen years of living to find out that our lives were entwined in the worst possible way... 2277- Jessica was so happy to be back home, boarding school sucked! She had read all of Cole's letter five times over so she made sure she knew all that had happened in the past 3 months and would be up to date. She took the shuttle dock right to Mere's house, glad she was going to see her sister again. Excitement bubbled up as she thought about how Cole had talked about their mutual childhood friend, Marc, in her letters. Jess knew that Cole had feelings for him, and couldn't wait to stay up late and talk about it. She rushed in the door, and yelled out at the top of her lungs; "BOARDING SCHOOL SUCKS, I'M BA-ACK!" It echoed of the crystal fixtures as she saw a blur of red silk run down the steps. In an instant she and Cole where laughing and hugging. "I'm am SO glad you are back, Jess!" Cole said as her eyes shone, "Look what Marc gave me!" she held her left hand out and Jessica saw a huge amethyst engagement ring was around her finger. "Is that what I think it is!?" Jessica burst out. Cole merely nodded. "I want you to be my bride's maid." "Well, I'd be insulted if you didn't." Jess joked. The sisters smiled, glad to be back together again. "Are you sure its in here?" Jess asked as she and Cole tip toed into the room Mere and Cole's father shared. Cole nodded as they proceeded to look for the dress pattern. They both wanted to go over the ideas for the wedding, but Cole had remembered that she had left them in her mother's room when they had been talking earlier. Jessica looked around as Cole proceeded to look for the sketch pad. "Is this it?" she asked as she picked it up from Aleia's desk. "Oh, yeah! I'm an idiot." Cole laughed as she took it. As she did, she upset a small purple bound book and it fell to the floor, opening to a page. "Opps." Jessica said as she picked it up. She noticed the page was dated and realized it was their mother's diary. "Wow, look at this, its dated 2259." "Ohh, let me see!" the other sixteen year old said. One day, she would wish they had just set the book back on the desk and left it alone. The two sat down on the bed and flipped to the first page. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ December 25th, 2259 Dear Mother, Michael gave this to me for Christmas, it was a very nice thought. Lennier gave me a silk robe, its blue, to match my eyes. I am really glad that Michael and I can still be friends. I mean, I didn't mean to break his heart, or lead him on. I will write more tomorrow, but I have to get Sofie and Anakin in bed. Love, Aleia They skipped a few pages, to a day in early 2260; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ February 12th, 2260 Dear Mother, Elly just told us that she is pregnant, with Twins! Stephen practically glows with happiness. I really wish Lennier and I could have a baby. Janice also informed us that the Ultra Sound she had done revealed that her baby was a boy. Wes is very happy, he wants to name it Travis. Love, Aleia ---------------------------------------- "I bet that is the reference to when they thought they couldn't have a baby." Cole said softly. Jessica knew what she was talking about. They had been told that when Lennier and Aleia married, they tried to have a baby, but it didn't look good, so Michael had donated a sperm to Aleia, one that had created Jessica. But later, she and Lennier had figured out that they could produce offspring, and Michael was given half custody of Jessica. The sisters exchanged looks and flipped a bit further. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 10th, 2260 Dear Mother, Lennier found out about my using Metazine when I passed out the other day. I'm glad he did, I almost died because of an over dose. I'll be more careful next time. Stephen and Elly are looking into a pill to help my visions, friends like these are great. Love, Aleia ----------------------------------- Cole gasped when she read the entry, she had never known about the Metazine. Jessica stood, and seemed to be debating whether or not to put the diary back. But fate has a tendency to really screw life up sometimes, and she sat back down instead and Cole opened to a random page. They stared at it for a second with out really reading it, the page was crinkled from tears, and the ink was smeared a bit. Cole began to read out loud. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ May 22nd 2261, Dear Mother, I haven't written in a while. I just couldn't, not with the way things have been lately, but Susan and Delenn thought it might be a good idea to get it all out, and I think that they may be right. A week ago, Michael, my friend Michael Garibaldi, tried to rape me. I don't think I'll ever be the same Aleia I used to be. I almost died, or so they tell me. And so did the baby, my first baby with Lennier, and I almost had a miscarriage. Lennier is still angry most of the time, especially since Michael broke out of his cell and ran away to Mars, but he hides it most of time. I know now what I am going to name my baby, Cole, because Marcus and Susan have been such pillars of strength for me. Delenn and John as well, all my friends have been supportive, helping me out and such, and just listening. I thank God that he spared my life and my baby girl's. I am alive, and right now, that is all that matters. Love, Aleia ------------------- Cole dropped the book as if it had burned her and the wretched thing fell to the wooden floor. Jessica began to cry softly as Cole turned the palest shade she ever had. They looked at each other with teary eyes, and knew that now, even more then ever they needed each other. "Cole! Jessica! I'm home!" It was their mother. They wiped their eyes and Jessica picked up the tool that had shattered their innocence and placed it back on the desk. Cole sniffled as they walked down the stairs, only to see not only their mother, but Michael as well. At the same time, they sucked in a harsh breath. Instantly, their mother knew that something was wrong, both Cole and Jessica looked on her with new eyes. "Cole, Jessi, what's wrong?" Aleia asked, her blue-gray eyes filled with questions, almost as may as the ones that filled the eyes of her children. "Why didn't you tell us?" Cole whispered. "Tell you what?" Michael asked. "Tell us why we are only half sisters." Jessica said as they both stood before the liars that called themselves their parents. "I told you baby," Aleia said, even as the color drained from her face, "Lennier and I didn't think we could have children...." "No, you lie!" Jessica burst out. "We know, we accidentally knocked your diary off the desk, we read the entry." Cole said softly. "God...." Michael raised his eyes to the heavens and sank into the chair. Aleia's two daughters stood and confronted them. "Well, are you going to tell us why!?" Cole asked hotly, suddenly angry. "Would you have me tell you, Jessica, that you weren't born out of an act of love, but one of spite!? That you weren't conceived in the warmth of a mother's tummy, but in a cold, sterile test tube!? I wanted you to have a happy life, I didn't want our mistakes to haunt you!" Aleia sobbed, wishing for her husband to stand with her in this, but she had to face it alone. "So what, am I something you hate, a constant reminder of that day!" Jessica asked, hot tears streaming down her face as she screamed at her mother. "Oh, no baby," Tears rolled down Aleia's cheeks as well as she spoke it so soft it was hard to hear, "I regret that morning everyday, and will for the rest of my life, but I always that God for you. You are my silver lining, you and Cole." Aleia reached out to hold her children, and Cole hugged her mother, but Jessica turned away. "Jess..." her so-called father spoke. "Go away. Go any where." she said with venom in her voice. Michael touched her shoulder, but she jerked away, and ran out the door. 2287- I came home after that, but I refused to see my father. A few days later, Cole left and ran away. The note she left said that she needed to find herself, and figure out who she was now, and I haven't seen her since. I know that she meant well, and I don't blame her, but I know she broke Marc's heart. I still don't know who I am. I left and joined Earth Force a year later, hoping to die an honorable death. Instead I met Dimitri, and we fell in love. But he is dead now. I walk all the way to the Holt-Stargate Mansion, rather than taking the shuttle dock, I need to re-aquaint myself with the world I never really called home. I spent a lot of time on Earth, in boarding school, and Babylon 5 has to be the only place I have perfect memories of. And perfect happiness, even in memory is hard to find. Finally, I reach my mother's house. The door is open, as usual, so I slip in unnoticed. She is washing dishes in the kitchen, the Minbari sunshine streaming in the window and highlighting her gray-brown hair and slim figure. My mother has always been beautiful, I wish I looked more like her. I'm not wearing my uniform, instead one of the long robes like she used to wear. She finishes the dishes, and I struggled to find my voice. "Mere?" I say softly, and she slowly turns around. "Jessi!" she cries and runs to give me a bug hug, she is still taller then I am. "You've come home." she states. "Yes, Mere, I have." I say softly against her velvet gown, I feel like a little girl again. Now all I need is for Cole to come home, and then we can be a family again.
